Previous Chapter

Simon was about to declare an emergency family meeting the moment they returned to shore, only to find everyone else was already awake.

His worry over Anna’s nightmare turned into alarm when not only did Euphemia reveal that she had shared the same vision, but that Norbelle had teleported all the way from Cocagne to confirm she experienced it too. Every Visionary or prophet in the family had seen the exact same thing: they saw fire raining from the sky and causing the earth to scream beneath the living’s feet.

“Could you see the cause of this disaster?” Maublanc asked Euphemia.

“No,” she replied with a grim tone. The vision had left her shaken. “This is a warning from the Light itself. The Doom come again.”

“But you didn’t see the black comet,” Simon noted. That was the most disturbing part to him, besides the newness of it all. Whatever incoming global disaster they had prophesied was apparently unrelated to the Zodiac Parade; and from the reactions of all their seers, far more urgent. “Could it be the elves? A last resort to defeat us now that we’ve pushed them into a corner—”

“No,” Norbelle cut in, her three eyes staring at him unblinkingly with uncanny seriousness for someone like her. “It’s you, Simon. You will cause this somehow.”

Simon perked up, a chill traveling down his spine. “How do you know this?”

“Because all we see are the ripples in the river, not the rock that starts it all,” Norbelle replied. “That only happens with the Overlord.”

“She’s… right,” Euphemia said, squinting at Simon. “I could see Gargauth’s dragons ravaging the land, but not that brute himself due to his Anathemic Secrecy. We inferred it from other circumstantial evidence.”

Simon frowned as he considered their information. He could only think of one project of his that would involve destruction raining from the sky. “Could it be connected to Operation Meteor?”

“Operation Meteor?” Anna asked with a scowl.

“A secret plan to use some of the Kish Sanctuary’s floating islands as projectiles to bombard Illusea.”

Half of the family who didn’t know about the plan stared at him in horror, with Thalas speaking for them all, “You planned to bombard the Worldtree, and you didn’t tell us about it?”

“It was a secret weapon, Thalas. The fewer the people involved, the less the chances that word got out.”

“This…” Anna looked away, her skin paler than chalk. “What we saw… the Worldtree and the manatrees screaming…”

“But it was only meant to be a limited bombardment, if we used it at all,” Simon protested. “We planned to only use a handful of the smaller islands so as to avoid damaging the Worldtree! Lauriane wasn’t even sure it would even break past Illusea’s defenses.”

“That would have been the case if we limited ourselves to our original selection,” Louis replied without a care in the world. “But we’ve begun weaponizing the larger ones for quite some time now.”

Louis Magnos never raised his voice, to the point the most terrible words a man could utter came across as banalities when coming out of his mouth. It took a moment for the true horror of his sentence to sink into Simon’s heart.

“What?” was the only thing his mind could formulate.

Louis seemed almost puzzled by the question. “You were shot into a coma for a month, brother, and the kish attempted to revolt. What reasons did we have left not to prepare the larger islands?”

Simon’s blood turned to water. “But it’s only been a month. You can’t have possibly prepared something as large as Boreas for bombardment.”

“Lady Lauriane informed us she had secured the dryad’s cooperation on the project before I was taken off it,” Lady Isabelle said. She rubbed her arms and looked anxious. “I… I thought Your Majesty was informed…”

“This is insane…” Thalas muttered in disbelief.

“Simon trusted Uncle Paimon and I to lead the war effort in his absence,” Louis pointed out. “It was within my purview as Marshal to approve the project.”

Euphemia glared at her husband, who avoided her gaze. “You knew,” she said, her tone colder than ice. “You knew about this madness, and you allowed it?”

“It makes tactical sense to bombard Lore and Muse, since we have little hope of holding those territories in the long-term and it would be more effective than airship raids,” Maublanc explained with an accountant’s dispassionate appraisal of human life. “If we destroy those two nations—”

“We will kill millions,” Euphemia snapped angrily while Anna listened in shocked silence.

“—we can end the war, cow tributaries into obedience, and focus our resources to fight the Zodiac Parade,” Maublanc concluded with frightening rationality. “It would be the most optimal way to preserve Endymion’s population, Euphemia. My only real issue with the plan is the very real risk of harming the Worldtree should we target Illusea directly. I calculated that the damage we would inflict may outweigh any expected benefit, and I anticipate Illusea would likely agree to a ceasefire once deprived of its allies.”

Euphemia listened in silence for a moment, while Anna clenched her fists. “Father…”

“There was no plan to actually use this weapon in the short or medium term without you or Your Majesty’s approval, Anna,” Maublanc tried to reassure her. “We simply thought we should keep the option open. Just in case the war turned against us.”

“I see why my previous husband always trusted you to do his dirty work.” Bitterness and disappointment were written all over Euphemia’s face when she finally spoke up. “You cannot find a spine when it matters most.”

Maublanc had the decency to remain silent after that rebuke.

Simon himself struggled to make sense of this madness. There was no way Lady Junon would agree to turn the largest inhabited Sanctuary islands into bombs, but Lauriane had means of ‘pacifying’ her like she did with the Goetia Research Facility’s dryad. His sister was also still part of his Party and thus under Anathemic Secrecy. If she did do something that caused the Sanctuary to fall onto Illusea and accidentally destroy the Worldtree, then seers would only see the results of her action rather than the cause.

Moreover, if every Visionary in Endymion had seen the coming disaster, then so should the Oracle. Alcyone was out there with knowledge of the Sanctuary too. It was only a matter of time until Illusea put two and two together.

For all Simon knew, an elven attack on the Sanctuary would be the exact event kickstarting this disaster. Prophecies had a nasty tendency to become self-fulfilling.

“Fetch our swiftest airship,” Simon ordered. “Thalas, Anna, Norbelle, Lady Barbatos, with me. Maublanc, Euphemia, Louis, you’ll stay here to watch over the empire in our absence in case our foes try anything.”

Louis immediately saw the writing on the wall. “Are we being grounded, brother?”

“Yes, you are,” Simon replied bluntly. He wasn’t foolish enough to bring him in particular to the Sanctuary after all the messes he had caused there. “You better pray that your rash actions didn’t condemn all of Brimir.”

His words amused Louis, though he didn’t contest the order. “Forgive me, Simon, but I’m not the faithful type.”

He wanted this, the bastard. He had always planned to find an opening to go overboard with Operation Meteor, and Simon’s brief coma provided the perfect opportunity to do so. A pity Simon was in no position to punish him for it in the middle of a war, but there would be a reckoning in time.

“I will keep an eye on him,” Euphemia promised Simon before departure. “Do what you must.”

“Have you learned to trust me at last, stepmother?”

“Only the Overlord can challenge the Light’s visions.” Euphemia scowled. “For once, I hope you do.”

—----------

The Asterion-powered Malevolence took off for the Sanctuary at full speed, with an Azulbolla-riding Norbelle hot on its tail.

Finding the floating archipelago was incredibly difficult due to its barrier, but the imperial army had mimicked the Performances used by the kish to send messages through the wind. Learning that its flight path had been diverted above the northern sea was a cause for alarm on its own. That shouldn’t be happening outside of a planned bombardment.

What bothered Simon the most was that none of his messenger imps had contacted him about Lauriane’s changes to the Sanctuary. He knew he had only woken up recently, but one should have at least gotten out of the barrier to report to him.

Something was deeply off.

He wasn’t the only one who could feel it. One could cut the tension on the deck with a knife. Thalas’ axe hadn’t left his hand the whole time, Isabelle Barbatos had been quiet during the entire flight, and Anna stared at the sky with a grim expression.

“It shouldn’t be long, hopefully,” Simon promised Anna. “We’ll put an end to whatever’s happening there.”

Anna nodded, though worry was written all over her face. “Simon, you said this Operation Meteor was meant for dissuasion only?”

“Yes,” Simon replied before correcting himself. “I planned a very limited test run to intimidate Illusea into leaving us alone. To show them I would do worse if the Oracle didn’t cease her campaign against Endymion.”

“And hypothetically, if they had called your bluff…” Anna met his gaze. “What would you have done then?”

Simon remained quiet for a moment, and Anna gave him a wary look that reminded him of the one Euphemia reserved for her second—and probably soon-to-be ex—husband. It was unbearable. “The Oracle didn’t give me any choice. She just won’t stop hounding us.”

“I… I understand being the Overlord means making tough decisions, but…” Anna gathered her breath. “Some of the Remembrances I unlocked from Saint Pharis… they involved Mardok.” She looked away in unease. “He did unspeakable things to her to break her faith.”

“You don’t have to say it, Anna.” Simon had heard enough of what Mardok put Pharis through from the source itself.

“There was someone with him when he tormented her.” Anna rubbed her arms as if struggling with a sudden chill. “Some three-eyed corpse in a cloak.”

“You saw Elios Magnos, the Dark Lich?” Simon knew that as well from his and Voltobauta’s interrogation of Pharis’ ghost in a previous reign, but he hadn’t expected Anna to see the Librarian too.

“I recall that… that thing’s words. ‘Why is Your Majesty spending so much time on this unworthy successor?’ and Mardok answered, ‘The brighter the star, the harder it falls.’” Anna gathered her breath. “I don’t know why, but… looking at you makes me think of that.”

And indeed, those words rattled Simon to his core. The Oracle’s words came back to haunt him; how he had been destined to become a Paladin, and how the Overlord Class had robbed him of that future.

Why did the Crimson Throne pick him of all people? Why did his predecessors, if they decided their successor through a majority vote? Because he had killed Balzam the most? His father might have voted to keep the Class in the family, and Gargauth would have voted against anybody, so Mardok must have been the tiebreaker.

Why would he choose Simon? As a favor to his old accomplice, Elios Magnos? Or to prove a point? To see if the Overlord could corrupt its once greatest foe into a tyrant?

Thalas frowned at him. “You think you’re still you, after everything.”

This was getting on his nerves. “I’m not possessed, Thalas.”

“No. It would be so easy if you were.” Thalas stared at his axe with a pensive expression. “My Berserker Class feeds on rage. I think that’s why Father gave it to me.”

“Are you blaming your Class for your own insecurities, Thalas?”

To his surprise, his brother had somehow become mature enough to shake his head. “It didn’t make me angry at you, but it rewarded me for it. It liked my fury. It turned it into pleasure with each level-up, until hating you became as natural as breathing. The harder it became to get the rush, the more I craved it. Our Classes train us, Simon. They train us to like what they want, until it becomes what we want.”

Simon scowled behind his helmet. His brother’s words echoed his own experience with level-ups a bit too much.

Devastating cities under Vouivre’s leadership used to disgust and frighten me, but now I’ve laid waste to Valne and Muse without much remorse. Part of Simon believed he was righteous in this, that it was different because they had declared war on him first, that doing terrible things in the present was worth the power to eventually do good in the future, yet his actions had slain countless innocents as collateral victims. Can you bloody your hands so much that even time-travel can’t wash it all away?

The question remained on his mind as they crossed the Sanctuary’s border to find it despoiled.

Simon would never forget the day he first found this hidden paradise. He recalled the beauty of its islands, the verdant vegetation, the incredible sight of the kish and other wonderful creatures soaring through the sky without a care in the world.

The imperial army had since turned it into an open quarry.

There was no other way to describe what the archipelago had transformed into. The once-green and bountiful surface of its islands was now cloaked in alchemical fumes, toxic smoke, and miasma produced by laboratories and open mines set up by imperial soldiers. They mined the local manaliths with reckless abandon, heedless or uncaring of the risk of destabilizing the Sanctuary.

The winged creatures once soaring in the sky were mostly gone, replaced by armed harpies and warbeasts. Simon only had to take a look at the surface of Zephyr to tell where most had gone. Massive birdcage pens now stood where the kish villages used to be, their people imprisoned there under the watch of imperial soldiers. Simon couldn’t see Eole among them, but he knew she had to be there.

“I told them to leave the bigger islands alone,” Simon muttered to himself. He felt sick merely staring at the birdcages, especially after they outlawed shifter slavery in name and deed. “I ordered them to stick to the smaller ones and leave the kish be.”

Boreas had changed the most though. Its great manatree was now covered in black tendrils infecting its bark and roots. A familiar, faint cloud of miasma now hovered over its branches, bathing the land in its toxins. The Forbidden Keep ominously floated right above Boreas, a massive chain binding it to Junon’s tree.

“What is that?” Anna covered her mouth at the sight. “What happened to that manatree? It looks… it looks sick.”

Simon could wager a guess: Lauriane had planted the Muse’s fruit on Lady Junon’s island. The miasmic tree’s seed had infested its cousin like a parasite, likely granting it influence over the dryad and the Sanctuary’s movements.

Worse, his Dark Visionary sight picked up on the veins of miasma coursing through Boreas. It had infected many of Boreas’ manaliths and caused a familiar resonance.

“Miasma and mana empower each other when used together.” Simon’s hands gripped his seat’s armrests. “Lady Barbatos, how would it affect the expected impact?”

The more Isabelle pondered his question, the paler she became. “It would potentially double the expected power,” she finally concluded, a dark scowl on her face. “Enough to wipe out an entire continent, or cause massive tidal waves.”

Including Illusea, or all of Muse.

Surely Lauriane wasn’t planning to drop the entire Sanctuary on one of them as revenge for what happened to him? Simon knew she could be ruthless when it came to defending their family, but this… this was madness.

Simon attempted to contact his messenger imps now that he had crossed the barrier, only to find their minds muddled and muffled. Were they sleeping on the job, or… sedated?

The doubt continued to gnaw at Simon’s heart as Dassein—who had adopted Casval as his current mount—and the wyvern rider corps arrived to escort the group to the Forbidden Keep. The fortress had been modified so its entrance could also serve as an airship deck, allowing the Malevolence to make landfall and Norbelle to simply hop off her own ride.

Simon walked out of the airship with the rest of the royal family, but ordered a handful of his branded retainers to stay on the airship just in case they had to take off in a hurry. His instincts told him he better be careful for some reason.

“Your Majesty, everyone,” Dassein said with a deep bow once he welcomed them at the keep’s entrance. “We didn’t expect your visit. To what do we owe the pleasure?”

“You’ve begun to move along an unauthorized flight path, Dassein,” Simon said sharply. “Explain yourself.”

“What?” Dassein didn’t have a deceitful bone in his body, so Simon took his surprise as genuine. “I was not aware… you should take it up with Lauriane, she’s the one controlling the islands.”

“This chain must help control the local dryad,” Norbelle guessed after assessing the binding connecting the keep to the manatree below. “Oh, Lauriane. You were always the most ruthless of us when properly motivated.”

Anna scowled. “Where are the elves?”

“The elves?” Dassein repeated with a frown.

“I’m told elves inhabited the manatree’s flying island,” Anna said. “Where are they?”

“Inside the Keep,” Dassein replied. “Lauriane said she needed them to develop a new weapon against Illusea.”

A chill traveled down Simon’s spine as he walked into the Keep, ignoring Dassein’s protests and everyone else. He had spent enough time in the fortress to know where the dungeons and Nodens’ old labs were located. As he suspected, Lauriane had repurposed them into her own laboratory.

The ghastliest kind.

Simon pushed aside the guards—who didn’t dare stop their Overlord—to find the cells full of captive and sickened elves. Imperial scientists were busy injecting subjects strapped to tables with a black substance held in glass canisters. A handful of elven corpses lay on other tables, their skin covered in dark patches and their eyes devoid of life.

Anaximander was among their numbers.

The sight of his friend’s corpse laying on an operation table, his last moments of agony forever written on his face, left Simon spooked into silence for a second. He had taught him so much and had been a dear companion in a past reign, valiantly giving his life to defeat Nodens, and he had died a lab rat’s death even though he had nothing to do with the Oracle’s plots.

All to better refine a weapon to wipe out his own kind.

“What is this?” Dassein muttered to himself in horror while others covered their mouths or looked on grimly. He had never dared to visit this place.

“Death, Dassein.” Simon glanced at the black substance kept in the canisters. “Death in a bottle.”

uhhhhh genocide is never the answer.

InsertName099

Bioweapons, huh? Was wondering when we'd see something like this. Simon's dear sister truly is ruthless when he's threatened... Thanks for the chapter!

José

great chapter, thanks voidy! now we’ll get to see the dark side of Laurianne that’s been hinted at so often

TDMC

Lauriane “the secret ingredient is war crimes” magnos

Akirish

I think we can all agree that it is Simon's fault. He shouldn't have worried his sister with his almost death. Lauriane did nothing wrong.

CentaureHeart

So, Louis' madness looking pretty good now uh

bob

The magnus family is truly just goated like that, every one of them except maybe thalas

Daedalus

Thalas being instrumental to Simon avoiding full corruption is an excellent way to maximally infuriate both Balzam and Mardok, and therefore is the best possible route.

gostsamo

And all I'm thinking is: that would be lots of xp for the overlord class. Corrupting not only Simon. Interesting if there is a treachery in the making. Neutralizing his imps smells of the cobweb.

Ikawaii

Simons face when the biological weapons maker starts making biological weapons.

Alchem

Welp, Lauriane went off the deep end. As bad as that could be used as a mass bio weapon, Simon should still note down the recipe and use it as a single use poison or something he could add to his weapon edge when fighting the Oracle in a future reign. Doubt he does it but would at least make all this suffering mean something if it helps a future reign.

Zodius W.

Those who doubted Lauriane's insanity, look at her now. The entire Magnos bloodline is rotten in the most interesting ways.

R

Simon when all of Muse gets turned into Cronenberg monsters: 🙂 Simon when some elves die on Sanctuary: 😱😭🥀 (he knows people from there)

Noxx

Nobody expects the Yandere Inquistion!

Bilbo

Make sure to write down formula so you can pass it along to sis Laura in the next reign :^)

Flufflez

Laurianne: "Why did you make me do this? Think, Simon! We're fighting to make sure our family survives!"

Noxx

Wouldn’t make sense. The cobweb, and ergo the dominator faction wants to rule the world. Obliterating a continent, or maybe more seems like a destroyer action.

Cindermoth

Yeah and it would be a really nice character arc for both of them. Thalas has shown twice now that you can overcome a class' influence. And well, he is the only person Balzam never managed to break, despite trying very hard

intemoc

I still don't understand why Simon is so worried after so many reigns. It's going to be a reset anyway.

Zenmeerkat

Sounds like the immortal elves have never fought a Total War, something I find unlikely... they must have known stuff like this would happen, maybe it fits their agenda

Zihjam

It’s the question, and Lauriane’s answer, Simon finds, is yes.

gostsamo

Killing the Oracle and eliminating Illusea from the scene is a very good opening move to conquer the rest though.

Hubris

Genocide is the question and the answer is yes. - Lauriane, probably

Nightmare Lore

His and Laurianne are one and the same. Genocide. They just take different methods.

ranoche

All throughout the story weve been seeing simon going "is Lauriane ok? I hope she's ok. She's always treated me right. Is she safe?" As it turns simon really didn't know how much an absolute psycho she was

Leo S.S.

This chapter was so darkly comedic. What do you mean that you’re surprised your evil army did something evil Simon. Same shit with Anna and the other saner members of the family “overlords make hard choices” my ass. Great chapter, had me laughing the entire time. Lauriane really popped off too, cool.

Robocub

Lauriane "War Crimes" Magnos

Ty Reol

Damn. I'm happy part of what I commented in the previous chapter got into the real story. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. With that being said, I still believe in Simon's goodness! The blood on our hands never goes away, but it's up to us to choose what choices to live with. Thalas being unexpectedly wise in this reign.

Kip

Even through death, Simon doesn’t learn who’s to be trusted lol I understand trusting Laurianne but leaving so much free reign to Louis then acting shocked is hilarious

Ikra

Ah the sweet irony of Simon being like Oracle, caring about elves more than humans

Ikra

Simon face when biological weapon is used against people he knows instead of using it himself against others

Alibhai

Louis isn't better just because he prefers certain methods of genocide over the other. Laurianne wins by way of superior R&d while Louis is partial to martial might.

Ikra

Thalas is goated, he was the only one Balzam couldn't break

Alibhai

@Daedalus & @Cindermoth both these comments are very insightful and they made me think ..... perhaps Thalas would have been better suited to be a paladin in another life. Unlike louis who I can only imagine as the warrior.

Jani Aartti

TFTC! So between Louis and Lauriane it would seem Louis is actually the sensible one. What a horrifying sentence.

Eternal Yujin

Thalas might actually be my favourite character—and I can't believe I'm saying it. That's what, two times that he's managed to grow out of being a humongous piece of shit? Balzam didn't give a rat's ass about him because at his core, all he wanted to was to be loved and love others. I swear, and I've said this before... everytime I think my opinion of Balzam Magnos has hit rock bottom, it sinks even lower. This man absolutely ruined his kids, Simon & Thalas worst of all because they dared to want to not be as evil as him?

Alibhai

WHO? Who doubted her insanity? The story, the characters, the comments literally everyone saw the turn. I think most of us are really surprised only by the details. No one cared when Simon was melting the citizens of Muse. The fact that a peaceful people were brought to this as result of Simon's actions is what makes it shocking.

The Bee

It’s not his fault for getting sniped on coronation day 😭

Daedalus

She was so nice and polite, of course she’d go full Canadian.

Diego H.T.

Hermano, enserio solo hace falta ver a Dassein con su manticora para que todos los Magnos sean unos raritos

Zodius W.

Some of the comments earlier in this route thought Lauriane really isnt as crazy as the arc synposis implied was making reference to them

Alibhai

So we got fantasy nukes, chemical warfare (slimes) and now biological weapon. Any other water crimes left? Simon is open for suggestions folk. Remember 95 is half of 99 and our Overgoat is still at 80(more or less. Don't remember the exact level). Just evil stuff on top of evil stuff .........I'm tired boss.

Krosh

So, we know that Simon is a compatible host for Asterion, and Louis for the Lion. I'm going to bet the rest of the siblings are also compatible, and Laurianne just merged with Nodens

granndfunk

I've said that Thalas should be the first, if any, to 'retain' some or all of their memories along with Simon. It would be such a unique relationship and would lead to some fun scenes

granndfunk

Oh, so you're saying this is the Musan Sniper's fault. Nice.

Navarog

Maybe world will reset. But not Simon... Time travelers need to be weary of that, or they risk becoming some kind of Mob Zeus.

granndfunk

It's never a full reset for him, though. There is always lingering guilt, suffering, pain, etc from a previous reign. And the worse and worse he does, the harder it will be to 'reset back to normal' for himself. Even in this chapter he points out what used to shock him in earlier reigns doesn't anymore because he has been desensitized. So does he truly believe this is all going to be worth it in the end, or is he just telling himself that?

Sahrami

Lets be real. The Oracle will never be backing down, because her perspective looks further than the reigns. And the Overlord class goes beyond Simon, thanks the 3 backseat throne sitters.

Darius Rochemore

I wonder if the light is just a force, or something self aware. I'd personally really like if it was not only conscious but also aware of the reigns and trying to help Simon because it knows what he is truly going through . Sadly i dont see how it would make much sense since he couldn't use prayers once helel was sealed ( the light wasn't helping him from what i understand ) . Anyway the more i think about it the more it becomes obvious to me that Euphemia's side is the only viable route if Simon wants to avoid war and slaughter in general ( if he decides to stay in house magnos ) .

Nyto

As ghastly as what our dear Laura yandere is planning... Hasn't the Oracle planned worse? She literally nuked the entire world and only saved the elves and a small noah's ark of other races, meaning that she has doomed the entire world's population to the brutality of the zodiac fiends

MaliMi

Is Thalas actually the most sane of Simon's siblings?

Vik M.

It'd be nice to see Simon pulled out of his death spiral of corruption by the person who was supposed to make it easier. Thalas, despite everything, is a deeply empathetic and loyal being. I wonder how different he would've turned out if he'd been given something like the Bard instead.

M

Thalas might be the worst character of them all, lacks conviction

Daniel Pataki

Can't we have a Monk apprenticeship reign, where Simon just meditates and maybe learns some techniques? It would flow really well from the conversation he had with Thalas and Anna...

Federico Bellavista

Lauriane "Geneva Suggestions" Magnos is at it again. Honestly, I still like her... despite how hard she's making it for me. But oh well, she had to have some screws loose to stand in the same camp as Louis "World War Me" Magnos.

Alibhai

There is chance a bunch of Balzams bastards are running around. The ones we have met are not even passingly acquainted with sanity.

Antony444

I advise Simon to think of it as everything being Balzam's fault. That's nothing but the truth, honestly.

Pedro Henrique

In this case his evil army went behing his back to do something evil and of enormous consequence, wich IS cause for alarm. Lauriane went as far as neutralizing Simon's imps wich served as surveilance, so she knew for a fact she was doing something against the wishes of the Overlord.

Stylemys

I wonder if one of Mardok’s long-term plans for Belamine was also to twist her into a potential heir to the Overlord class. That would utterly devastate the Oracle.

Apoorva Pendurthi

I predict that Thalas will be the one to permanently kill Balzam in the future. It'd be incredibly ironic that the son he wanted to kill him, does so at the only time it actually matters.

Maxime Delabrière

It's even funnier that it's Canadian, when you know about the war crimes they committed during World War I

Akirish

I doubt Thalas count as not broken. Nothing good in not standing up against abusive, cucking you father.

intemoc

@granndfunk > here is always lingering guilt, suffering, pain, etc from a previous reign Exactly: I don't understand why he's making such a big deal out of this. Simon should have realized long ago that all these emotional ups and downs won't lead to anything good, and he should have developed some Buddhist-like skills. Instead, he only finds new reasons to worry. > the harder it will be to 'reset back to normal' for himself He doesn't need to go back to “normal,” because normal was just so-so—too sappy. > So does he truly believe this is all going to be worth it in the end, or is he just telling himself that? That's not the right way to frame the question. He doesn't have to “believe.” He has to set a goal, establish KPIs, and strive to meet them. As quantum mechanics experts sometimes say, “Shut up and calculate.”

Felix H.

Sometimes it is, there is no tool, no strategy, no action that can not be ignored when the survival of a world is in question. The question is not if genocide is an option, the question is it the best available option and actually brings reduls.

Daedalus

Granted, they weren’t war crimes at the time.

JJ

Thalas, The Paladin?

Denny Bradford

Simon needs to see this as a puzzle and figure it out piece by piece, iteration after iteration, so that he knows the optimal route in the only reign that matters. Right now, he is just blundering through each reign reacting or going with the flow, treating them as real lives almost and not a time loop. He needs to be more calculated and proactive in his decisions and plans. Like Zorian in Mother of Learning..

Denny Bradford

Nodens is so pathetic though, it’s almost an insult the best Magnos sibling..

Halfcrzy

Ahhh there we go. Th skeletons in the closet...

Nomad

Only the ones he knows personally 🤣

blib

I stopped reading for awhile so I'm late to this party, but Anna as Pharis isn't adding up for me. Helel was ALREADY imprisoned when Pharis was alive. Pharis was explicitly a light zealot obsessed with the Megalith and there is a 0% chance she never got close/made physical contact with it. So why is Helel still trapped? Euphamia's 1st Arc made it explicit the Light Visions were Helel's handiwork. Why can the much weaker, much less pious Anna do what presumable Pharis could not in freeing/merging with Helel? Regardless, at least Anna finally got some redemption in this arc. Between Simon's 1st marriage and this 2nd one it was nothing but twisting her into the most obnoxious character possible. Always taking a false moral high ground as the daughter of Captain Girldick, butcher of nations, she'd finish ~90% of her scenes with a Parthian Shot aimed at Simon. I get it was meant to be tomboyish and endearing, but it just read as bitchy hypocrisy.

LuciferLilac

Damn. I really did like Lauriane, but that selective empathy sure is a bitch, huh?

Diego Urbina

Dang, I'm liking the self reflection going on. So, an elite strike squad is going to attack right now isn't it? Without Louis there, they're either going to lose of be decimated.

Alibhai

I don't know whether he ever intended her to inherit the class but he definitely meant to humiliate her as much as possible. Probably because she killed him at least once.

Frizzo

This just made my day 😂😂

It probably has to do with Helel not having subverted the Light Megaltih when Pharos was around. I forgot the exact ratio, but I think 1 out every 5 prayers were answered by Helel. So it makes sense that Helel could possess the reincarnation of a Saintess that had a strong connection to the Light by subverting that connection.

Stylemys

I think it has more to do with her facilitating the elven exodus to the moons. Remember that when she ask him why he was doing this to her, he said something like, “because the thought that someone somewhere could live without fear utterly offends me”. The greatest slight against Mardok wouldn’t be killing him (because the Overlord Class would just passes on), it would be forever escaping him (and his heirs).

Stylemys

Next reign, Simon is going to need to grill Belamine on whether the Healer Class can help with mental illness. Laurianne is always going to be a massive liability otherwise.

Pradian

Lauriane is of the crab sign ffs. At least get your lore right.

Krosh

Is she? I did not remember that, thanks for pointing it out!

dontcare7657

Wow Casval getting ridden by Rider. First Anna taking backshots at school, Then Euphermia, now Casval. NTR loop.

blib

If that were true then Simon's prayers would fail 80% of the time. (And they don't.) I know there was the bit about "1/5" but it makes even less sense mechanically than narratively since once Helel is perma-sealed he loses ALL access. The internal logic doesn't hold short of some as-of-yet unaddressed mechanics.

Nightmare Lore

Your thinking of the shifters and how they went almost feral because of the Church.

WizardClassic

Lauriane only cares about her family so the best way for Simon to protect the Sancturay and anyone else he befriends/loves in a future reign, is to marry them or revive Hector to be her moral compass. P.S.: We haven't seen much of Dassein or his marriage to Satine. Did it go well, is he actually 'riding' his Manticore or is he just gay or ace?

Bookworm bibliophile

I got that mc classes incentivise doing evil things but I feel like there is big focous on good and evil and not more on the world and exploring or conquering it. The entire world mc feels fregile and something that could be destroyed in whim

Guy

It's really cool all around to see the domino effect of Simon essentially dying. It's a neat look into the world and characters that we haven't been able to see before and opens a lot of interesting possibilities.

Skitterdidnothingwrong

I’m not sure why anyone ever thought she would or should? Simon’s family are basically super powered terrorists and have been since long before the story start. Simon being upset she didn’t ally with him after he didn’t kill a few spies is delusional

Skitterdidnothingwrong

Evacuating most of the world’s population before the apocalypse isn’t even remotely comparable to releasing a civilization ending bioweapon (months before the apocalypse). This what aboutism is insane. The best Magnos plan for the Zodiac parade so far is to abandon everyone but the army, ride it out in the bunkers, and try to take some land back afterwards.

A Zen

I blame THE SNIPER

Doofenshmirtz

I guess the coma worked wonders for giving him some clarity, though Lauriane going full Noden definitely helps

Doofenshmirtz

Yo Balzam bro we know its you hop off the alt

A Zen

We dont know if it's a full reset. In some reigns things got pretty borked and there's this whole issue with the 'backdrop of reality' where Simon invokes paradoxes... So this might as well be NOT a full reset

ConstanTeen

I bet one of his motivations was how close they were the first time around he took Simon in, it would definitely please Balzam to see two people destined to be besties hating each other guts. We'll probably see in a remembrance.

Nyto

I mean it’s not that serious lol we’re talking about fantasy elves But the oracle didn’t evacuate most of the world’s population they only evacuated close allies and all the elves. For the rest of the world? Slavery and torture!!

Nyto

And no the best Magnos plan is to nuke the elves and harvest the zodiac parade for exp!!!

Exarion

I've never liked Laurianne or any member of the Magnus house. I feel like Norbelle, while a crazy person, is the least evil one of them so far. I've been hoping Laurianne proves me wrong, but she keeps getting deeper in the blacklist instead. Finally, Thalas is beginning to look like the sole redeemable member of this family.

Skitterdidnothingwrong

Didn’t she get everyone near a Mana Tree? Do we know how many people that would be? I thought they were around most places. We really only saw the footage from the one bunker so I guess it’s hard to say how many people she saved Sure lots of people died or were enslaved by the demons, but that’s the demons doing that not the Oracle (and again, the Magnos are going to abandon everyone too) . It’s not really reasonable to assume everyone will live through the apocalypse.

Any prayer that Simon casts is answered by Helel, so his ratio is pretty much 5/5. There’s also the bit about purified Miasma that turns into Mana and Simon being only capable of using Miasma based spells. Once Helel gets sealed she can’t can send out that “purified” Miasma, so it tracks that Simon can’t use prayers unless he goes through the same process Helel did.

Eternal Yujin

I honestly think that would be totally believable with the way Simon and Thalas' relationship has developed over the reigns.

blib

Except Helel can't tell whose prayers she's answering because Simon is protected by Anaethmic Secrecy. (Even before he was protected by that Title that converted his Dreadful Aura into a Light based ability.) Thus she has to be answering 100% of all prayers (established as untrue by the 1/5 comments). OR Simon has to have an 80% fail rate on casting. And it can't simply be Mana vs Miasma since it's explicitly stated the prayer is just the bridge and even Frey or the Paladin were receiving Miasmic tainted prayers 20% of the time. But neither option is in play, thereby creating the discrepancy.

Pradian

Lmfao smooth brained enough to fall into marduk's trap. The Overlord level up functions like drugs and desensitized the users as shown in this chapter. People like you who functions like they are above such temptation always make me laugh. The greatest enemy in this story is Simon's dark side and you don't even realize it, what a joke.

00Resu

Anaethmic Secrecy only prevents scrying and divination, and I imagine the false holiness works in a similar method to Helel’s process. It doesn’t change the fuel (Miasma), only what it appears as. Simon is only able to cast prayer spells because Helel answers 100% of his in place of the Light Megalith. The only time his prayers fail is when Helel isn’t capable of replying (reinforced seal). The 1/5th estimate only applies to everyone else, since the Light Megalith can answer their prayers.

Diego Urbina

Lol, he was properly horrified when he turned them into monsters. He just has a tendency to try out new things without experimenting because he can rewind the effects.

Simon

In discord, the author said that Norbelle is charismatic and hiding her cruelty well, so people have no idea. Actually, Norbelle is a complete psychopath.

Bilbo

Man it would be cool to have Lauriane go "But Simon. I've dropped Barbatos five minutes ago".

Cameron Pickerill

"Yes my evil minions go forth and do evil muahahah- wait NO NOT LIKE THAT"

Hubris

Well, if super powered terrorists are threatening to fuck up the whole world, a rational actor would consider giving in to their demands. Oracle on the other hand is convinced in her divinations (that were often wrong when concerned other overlords) so ANY outcome is better then leaving overlord be.

intemoc

@Pradian Well, at least my smooth brain is smart enough to realize that drugs don't work that way, and anyone would become desensitized in those circumstances. And also, these brains are enough not to spout nonsense about dark, light, and other sides of varying degrees of illumination.

Exarion

She clearly has sociopathic tendencies. But there's no evidence so far that she has done as much evil as Simon. Compare Norbelle to Louis and Laurianne, who, from the start of the story, are willing to burn the world down rather than surrender power. Mind you, they're not even planning that due to some apocalypse like Simon. I guess the story is yet to give us a proper justification for these 2

SusshiRoll

Simon the Coward at it again.
