Previous Chapter

Lauriane had transformed Nodens’ cathedral into a command center.

She welcomed them inside, having modified the place and turned it into a room not unlike an airship’s bridge. Holographic crystal balls connected to pipes ferrying miasma from across the fortress floated on mechanical panels overseen by her personal staff. Simon wondered if his sister had already set this up before he even took a bullet to the head.

He was uncertain of everything now.

“Simon, Anna,” she said warily. She could see the expressions on their faces as Dassein brought the royal couple into the room. “I didn’t expect your visit.”

“I tried to inform you through my messenger imps, but they wouldn’t answer,” Simon replied. The slight hint of guilt in his sister’s gaze confirmed his worst suspicions. “We were… worried.”

“They say we are following an unauthorized flight path, sister,” Dassein said. “Is that true?”

“I received no order against our current route,” Lauriane replied, matching Simon’s gaze. “You gave me full authority over Operation Meteor, Simon. I simply acted as I thought was best.”

“Was creating an anti-elf virus part of the operation as well?” Anna asked sharply.

“No, that was a personal side-project.” Lauriane cleared her throat. “Don’t worry, Anna, we’ve developed a vaccine to go along with it. Lady Firewand and our elves will be fully inoculated.”

Our elves. There was something eerily disturbing about the way she phrased it, as if any life outside of their loyalists had no value. Had she simply overreacted to his near-death experience out of grief? Or had the signs always been there, and he simply refused to see them?

“Did you sedate my messenger imps?” Simon asked, hoping—nay, praying—for a reasonable and sensible explanation for all of this.

Lauriane straightened up, a look of guilt flashing on her face. “I would have woken them up had there been an emergency.”

Which was a nice way of admitting that, yes, she did. Simon’s heart turned cold in his chest, his hands tightening into fists. How could the one person he had always thought would be on his side no matter what, the only member of his family whom he shared a bond of mutual affection with, act like this?

“Why?” Simon’s voice broke at the betrayal. First Eole, now Lauriane? “You’re the only one of my siblings I trusted without reservation. Why did you seek to deceive me? Because you feared I would stop you?”

“I didn’t want you to sully your hands, Simon,” Lauriane defended herself, a hint of emotion breaking through her tone. She did sound sincerely guilty. “This burden will be mine alone to bear.”

“The burden of what, destroying the world?” There was ice in Anna’s voice. “Lauriane, do you realize what you’re doing?”

“Yes, I’m protecting our family from those who will stop at nothing to tear us apart.” Lauriane straightened up, her spine made of steel. “We’ve tried to make peace with these people, and they would rather let us die during the Doom. Why should we owe them any mercy? We will end this war before any Paladin, elven hit squad, or Musan colossus reaches our shores.”

Dassein’s eyes widened in horror as the truth finally hit him. “Wait, sister, are you planning to drop this entire archipelago on our enemies?”

“We can’t protect our family with half-measures, Dassein,” Lauriane replied with a kind determination that eerily reminded Simon of Louis. “We will launch the three smaller islands at Lore, Muse, and Illusea, followed by dispersal of the anti-elf viral agent in their airspace. If all that fails to secure the Oracle’s surrender, then we will launch the miasma-empowered Boreas into the ocean between Muse and Illusea. The impact will create a tidal wave of immense proportions that will wipe away both countries.”

“And the Worldtree along with it!” Dassein shouted, while both Simon and Anna had been shocked into silence. The mere fact that a natural follower like the Rider would protest so vocally at such a plan spoke volumes about its insanity. “It won’t just hurt Illusea, Lauriane! The resulting ecological collapse—”

“Will be a temporary setback, and a quick solution to the elven problem.”

She’s possessed. She has to be under some kind of mental influence. Simon simply couldn’t believe what his sister was saying otherwise. Or else she doesn’t fully understand the consequences behind this plan.

“Lauriane, the Worldtree regulates Brimir’s cycle of souls,” Simon reminded her. “Its destruction will tear life apart, destabilize the Worldsoul, and cause an undead plague. It’ll be as great a disaster as the Zodiac Parade.”

“How can you say that when this very place proves that this theory is wrong?” Lauriane waved her hand at the cathedral. “The Sanctuary’s dryad was long disconnected from the manatree network, as was the Stone Muse. Both could sustain different ecosystems on their own without the Mana Goddess’ guidance.”

“One is a demon-infested hellhole, and the other a place so fragile that Thalas was stronger than their god!” Simon countered. “I have seen what happens when the manatree network is disturbed in my visions! Even assuming they can eventually recover, the earth will splinter and continents will fall apart! The death toll will be unimaginable!"

“Maybe,” Lauriane conceded, “but in the end, you’ll be safe. There will be no Oracle, White Unicorn, or false goddess to oppose us.”

“You’re talking about committing mass genocide!” Simon angrily shouted back. What madness had gotten into her? Louis must have filled her head with his diseased ideas when Simon was in a coma. “And even excluding the bombardment, you’re talking about using a biological weapon to wipe out an entire Tribe!”

“You used one against Muse yourself, Simon.” Lauriane’s gaze turned icy. “Our current virus was developed using samples from your Edict.”

There were words that could utterly destroy a man, and those ones hurt more than the Musan Sniper’s holy bullet. The sentence made Simon flinch and waver.

Lauriane immediately followed through with another justification. “You must understand all these people will never stop hounding us. House Magnos will only prosper once all of its enemies are dead. Yes, a few innocent lives will be lost—”

“Millions of lives!” Anna snapped.

“—but you and everyone I care about will be safe. That is all that matters to me.” Lauriane met her younger sibling’s eyes. “This is all for you, Simon.”

“Don’t use me as your excuse,” Simon replied, his hands shaking. “I didn’t sign up for this.”

“They shot you in the face, Simon!”

A short silence settled over the room after that outburst. Lauriane Magnos never shouted, or showed grief.

“When Hector was slain, do you know what father told me? That his death happened because our enemies didn’t fear me enough.” Lauriane’s expression and resolve turned to steel. “You nearly died, Simon, and I will never, ever, fail in my duties again. I will not apologize for it, I will not relent, and I will never show mercy to our enemies.”

Was that why Balzam had allowed Hector to die? To better twist his daughter’s grief into fanatical hatred of their family’s enemies? How could their father’s shadow still twist everything he had touched in life?

Simon pondered what to say as he stared at Lauriane. He could see the grief that motivated her actions, the pain and fear that had festered in her heart. She didn’t know death was a mere inconvenience to him at this point. From her point of view, she had nearly lost her little brother to the enemy and simply took steps to ensure it never happened again.

But did it excuse everything?

Simon was finally starting to see the ugly side of his sister; the aspect of her he had overlooked—nay, willfully blinded himself to—out of love for the only family member who had ever supported him unconditionally. This was the Lauriane who had chosen to side with a madman like Louis and support the War Party.

Lives outside those she cared about personally didn’t matter to her. She felt a sense duty to the empire and had enough morality to at least make a token effort at trying to settle for more peaceful solutions… but she was so devoid of empathy for anyone outside her loved ones that things like genocide had become as acceptable a solution to her problems as sending a strongly-worded letter.

Just like Simon himself.

She was right: what was the difference between her elven plague and the one he had unleashed against Muse? One could even argue the former was more moral in that it targeted only a specific population and had a pre-made cure, when the latter was utterly indiscriminate. He too had considered an all-out war of annihilation as an acceptable solution to his problems, while finding pretty justifications for his cruelty. Destruction and domination had simply become second nature to him, an acceptable tool in his arsenal.

Should he… should he let the bombardment happen? The process was already underway, and he would get exp from it. He could just do it once, just once, see what happened and reap the experience to ensure he never had to do it again…

“You don’t have to bear that burden, Simon,” Lauriane said. “I will pull the trigger. Your hands will be clean.”

They won’t. That was a gentle lie Simon couldn’t believe in, and the look Anna sent him made it ring all the more hollow. It won’t be just one time.

Just this one reign. Simon used to tell himself that when he was sacrificing people to the Stone Muse, working with the likes of the Cobweb, or destroying cities for Vouivre, yet here he was, giving orders dwarfing those timelines in malevolence and scale. Just this one reign.

But once you had done an atrocity once, it became easier to do it again, and again, and again until what was once the last option became the first. That was the true trap of the Overlord Class: the lie that you could gain the power to do good through evil acts without being changed by it.

Thalas was right. In the end, the Class insidiously reshaped its user in its image.

That was what Mardok had counted on when he and his successors selected Simon as their heir; that even someone with the potential to become the Paladin could be corrupted into a monster. Their monster.

“No.” The word escaped his mouth again and again, a prayer growing firmer with each utterance. “No, no, no, I can’t let them win…” Even the cold fingers on his throat weren’t enough to change his mind. “I can’t let them have their way.”

“They?” Anna asked with a frown.

“Cancel the bombardment,” Simon ordered Lauriane, ignoring the question. “Now.”

His sister scowled. “Simon, don’t look at me like that—”

“This is an order from your Overlord, Lauriane.”

Now it was her turn to flinch at his tone. She wasn’t speaking to her little brother anymore, but her angry superior.

“It’s… it might be too late,” Lauriane argued. “I’ve already set the course, and steering the archipelago away might cause it to dislocate. The barrier holding it all together is growing unstable due to the dryad’s continued attempts at freeing herself. I was about to order a general evacuation when you showed up.”

“Try it anyway!” Anna ordered with an empress’ authority. “You control this place, you can force it to turn around!”

“I could use my Ragnarok to alter the islands’ course,” Dassein suggested. “Our airships could then steer them away.”

Simon wasn’t sure anything short of a Tier X spell would inflict enough damage to redirect the islands, and the risk that it would detonate the manaliths was great. He couldn’t summon his Dungeon either since it was being used to sustain the Edict in Muse—he couldn’t lift it unless the country surrendered—and the only other option he could think of would condemn Junon to a fate far worse than death, not to mention everyone in the Sanctuary.

He was considering possibilities when an alarm noise resonated through the command center. Lauriane immediately pressed a button and caused a man’s face to appear on a crystal ball. “What’s going on, soldier?”

“A small airship fleet has entered our airspace, Your Highness,” the figure on the other side answered. “The flagship matches the description of Chrom Cruak’s flying pyramid, and they have dragons with them.”

Lauriane frowned. “Muse has found us.”

“Not just Muse,” Anna guessed with a dark scowl. “All of them.”

Simon nodded sharply. It was more likely than not that the Oracle had hastily put together a coalition the moment she received her visions about the Worldtree’s destruction. They must have likely planned to attack the Sanctuary eventually, but decided to strike immediately before they were fully ready out of fear of being wiped out.

“Send them a message telling them we’re cancelling the bombardment and agreeing to a sharing of the archipelago’s sovereignty," Simon ordered. “Ask for a ceasefire.”

“Your Majesty, they’ve already opened fire on our troops, and our defenses returned the gesture!” the messenger protested. “I don’t think they’ll listen!”

Simon cursed. Of course they wouldn’t listen, not after the Visionary visions. His words would fall on deaf ears.

Should he abandon the Sanctuary? It might once have been the best solution, but he couldn’t trust the likes of Vouivre or the Cobweb with it, since they wouldn’t hesitate to turn the islands around and throw them at Endymion or enslave the kish. The Oracle had already shown willingness to devastate Valne to destroy Frightwall or stall the imperial advance too. Sacrificing the archipelago wouldn’t seem like such a big price.

There was no easy solution to this problem.

“Send a distress message to Louis and the others,” Lauriane ordered the messenger before turning to her family. “We can’t let them reach this command center. Damaging the chain will release the shackles on the local dryad and the Stone Muse’s child alike. At best, the Sanctuary will break apart as the barrier grows unstable. At worst, the miasma fruit will finish infecting its host and turn into a new Darkwood. I have no idea what the outcome will be if this happens.”

“Lauriane, Anna, you stay there and find a way—any way—to stop the bombardment while Dassein and I handle this,” Simon ordered as he moved to the door. “Lady Barbatos will help. Order the troops to retreat to Boreas.”

“Simon—” Lauriane began, but he didn’t let her finish.

“Just… don’t, Lauriane.” Simon had too much on his shoulders right now to think straight. “Just don’t.”

He simply didn’t have the heart to talk to her right now.

Lauriane looked away, probably in remorse or shame, while Anna’s goodbye was more succinct. “Come back alive, please.”

“Is there any doubt?” Simon scoffed. “I’m the Overlord. In the end, I’ll always win.”

No matter how many tries it took.

—-------

The anti-Overlord alliance had come in force.

They had too few airships capable of crossing the Sanctuary’s barrier—they hadn’t managed to build more than four in spite of receiving Alcyone’s intel—but they weren’t short on aerial forces. Thousands of Lore’s pegasi knights carried soldiers into the sky, alongside griffin riders, colorful eidolons unknown to Simon, elementals, a small army of Illusea-made winged golems, and dragons.

Only one of them, Vouivre herself, was made of flesh, however. The draconic eidolon that Simon’s soldiers fought in Frightwall was here, but the bulk of their forces were mechanical imitations of gleaming metal, complex cogs, and spinning gears. Simon vaguely recalled seeing one of those machines in Cocagne, yet it was the first time he could see dozens of them gathered in one place. Many of them carried elven archers and spellcasters into battle.

Even Voltobauta’s flying ghost ship was present, carrying undead shrouded in mist to support his allies. Chrom Cruak’s flying pyramid loomed at the center of the enemy fleet, the same way Frightwall had served as a mobile base for Simon’s own imperial fleet. Its terraced surfaces were covered in manalith reserves used to fuel the mighty elven archmages’ spells. Simon wondered if that coward of an Oracle had dared to take the field among them.

Either way, the battle was well underway in the sky by the time he departed the Forbidden Keep on his dracozombie mount’s back. Dassein had lent Thalas his manticore while he rode atop Casval, and Norbelle stood on top of Azulbolla’s head with her arms crossed, doing her best to look fabulous. The Phoenix burned at her side, ready to defend their conquered territory. The Malevolence followed after them with its retainer crew and a cadre of harpy collaborators as an escort.

Lauriane had long fortified the islands after the kish revolt and a large chunk of Endymion’s airship fleet defended the Sanctuary. They exchanged fire with the invaders across the horizon, spells surging from all sides, wyvern riders and pegasi knights clashing spears and swords among the clouds.

Simon immediately barked orders. “Dassein, take down Vouivre! Thalas, Norbelle, escort the Malevolence and cast that pyramid down from the sky! I will take care of the rabble!”

He didn’t wait for them to answer him and didn’t expect them to; at this point, they all knew better than to disobey him. Empowered by buffs cast by his allies and his own Soul Sacrifice, Simon entered the fray at lightning speed, shrouding himself in a Nightveil to become a terrible incarnation of dread and darkness upon the battlefield.

The group split up to tackle different objectives, with Simon rushing closer to Zephyr, where most of the Lorean-side of the enemy forces had gathered to rescue the captive kish. They would be easier to deal with than the Musan machines and the elves.

A flock of pegasi knights assaulted him the moment he reached the soaring island’s shores. Simon activated his Dreadful Aura at the sight of them, but he didn’t use the Terror effect for once, since he knew many Paladin Vassals among them would be immune to the ailment.

He instead activated its Berserk feature to drive the enemy and their mounts to bloodthirst. The great, gleaming charge of soldiers collapsed into a rout as their own beasts frothed with rage, tossing them overboard into the void below or tearing each other apart. Simon slew the survivors with a single well-placed Darkflare that reduced all to nothingness.

As he suspected, the most dangerous enemy attempted to assassinate him the moment he showed himself.

Alcyone teleported right behind him and attempted to stab him, but Simon simply pushed her off his mount with a well-placed Chaos Wave. She reappeared not too far from his location, riding a pegasus and with murder on her mind.

“Overlord Magnos, I assume?” Alcyone’s mana sword replica gleamed in the sun as she teleported the rest of her Party to her location, each of them riding a flying mount. “Glad to finally put a stupid face on the bounty poster.”

“Same,” Simon replied as he found himself facing Alphonse’s party and Ser Richard, mace in hand. “Same, Alcyone.”

He guessed this was what the Fablan people called ‘karma.’

ohhh the end is near! thanks for the chapter!

Guy Cina

I always forget how bittersweet it is as a reader to see Simon’s former friends/lovers (even if Alcyone isn’t one) become enemies no matter how much Simon doesn’t want it

George R

Thanks for the chapter

Locnil

I forsee Alcyone as being an upcoming love interest. Has she ever mentioned having kids?

Reader

So, the entire family is full of psychos

Akirish

Really productive reign for Simon. Learned that he need to fight class influence, about nation's militaries, damned Musan sniper and Crafter and most important to not make Lauriane worry for him or else...

blib

Repost: "I recall your father had a similar plan to merge demons with goblinoids. We can pick up where he left off.” “My brother perished protecting her from a goblinoid ambush many years ago,” Cassandra said. “She was very sad about it.” Balzam murdered Hector 100% as part of his plans. Lucky for Laurienne and Simon, Balzam only cucked Thalas and Louis. Satine and Hector remain pure as driven snow. Hector's Executioner boypussy remains firmly intact and booty unbranded.

Mondred

Isn't Simon in his class suit? How is she seeing his face?

blib

Simon needs to make use of his Merchant swap skills again. The author forgot about his various rings for some time now. He also could steal Volt's brace of pistol idea and teleport in multiple miasma pistols as 1 shot weapons. The crafter arc could pair this with his first ranged technique. The possibilities are more interesting than the outcome since we know he's doomed to die at the end of each arc. It's less of how he dies, and how COOL he dies.

Cindermoth

Well, if he gets hurt now I think Laurianne will absolutely go through with her plan

alejandrox

Thanks for the chapter XD Well... let's see how it ends XD

EZ NOONB

Lauriane Did nothing wrong! Fuck em

Nightmare Lore

The whole family was broken into¹ being psychos. Dassein seems to just be apathetic in his morals while Thalas - ironically - is the most well adjusted in comparison. Hell, show him Simon as the Overlord and he's change for the better, which is more then I can say for the others! ¹: Italics

WizardClassic

So do you think Simon will die in a massive explosion or will the Paladin finally manage to kill the Overlord?

Pradian

Got to love how void need to spell it out for those readers who constantly argue that everything will reset anyway.

Nightmare Lore

Herosbane finally might take effect soon. Paladin had more then enough time to level.

Randoudo

I'm still confused why Simon let Louis, Maublanc and Euphemia at home. Being "grounded" isn't an excuse to rush into the reign ending fight without your strongest noble class members (who actually obey for once). Even just one of them is enough to "protect" the empire since every "Heros" are focused on the new calamity. Hell, even just Euphemia was enough to change dramatically the fight to come. I don't know it just feel like an easy way to end the reign.

Razor2811

You make me very sad, that Patreon doesn't have a dislike button.

Will

I know that this kinda clashes with the tone of the chapter. However, killing Alcyones and Ser Richard might just be enough for Simon to level up one more time. Alcyones is Level 75 and Richard is Level 70+. Simon already killed the rest of Alphonse’s party so there is no exp from that.

blib

Your the one paying $5 a month to read "Balzam's Power Bottom's" a Lit-RPG. Take it up with the author. I didn't write it. I just summarized it.

Ty Reol

"We're all hypocrites. Doing the same thing to each. Grief blinds us." What a way to showcase this phenomenonal theme with Laurianne and Simon. Epic battle with Simon and Alcyone incoming!? Where's Louis to back up Simon when you need him. I hope Simon can find it in his heart to forgive his family.

Flufflez

While Simon's realization about the Overlord's influence and desensitization is important, what are his alternatives to doing at least some evil to level up? He needs more POWAHH to make his family not tear the world apart, fight the Zodiac Parade, not get stomped on by the good guys (mainly the Oracle), and fight his predecessors. Simon should give pure monster-hunting a try, but if that's not enough, Simon does need to genuinely consider the greater good. He could just do nothing and not sully his hands, but as we saw with the Sanctuary and Ruins reigns, that leads to a whole bunch of suffering. Basically, I don't see a convenient, morally pure way for Simon to save the world. He'll need to walk the tightrope, doing just enough evil to get the strength he needs to save the world while still wanting to make Brimir better once his strength is sufficient. Even though I don't see Simon devouring a Monk perk, training with the Monk could help him limit mental corruption as he gains the ability to save people. Or, Simon could figure out how to visit other worlds and planes, so he has enough monsters to hunt down. Fighting Eidolans and making Dark ones should also be a good source of xp, though Dark Visionary mysteries make the morality of this unknown and dubious. Simon should try it out and keep an open mind for creative solutions, but if they don't work or if they're not enough, back to doing at least some evil. Evil should be a last resort, and Simon has been embracing it too readily recently, but a minimum of it may be necessary.

Randoudo

He grounded him when he needed him i still can't get over it😂

Hubris

>Norbelle stood on top of Azulbolla’s head with her arms crossed, doing her best to look fabulous Despite everything going on, Norbelle sets her priorities right

Bilbo

Heat map meme: the chapter

Hubris

I'd say we can call him friends with Alcyone

Leo S.S.

I’m glad Simon finally got a clue. Now he has to actually build up more guidelines and rules if we want this to stick. Besides that, hype for the Alycone fight.

mordante

You make Lauriane worry for you once, and she'll make you worry for her the rest of your life!

Revenant

I Know there’s still some time until it gets there but I am really curious about Simon last perfect run. Right now no matter what choices he makes at the start of a new reign. He only manages to stop his family of tearing each other to pieces by assuming the overlord mantle. I assume that will become a constant step to take.

mhaj58

Simon should not be so surprised, Laurianne admitted that she’d lay the Berwick Islands to ruin if she thought it would protect Simon. I guess the degree of her callousness is new, but not what she was capable of

Diego H.T.

How old is Alcyonne? Could she enter in the cults altars? Even if it's already taken by the vampire?

Diego H.T.

I would kill for the Crafter to look like an ADEPTUS MECHANICUS!!!🏔️💪🔥

WizardClassic

Yeah, leveling up is already a problem for Simon although he also gets experience from branding people and ruling if I recall. Shogun of terror is probably going to be a purely monster killing/conquest reign. On the subject of other planes though, The Painted Door reign might have clues since there was a painted door in the Underland series. Although we won't know anything until a later poll gives us a hint.

Ikra

Well Balzam had many attempts at raising them

Exarion

The more I watch Simon flounder around, the more I appreciate what a proper anti-hero would bring to this whole ordeal. There's no essence fighting them to the death as the alternative to killing them all, then dying after them. At least I'm the first case, you'd get some levels you could put to use next Reign. The biggest enemy is the Oracle, who is hell-bent on killing you and abandoning humans to the Zodiac Fiends. I don't see any other path than gaining enough power to force her to negotiate, or silence her without war. The more reigns it takes you to reach level 100, the more blood you will have on your hands overall and the more atrocities you will have to commit.

Alibhai

I think you are missing the point of the chapter man. The point is he won't be the same person by the time he reaches level 100. He has already changed so drastically from where the story began. And let's not be fooled by the last 20 levels. The amount of XP required for each subsequent level will be higher. Which means the amount of evil deeds he needs to commit will increase at the same untenable rate. He won't be the person that wants to save the world by then. At the very least his definition of saving the world would change.

Dew227

Ah, Simon – he doesn't know anything about terminology or rhetoric. > 'You're talking about mass genocide!' First off, the word 'genocide' already implies large-scale or total destruction, so saying 'mass genocide' is redundant – it's a pleonasm. Second, killing all your 'enemies' en masse isn't genocide, because it doesn't fit the motivation of destroying a national, religious, ethnic, or racial group. That's purely a political goal, so at best, it's mass murder and a war crime. This is what a lack of education does to rulers. He should hire teachers and carefully read the UN convention. Also, Simon’s kindness should be supported in some way, not just sabotaged. Overall, I’ve already come to terms with the fact that this arc is short — it doesn’t even explore the romance with Anna or the other girls, and there’s no point even talking about War and the others; I’m just waiting for the arc to end so I can take a break.

Bilbo

Honestly I'm don't think this chapter came off well. Its intent was to show that Laurianne is bad, and it spent a lot of time telling us that she is bad, but it did little to address her actual grievances and instead just dismissed them with Balzam programming lmao. Only thing we got is toddler tier "killing millions is bad ok?" which is like, no shit son, but ignores that Laurianne does this because said millions have their agency coopted by super precog for express purpose of eradicating her family and then turning the world into super giga hell for her own tens of millions of dudes. Worse yet, the chapter ends with our heroes running out to save the world because friendship is magic, just to get attacked by the same people they are trying to bat for yet again. Instead of making a point as to why Laurianne's approach is self defeating and punctuating it with some kind of event that would drive that home, we are instead shown instantly why peace and conversation is impossible even when you are literally trying to stop nuke launch against your enemies.

Alibhai

Simon just didn't want to see it until now. It helps that horrors were inflicted upon a group that he got along with in a previous reign.

Oarabile t

While I am happy Simon is fighting the overlord classes influence, it still doesn't change the fact that the are many people and factions who will try to kill him (especially the Oracle). We have seen reigns were Simon proposes peace but is met with declarations of war, where he leaves and tries to do something else but is always hunted and attacked, the cobweb is constantly working in the background making things worse and trying to release helel, hell most of the Zodiac fiends think he is mardok and try to kill him on sight. I don't see how he can hope to succeed in his goals without devastating a good chunk of the world or secretly helping a faction like the cobweb or casval and his sister in order to unite the world against them so they consider the overlord a lesser threat or at least are to busy to deal with him.

Alibhai

To be fair the story is about how Simon needs to get stronger by doing evil things. Now what that means to different readers is either A) He needs to find a way to not become corrupted or B) An excuse to do evil things. All in the name of "THE GREATER GOOD".

Alibhai

I don't think he's just going to get hurt. Either he's going to die or he's going to win. If he dies everything resets. He already got hurt once this reign I don't think void will do it again.

Alibhai

You know how in games you can have it so the characters helmet disappears for dialogue? It's kind of like that 🤭

Wilson Olmedo

I agree with the moral dilemmas Simon faces regarding his actions and choices; I just hope this doesn't turn into Blood and Fur, with him having a crisis of conscience in every single chapter.

Sly Bayesian Fox

I'm usually very frustrated by pussyfooting protagonists, but this story is definitely not it. We still got plenty of reigns, so Simon MUST be careful with how he spends them lest he becomes the very monster he hated (his father). No overlord had as many reigns as Simon to be twisted into a literal monster

El jefe Soy yo

I say Simon urgently needs something to help him counter the influence the Overlord class has on him; that’s why I think he needs a reign that allows him to study the Paladin class—even if he has to kill its wielder to obtain it.

Darius Rochemore

the first thing you said was the most important BY FAR

Stilico

He is lvl 79 and he still has 11/12 zodiacs to defeat under their peak fighting power.

Stilico

Additionally he hasnt actually killed most nobel class holders ie Euphemia, Louis, Oracle, Lich, Adventurer, Crafter, Laurianne, Norbelle, Cleric, Beast crestone Vouvoire, Dassein, Bard, Monk, Necromancer. Also a lot of high level elves in Ilusea and a lot of dryads and dragons. Not to mention the 4 guardian Eidol9ns and the 1 master eidolon. All of this added up should be enough to level all the way to mid 90s at least

Stilico

You have a very negative bias of the oracle and ut shapes your argument. Sure oracle as a precog ruler manipulated everything and cares the most about the elves, but under her the continent lives in peace and is not expanding to kill other areas. It is so much better than the world conquering, genociding empire of Simons. And also you dont know the elvish perspective - escaping makes sense if she foresees that the battle is lost anyway. Dont you want civilization and its legacy to survive?

Stilico

Alphones himself can give XP again and he is probably now very high level indeed. Also im hoping Alcyone has leveled higher this longer reign ie she is 80+ so she gives more XP

Stilico

Id love for the paladin to finally get one kill on Simon

Stilico

This arc has not been short, quite medium

Darius Rochemore

the sheer amount of DAMAGE if he could do if he casts another edict of eerie storm and boost it with vayan . Sacrificing the darkwood ( forcefully ending the previous edict that is still active ) is in my humble opinion necessary, losses be damned. He is hopelessly outnumbered by what seems to be aerial elite forces and structures and probably a very harmless sniper.... if he does not do that then i fear he will also lose people dear to him ..... HE MUST DO IT..... the stakes are simply too high ( the world, literally XD ) ( Feel free to put your own tactical opinion XD )

I think the answer is just meditation and dopamine detox.

He managed to defeat the cobweb, or at least the fiend running most of it, in Unicorn Overlord reign. If he can do it again and take out the mummy elf with the Pyramid as well (send a seperate team to attack that place simultaneously) then the cobweb is over

Endymion is internally peaceful that we know of and we know that Oracle is the one orchestrating its civil war so she sure as hell conquers in her own way, so that's just wrong. Not sure what stuff you said has to do with Laurianne not wanting to have her family murdered by elvish death squads and her country enslaved by super precog and then condemned to eternity of demonic survitude while their souls are denied paradise, which are Oracle's goals as per previous reigns.

a cool way to use the merchant crestone in 3 steps : 1) transform one sheep into gold -1kg of gold is roughly 4,4k dollars -1 sheep weighs on average roughly 75 kg - 330k dollars per sheep -3k sheeps = 1 billion dollars 2) use buddy guard that consumes gold to invoke the equivalent of death itself 3) you win ( i know the economy is not the same but i think there's potential XDD)

Ikra

I'm pretty sure it doesn't work as the gold is marked as cursed/fake one

Ikra

I think of it as how Spider-Man's mask shows his emotions in comics and animation. Or how various skeletons show emotions despite being well bones

He wears Overlord armor and rides on a giant undead dragon. It's hard to mistake him for anyone else.

I'm curious about his next reign, when he forms an alliance with Vouivre, and even a romantic thread between them. An interesting reward, which would also be a huge blow to Simon's psyche from the previous Overlords, would be another upgrade to his mount – still a dragon, but in a form reminiscent of Vouivre in her Beast form.

Darius Rochemore

playing devil's advocate: they said it was magical gold not fake , it is by all intents and purposes still gold until dispelled. Still i can see your reasoning as sound so point taken

I wonder if in the end, there’s going to be two different path choices, destruction of the crestone/overlord concept or complete embracement and depending on the future reigns taken the path is chosen.

Hubris

Aura is kept between reigns, so she is executing the most optimal strategy

The rnd always justify the means, that has never been different no matter the story or the history. But as Simon figured out, the problem is, that one atrocity, however well justified it is, eases the way into the next. Very, very few can become powerful enough to not NEED to commit atrocities, without loosing themselves to how often it had been necessary along the way...

Antony444

Well...this was quite something, Lauriane. And she didn't even need the Overlord class to reach that level of 'let's murder them all!'

Skitterdidnothingwrong

I’m really glad Simon is getting a reality check. He’s been needing one for a while now!

Doofenshmirtz

Idk man, wouldnt bombing the elven homeland, where basically all of them live as far as weve seen, to smithereens while releasing a virus that specifically only kills elves that dont support your cause count as genocide?

Ah blib with his smooth brain takes who said edicts are tax season and the guy who paid $5 a month to complain and cry about Anna until she said she is willing to share Simon. Hilarious. For the smarter users, Void said Balzam wasn't responsible for it but he let it happened. Take whatever this incel say with a huge pinch of salt.

Fog Witch, Bringer of Rats

He's still probably shaken by the revelations that his sister is evil and he is too. Might as well end this reign before he lets another genocide happen again "just this loop"

Pradian

How did Alycone teleport if the barrier is still up.

Borat

Hold on, if the battle is taking place above the shores of Zephyr shouldn't Junon's anti-teleport barrier be in effect? How is Alcyone teleporting?

blib

The flew outside to interdict them before they could reach the island. Thus are presumably outside the radius.

"I'm Karen from HR and I'm mad that people have differing opinions on fast-food web novel ontology." It's a story that was marketed as an evil class with time powers raising moral questions, specifically utilitarian morality versus normative ethics. Who the fuck did you think it was going to attract as a reader base?

Alibhai

The barrier prevents teleportation in and out of the area. Once you're inside you can teleport within the area is how I interpreted it.

Tate Browder

Bro 😭😭 vouivre glazers are crazy

locky

she can teleport inside the barrier, just can't teleport from inside to outside.

Nategator

It is still early in his reigns...

Nategator

Adverturer perk. Invisible helmets during the dramatic scenes.

Nategator

Yes. They are all products of Balzam's final reign.

Nategator

Perhaps Thalas and Louis are foreshadowing? Simon could eventually become the expression of the class or he could ultimately master the class after self-reflection & growth?

Exarion

My idea is not "commit the atrocities for the sake of it only." What would be more logical is to avoid "wasting" the atrocities he has already committed. He might as well get power from them instead. If the idea is to avoid levelling up the Overlord, then his current strategy makes sense. But if he does want to level up, he has just delayed the inevitable, while still willingly walking into a "world war" after starting the mass extinction of Musan citizens The Overlord cannot make peace with the Oracle unless the way the Overlord or Oracle works is changed fundamentally. Without that, the only way to get her cooperation is to be powerful enough to force her cooperation or kill her. Basically I'm seeing that without changing the Overlord Class, there's no avoiding mass murder, genocide, and other war crimes. He will do it eventually. And it's better he do it in self-defense now, than unprovoked later
