Previous Chapter

Simon’s dark eidolons merged into something utterly new.

Their miasma swirled and recombined. Their very essence resonated and aligned like two songs harmonizing into a pleasant equilibrium. The Devil-Mirror and the Chainpiper were consumed into a singular creature completely unlike its components.

It was entirely humanoid for a start; a slim figure with two legs, two arms, and a head. It vaguely resembled a knight, except its armor was made of polished obsidian mirrors rather than steel, and its face was a ghastly, eyeless grin full of razor-sharp teeth. Its edges blurred like unreal shadows on a wall.

“My Darksense…” Alphonse tensed up in sudden alarm and nervousness, like a common man facing a new predator. The entity unsettled him as much as Simon himself. “Like needles under my skin…”

A strange sensation seized Simon at the sight of this being, and not just because of its bizarre appearance and the nature of its existence. His own body felt lighter all of a sudden, fragile and evanescent. The very fabric of reality appeared to warp and bend slightly around him.

Phul, the Vainglorious

Level 61 Syncretic Dark Eidolon of Vanity, Mimics, Actors, Mockery, and Anxiety.

Type: Artificial.

Auspices: Delusional Space: Your illusion-type spells and effects become tangible and can inflict real damage.

Syncretic Dark Eidolon?

The creature, Phul, turned towards Alphonse and immediately transformed once again. Its armor became an identical replica of the Paladin’s own, and a Mana Sword copy appeared in its hands.

“We’ve lost their trust,” the fake Alphonse said, perfectly mimicking his voice before swinging his blade. “Northstar Strike!”

A crux-shaped burst of magic shone beneath the real Paladin’s feet and blasted him.

A Paladin like Alphonse had such a strong Light affinity that the attack inflicted little damage, but the shock was written all over his body language. So great was his surprise that he barely managed to hastily raise his sword when the dark eidolon lunged at him.

“How?!” he wondered upon meeting the enemy with a mix of alarm and disbelief. “No creature of the Dark can use that Technique!”

“The people of Lore don’t believe in us,” the fake Alphonse taunted the real one as their swords clashed. “And how can they, when we don’t even believe in ourselves?”

“Silence, impostor!” Alphonse snapped back before countering with Bladebreaker. The impostor easily dodged, forcing the Paladin to follow through with that Glint Saber Technique he used earlier. “You know nothing!”

“How can we save the world when we can’t even save our friends?” Phul replied after avoiding the attack with contemptuous ease. “May the Lightstone of the ancients smite thee, Starshot!”

The impostor fired a radiant star at Alphonse, forcing the Paladin to deflect it with his sword while Simon could only blink in surprise. Mimicking Alphonse’s Techniques was one thing, but Prayers required either a strong faith connection to a divine patron or Perks. Was Phul capable of mimicking the Paladin Class’ innate abilities?

No, my Heretic Title cancels out the Prayers of lower-level individuals within my aura’s range, so this fake shouldn’t be capable of casting them at all, Simon guessed. This must be an illusion. One capable of inflicting real har—

A sword lunging for his head forced Simon to focus on his own battle.

His mace deflected Alcyone’s blade, but he quickly found himself on the defensive as she followed up her opening strike with a flurry of them. Channeling the chimera eidolon unfortunately demanded as much concentration and miasmic control as summoning its components individually, so Simon was short on spells and unable to throw her back with Chaos Wave. Even his Hellfire Gaze fizzled out due to his unstable mana, and Hector was too busy clashing blades with Mel a few hundred feet away to assist.

Alcyone’s Agility vastly surpassed Simon’s own, so it didn’t take her long to find a flaw in his defense. Her Mana Sword replica struck below Simon’s ribs and drew blood, which she immediately followed with a spell. A massive fist of stone appeared out of nowhere to punch him in the face so hard his helmet cracked.

Heavy Earth damage! Critical hit!

The blow sent him crashing against a nearby ruined house, but Alcyone wouldn’t give him a moment’s respite. She teleported to his side to press her advantage, taunting him all the way. “Seems your Mirror effect has finally run out!”

Argh, he had lost access to Carbuncle’s and Culebre’s individual Auspices when they merged! Worse, his pain and loss of concentration destabilized his summoning and caused Phul to collapse into miasma particles. Alphonse immediately renewed his Haste effect and rushed to reinforce Alcyone.

However, the loss of the dark eidolons meant Simon could finally throw Alcyone off his back with a well-placed Chaos Wave. The surprise telekinetic push threw her back, with Simon immediately following that by attacking Alphonse. “Darkflare!”

A massive blast of darkness swallowed the Paladin, to no avail. Alphonse rushed through it without suffering any harm, which Simon took as a sign that he packed some elemental-immunity gear of his own.

Alcyone immediately supported her ally by throwing an ice-coated knife at Simon’s face. He immediately retaliated with Arrow-Snatcher and caught it in midair. Simon only had the barest amount of practice with the Technique, so he nearly stumbled when twisting around. Still, he managed to complete the gesture and threw the knife back at his own intended target.

Namely, Alphonse.

The Paladin easily deflected the projectile with his sword, but Simon used the opportunity to lunge at him while casting Soul Sacrifice to renew his buffs. His sudden Haste-powered burst of speed took Alphonse by surprise and let him smash his weapon with Bladebreaker. He immediately attempted to follow through with Underworld Hammer and finish Alphonse off when he suddenly vanished out of his mace’s way.

The Paladin and the Adventurer reappeared a few hundred feet away.

I need something capable of casting Anchor. Simon was starting to realize why every high-level opponent he had fought had learned how to inflict that ailment. A teleporting opponent is truly a pain to fight.

It didn’t matter. The reinforcements were finally here.

Swords fell from the sky in a bombardment centered on Alcyone and Alphonse, forcing the two to teleport away to avoid being skewered. Fear spread across their faces the moment they reappeared to see a familiar figure climbing down a stairway of shields.

“Ah, Lady Hyades.” Louis smiled as he landed next to Simon. “Shall we end our long dance?”

Alcyone took one good look at Louis, then disappeared with Alphonse. Mel vanished midswing too, leaving Hector’s axe to strike at an empty spot.

“She always does that. Truly saddening.” Louis sighed in disappointment before checking on Simon. “Are you well, brother?”

“I’m wounded and under an Anti-Heal effect, but I’ll do fine for now.” Simon wondered if he should hit himself with Magic Eraser to remove his ailments, though he decided against it. He had no idea if it would work, and he would rather avoid accidentally killing himself. “What’s the situation?”

“A deadlock, but that plays into our favor.” The ground shook beneath them. “Our foes are out of time.”

The already terrible tremors only increased in violence and ferocity, with cracks spreading across Zephyr and the kish village. Lady Junon’s fossilized roots and manalith veins became visible alongside the miasmic infection spreading through them.

“We should leave, Your Majesty… after opening up the prisoners’ pens,” Hector rasped upon returning to their side. “This place is tearing itself apart… we must fly away.”

“We’re still falling?” Simon’s blood ran cold. “Has Lauriane failed to reroute the Sanctuary?”

“We have already begun to evacuate. I came to pick you up on our way out.” Louis met his brother’s gaze. “It is time to leave, Simon.”

“No!” Besides the fact that the captive kish—including Eole—would likely die in the collapse, Simon couldn’t allow the damage that would result from the following impact. “I refuse this!”

“I’m sorry, Simon, I truly am.” Louis sounded vaguely sincere, though not truly remorseful. “I know you would get more experience if you had ordered and organized this bombardment yourself, but there is nothing more we can do at this point.”

He was wrong. There was something Simon could do, though he wasn’t looking forward to it. He contacted his wife through telepathy. “Anna?”

Her fear and distress were palpable with every thought. “Simon, this is bad, we’ll fall into the sea within—”

“Evacuate. Now.”

Simon broadcasted the order to every individual he could reach, though Anna refused to listen. “Simon, we have to try and save—”

“I can save the Worldtree, but the Sanctuary… the Sanctuary won’t survive.” He might very well end up condemning everyone on it to a fate worse than death. “Leave now, and take as many people as you can with you. This is an order.”

Anna remained silent for a second, her words echoing with the tremors. “You’ll be right behind us, right?”

“Yes, I will.” Simon would live with his crimes. “Leave now.”

“We have to go, Simon.” Louis scowled as a new quake shook the ground beneath them. “It’s over. You can’t do anything to change that.”

“You’re wrong.” Simon gathered his breath. “I can stop this.”

Louis remained quiet for a second, his expression a blank and soulless mask. “Oh.”

Simon barely deflected his sword strike with his Deathmace.

There was no warning, no hesitation, no reluctance. A switch simply flipped in Louis and turned his empty concern into relentless aggression. He attempted to commit fratricide with an unclouded mind.

A Mana Sword replica appeared in his hand and went straight for his heart the same way it had once claimed their father’s life. Simon had never lowered his guard around his brother at any point, so he reacted swiftly and shattered it with Bladebreaker.

However, he immediately recalled Louis’ first and most important lesson the moment he felt his buffs unwind.

Magic Eraser stripped you of all magical effects!

Always pressure the enemy from multiple angles.

The gap in Agility and the loss of Hasten allowed Louis to strike again before Simon could cast Chaos Wave. His Storm of Blades attack summoned dozens of Mana Sword replicas from his Armory, each of them launching themselves at Simon at immense velocity. They struck his limbs in an attempt to nail him to the ground, and though he deflected a few, one tore off his left arm and another skewered his knee.

Hector immediately lunged at Louis from behind with his axe, but more of the projectiles struck the Executioner. The Warrior did not hold back against him and targeted his soul-possessed helmet first, shattering it to pieces.

Hector was doomed.

“I’m truly sorry,” Simon personally apologized to his retainer through telepathy. It was the least he could do, even if it came as cold comfort. “But since you’re already condemned…”

“You should have stayed in the ground the first time, Ser Hector,” Louis said. “My sister would have been better off for i—”

Simon activated Pandemic Bomb and caused the remains of Hector’s soul-helmet to burst open into a swarm of flies.

The attack actually took Louis by surprise, and he instinctively summoned a sphere of shields around the bugs to contain them. This caused a brief reprieve in his onslaught of swords—likely because he couldn’t use the Armory for two things simultaneously—and allowed Simon to follow through with Hellfire Gaze.

Simon wounded Louis for the first time in his hundred lives.

His flames burned his brother’s unarmored face and scorched half of it, leaving the left cheek a festering scar of charred meat. Simon poured all of his miasma in an attempt to finish the job, but his brother’s gauntleted hand grabbed his helmet and then slammed him against the earth. Simon’s vision went white from the shock, and blood poured down his forehead.

“You have gained might to go with your cunning, brother,” Louis said, his voice brimming with a sinister kind of glee. “Alas, our war has made me stronger than I’ve ever been. Stronger than you.”

“You planned this from the start, traitor!” Simon snapped angrily.

“Not quite. I had hoped you would come to your senses and stop clinging to half-measures in a few months’ time, but Lauriane decided to speed up our schedule.” Louis kicked Simon’s Deathmace out of his hand. “This is for the best, brother. I can’t let you save the Worldtree.”

But why? Why would he intentionally risk destroying it and cause a worldwide disaster and ecological collapse almost as bad as the Zodiac Parade?

Unless… unless that had been the goal from the start…

“Why did you kill our father?” Simon asked, doubt gnawing at his heart as he recalled the vision he saw in his brother’s heart at the start of this reign. “The real reason.”

“Why?”

Louis leaned down over Simon, his eyes glimmering with a spark of madness Simon had glimpsed in so many reigns before. His true, savage nature was exposed by the burned half of his face, stripped of House Magnos’ handsome features; a bloodthirsty monster that only pretended to wear the veneer of humanity.

“Because I was set to inherit an empire unworthy of my rule. A rotten carcass of a land infested with leeches and other vermin, which its neglectful creator mistakes for a garden.” Louis sneered at the nearby kish village. “Look at this place, Simon, at this paradise full of parasites incapable of even defending themselves. This planet is drowning in filth unfit to live.”

“Because they can’t fight?” What insanity was that? “The kish deserve to die for, what, not being capable of protecting what they have?”

“Why not? Because some self-proclaimed goddess on her rock decided that all lives were equal? Why should someone who is a burden to the state have as much of a right to live as a provider?” Louis rarely showed emotion, yet each of his words now brimmed with contemptuous scorn. “We humans adapted to exist without needing mana, so why should we abide by an overmighty dryad’s rules? Why should she decide who we reincarnate into?”

Simon’s heartbeat skipped as the full scale of his brother’s madness and ambition became all the clearer. “You want to kill the Mana Goddess.”

“Brimir has spent eons trapped in the mold she set for us, but it doesn’t have to be.” Louis smiled a blissful smirk that would disturb even the likes of Valravn. “Once she’s gone and the vermin who benefited from her rule are purged in the chaos to follow, we’ll be able to create a new world, a pure world. A Brimir where people are free to decide their own paths without being beholden to a patch of grass or false deities.”

“That is a pipe dream!” Simon snarled back, having witnessed for himself the ruins that awaited Brimir without the Worldtree. “Only a handful will survive!”

“How is that a bad thing?” Louis scoffed. “All lives being equal means they are valueless.”

There was no reason to his argument, no humanity nor empathy; only an all-consuming desire to prove his own mad ideology. He would never stop or reconsider. He would never be talked out of his insanity, because there was never a rational explanation at its root.

Louis Magnos only wanted to prove a point.

Simon called upon Anna’s Devil Brand in an attempt to contact her and found her telepathy muted. This meant she had already evacuated past the barrier. Good.

He might have hesitated otherwise. “You’ve taught me… a valuable lesson, Louis.”

“Have I?”

“Yes.” Simon’s bloody hand reached for a fossilized root. “We Magnoses talk too much.”

Ser Richard earned his escape, and Lady Junon moved into his cell.

The old knight materialized next to Simon, his face frozen in silent terror and weeping despair. This was a mere preview of the horror to come when the Sanctuary’s sky turned red with hellfire. Its barrier grew teeth, closing in on the Sanctuary with ravenous hunger and malice.

Louis’ eyes widened in alarm. “What is this?”

“I’m casting the Sanctuary’s dryad… into a pocket dimension… and this place along with it.” Simon wasn’t sure if the people caught on its surface would suffer the same fate, but at this point, this would still be a meager price to pay compared to the apocalypse. “No more crash—”

Louis impaled him through the chest in an attempt to cancel out his magic, but Simon Magnos was too scornful a man to die.

Moreover, the Abyss’ hunger would not be sated with this blood sacrifice alone. The demiplane of torment continued to drag Junon and all of her extensions into itself until it tore up the very ground beneath them.

“Even my death… won’t stop the process…” Simon broke into a dark, bitter laughter fueled by hatred and the rush of experience. Condemning an innocent dryad—a friend—and likely everyone left in the Sanctuary to eternal torment gave the Overlord Class much pleasure. “You… lose!”

Simon wasn’t sure if his brother would die with him when time reset, but if some part of him did endure in the hellish demiplane… then Louis Magnos deserved it more than anyone else.

“Why?! Don’t tell me you’re under the delusion our foes will be grateful if we spare them, brother?!” For the first time since Simon had met him, Louis Magnos’ face twisted in anger. “Who are you even trying to save?!”

Simon glared at his brother as Zephyr was cast into Hell’s jaws. “Myself!”

Simon Magnos might not be a good person anymore, but he would never be a monster.

Good god your amazing

Kip

Burnt by Louis once again. Maybe he’ll learn this time

Hive Tyrant

How could Simon betray Louis like that….

CentaureHeart

Louis going into the ever growing list of people that need to die as soon as Simon starts a Reign.

Akirish

Not bad end for a reign, he hurt Louis and didn't die to a Mana sword this time.

mhaj58

At least we’ll be at the reigns end tomorrow

Lindwurm227

I must say the crown of torment has been one of the most versatile things in Simon's kit

Thetacron

Why is Louis so awesome?

blib

"I need something capable of casting Anchor. Simon was starting to realize why every high-level opponent he had fought had learned how to inflict that ailment. A teleporting opponent is truly a pain to fight." YOU JUST UNLOCKED THE FOG THAT DOES THIS EXACT THING THIS REIGN?! AND THEY OWN SANCTUARY VIA CONQUEST SO THE ONE POSSIBLE EXCUSE DOESN'T FLY SINCE IT'S RECOGNIZED AS ENDYMION TERRITORY! COVER THE BATTLE IN FOG AND THEY CAN'T EVEN NAVIGATE, LET ALONE TELEPORT IN OR OUT, AS YOU CAN ONLY TELPORT OVER IT!

Spartanstoryteller

Simon is genuinely my favorite anti hero anti villain character it’s been super fun watching him struggle with his morality and the ways he views the world

Bilbo

Louis "Rules of Nature" Magos

Cindermoth

Man, Louis really is his Balzam's son, he surpasses even zodiac fiends in madness

Jasus

I am sorry for Lady June but Louis does have it coming.

bob

Eh Louis still the best magnos.

JAMAJ

Fuck lol

Andrew Lechner

I hope the other Crowns end up being just as useful as Nodens'.

Jasus

Not even that. He purposely makes it hellish. There’s nothing natural about deliberately causing the destruction of their world.

Szoppa

I wonder what the Five Sovereigns, or Djinn and Shura can be combined into?

Jasus

I hope it holds. A pure evil Simon is boring.

Bilbo

Also Phul is one Eidolon goon sesh

BrandyLeeT

Sorry Louis but the Mana Goddess is dead...

Pradian

Phul is such a beautiful eidolon. Glorious.

Flufflez

Good thing Simon stopped the bombardment. Now, he can 1v1 the Worldtree and hog all the xp later.

Juliano Wic

Incredible. Save yourself first, then others. That's wisdom.

Leo S.S.

I think Simon is still deluding himself a little, but I’m happy he’s taken the first step to actually attempt to stop his moral decline.

Black Rose

Lol next reign he has to kill like one zodiac fiend it's been so long

Tate Browder

Not being able to cast at all w two eidolons up is brutal it might be worse than having one bc then Simon can still use his strengths

Leedie

Ohhh, Simon settinv up lines he refuses to cross, a valueable lesson indeed! Great reign, let's never repeat it again

Agoramon

He came to his senses, lesssgoooo

NeonEvergreen

Good to see Louis having to use talk no jutsu. He has never been on the backseat for once

alejandrox

Thanks for the chapter!!! It seems to be over...

Alchem

Wow, Phul, the Vainglorious, has to be the coolest eidolon we’ve seen so far. Love the combination of the two leading to be a masterful actor, combining the mirror and musical/arts qualities. Can’t wait to see him again and for Simon and him to have the opportunity to talk, see what his personality is like vs Carbuncle and Culebre, and what other eidolon combinations Simon can make

Szoppa

I'm curious what the results will be of fusions with the Five Sovereigns, or Shura and Djinn. Besides, the fact that his illusions can actually hurt is a huge boost – he can summon illusions of armies of soldiers or beasts, and they will actually hurt the enemy. He can use prayers even as an Overlord – a lot of possibilities.

Nightmare Lore

Huh. Syncretic, not Synthetic. What's the difference? And I was somewhat right, it is a new Aspice. Although one that's slightly similar to Carbuncle's mirror. I'll still say illusion is sperate enough for my argument. Still, I wonder if in order to merge the Dark Eidolons in question have to be similar to combine at all or any two Dark Eidolons can merge. Delusional Space though. That makes Simon's Phantasmal Curse a lot more threatening now within his Dungeon and Frightwall.

Nightmare Lore

Dying to a Mana Sword duplicate technically.

Antony444

At least Simon truly saw the madness of his siblings, both Lauriane and Louis. Seriously, when even by the standards of an Overlord you go too far, well...Hell is paved with good intentions, but it seems the Magnos children of the War Party dug far deeper than this already abysmal threshold...

Nightmare Lore

Pain. Nodens was the Fear of Pain and so is his Crown. And the Crown of Sin would be more versatile for every situation if we killed more Zodiac Fiends! They're just waiting for us!

Nightmare Lore

I'm still under the impression they give an active and a passive for each Crown.

Nightmare Lore

I believe the merge still counts as two Dark Eidolons. Simon's not gonna be able to merge all 5. Pairs would work though.

Nightmare Lore

She wouldn't have been able to make the Mana Sword or float to the Moons if she was dead. She's just incapacitated somehow.

Daedalus

He’s also just an idiot, insisting that only creatures capable of fighting and defending themselves are worthy of living, and apparently not realizing in the slightest that a world of obligate carnivores will starve in a matter of days. Every warrior is an entire *society* of people who support them. He’s an amateur pretending to be a genius because he knows tactics, a noble born idiot who seems to think that soldiers don’t need to eat, and has never given a single thought to the logistics necessary to wage war.

Algor

amazing reign, the dynamic of last chapters was something to look forward to

blib

(PURE OPINION BELOW) Norbelle should have figured out fusion in a later reign after she reverse engineered the dark eidolon transformation. It should NOT have been discovered because 2 Eidolons got beat up and fell upon each other like South Park gay pile. There was already plenty of action and new elements so the addition of new mechanics (when the old ones aren't even accounted for half the time) were unnecessary. Furthermore the fusion was completely underwhelming and got stomped by Alphonse and cost Simon his fight versus Alcyone. It's a great idea, but it's not the right place or time for it. Too late now, but I have to add criticism because everyone else is too busy focused on the Heel-Turn.

Nightmare Lore

They weren't prayers, they were illusions. If he wanted prayers as the Overlord he'd need the Cleric Crestone.

Felix H.

"I do not need to win, as long as I can make sure you loose."

Daedalus

He possesses the full awesomeness of an idiot for whom a sword through the brain might improve his intelligence, convinced that a fighter can subsist on battle, an amateur who thinks tactics are the full extent of war, and who has never spared a single thought for swords beyond making sure he doesn’t grab the pointy end. He’s the kind of idiot that’s impossible to argue with, and thereby cannot be refuted, because there exists not a single point which has any bearing in reality and can only be grasped by someone of such intellectual magnitude as to be negative.

Raphael Freudenschuss

To be fair, each crown is basicaly the miasmic equivalent to two noble classes.

EZ NOONB

Louis Is lowkey based

Licht666

Syncretic Eidolons...Just imagine how powerful and Eidolon can be formed by merging the Dark Miasma Versions of all the 5 Sovereigns together.

Raphael Freudenschuss

Well, since its syncretic the fusion proces should be all about belief and since the dark eidolons are recorded in the abyss the only persons belief they technicaly require is Simon/the overlord. What triggerd the transformation right now is anyones gues though.

Nightmare Lore

Only. Two. May. Be. Summoned. At. A. Time. Just because two merged into one, doesn't mean 5 Eidolons can be summoned all at once. Or a merged Eidolon and a third Summoned.

Kath

Void, I have an idea and I hope you find al least interesting. I, of course don't expect it to lead anywhere, but I think a tier X spell that could be interesting is one that inflicts all suffered damage, including emotional and mental, caused by a target onto them. I find this opens the possibility of Simon casting it in reverse to gain some trust and maybe eventually cursing the Overlord with a permanent version on all of their victims to effectively neuter the class. I think it offers a good goal for him since from when he makes it to when he has devised a sufficient way to empower it enough it has a lot of uses (including making the oracle feel what they have/plan to do). Anyway, I had to do something with the idea, I hope you liked it (if you read this).

JJ

More battle script for Simon. It’s okay. The dude forgot that he can Ninjitsu too when he threw the Ice Dagger at Alphonse. Could’ve taken him by surprise and one shot him.

Pinpenny the great lithian

As sick as the closing line, Simon has already committed indiscriminate murder of the civilian population of a hostile country. I think by most metrics, he'd already be considered a monster.

Alibhai

It wasn't really good at it probably because he never really needed to use it.

Alibhai

I just assumed she is the system. She is in no singular place she is everywhere

Observer Whimsy

I love Simon finally taking action to save his own soul. I’ve been unhappy with how passive he’s been lately at his own transformation into a monster, and this denial of that future is gratifying as heck

Bilbo

Nah he doesn't personally know them so that's fine

George R

Hype Chapter great ending

A Reader

It looks like the merged eidolon counts as only one eidolon. Theoretically you could merge all five sovereigns together if you can merge a syncretic eidolon with a regular eidolon. This depends on the assumption that a syncretic eidolon can consist of more than two eidolons at a time

gostsamo

A random theory - it was mentioned that the overlord class is a curse and it has a condition to end. Is the condition the willing surrender of the class in the last life?

NotaQMaalt

Let’s repeat it again. I’m still convinced that with enough tries, he can resolve his issues on going full world war. Just make sure to squeeze Louis for all he’s worth before arranging an unfortunate “accident”

Logrus

Ah Louis, curse your inevitable and well telegraphed betrayal!

Mark Roudabush

I'm not a Monster! And I'll condemn an innocent to eternal torture to prove it!!

00Resu

We didn’t see much of the fusion, but it wasn’t stomped by Alphonse. Alphonse was caught off guard and being pushed back by it. Simon was struggling with the debuffs and lost control over his summon. I agree that the fusion is a great idea. It makes the Five Sovereigns reign more appealing, even if most of it is spent collecting lower tier spirits. This specific fusion seems to excel at dealing with (or at least distracting) a singular target through realistic illusions and psychological attacks.

ConstanTeen

Agree with you, felt too random and undeserved.

Stilico

It is really way too powerful ofba tool. It should have some size limit or a stat check based on charisma or intelligence whether it works for someone. It is a very boring plot devicr to have a 1 hit KO tool like this for mighty dryads and literally anyone else

Stilico

Sorry but the crown is absolutely broken and makes the powerscailing aburd. He killed the weakest zodiac and now it grants him the ability to basically de facto kill anyone who he touches? And there is no size limitation?? And no stat check like w Brand of Pride??? Simon could kill every single character so easily w this which is incredibly boring.

Nategator

As expected, the War Party path was fire. Big sis is a yandere. Big bro Louis isn't just genocidal; he is omnicidal. Killing everyone is a feature, not a bug.

Nategator

I think she is demonically possessed. It works on people with crestones, so why not the Mana Goddess herself? I think Simon, in figuring out how to free himself of his Overlord "possession" (he's a natural Paladin combined to the Overlord class), will figure out how to "free" the Mana Goddess - presumably with Bel being the key.

David Giles

What Daedalus said. Louis's braver better world dies in the resulting famine the next year.

Nick Pincus

Curse this sudden but inevitable betrayal

Szoppa

Yes, I know, they were illusions, but still, illusions of prayers. Seeing as illusions can hurt, if he summons this Eidolon, he can use prayers in the form of illusions.

00Resu

While he was the weakest Zodiac, he was still very dangerous compared to the strongest, more “human” opponents. Simon’s first attempt at going toe-to-toe with said Zodiac Fiend ended with most of his army dead and his “elite” squad almost wiped out. Future attempts on other Zodiac Fiends will likely require even greater sacrifices. The crown itself requires physical touch & can only hold 1 person. I think it’s a fitting limitation for what it offers.

Roden

I disagree with Daedalus here. A few chapters ago Louis said Simon would have been a good farmer in another life and seemed to respect that. Louis respects farmers. In this chapter Louis said PROVIDERS should survive. In my opinion Louis isn’t trying to get rid of people who can’t fight but people who aren’t highly capable like beggers and with no obvious deficiencies like the Elves’ dependence on mana

LuciferLilac

And Louis Magnos' full fascist ideology becomes clear. He's kind of a weird but believable mix of anarcho-primitivist accelerationist, and ecocide fascist? Say it with me, folks: All Fascists Must Die. :)

LuciferLilac

Or we could *not* let an unrepentant fascist off the chain for kicks?

Vik M.

I hope he succeeds. The world needs a savior that is of both the Dark and the Light and is not governed by either.

Vik M.

Well. Except for the Zodiac Fiends who want to destroy the world.

Haven

At least he will get a title for it, maybe “The Betrayer”

LuciferLilac

I mean, that's a highly hypothetical assumption Roden. Just because the dude *says* he respects farmers, does that *actually* mean he'd give them support, keep them safe, listen to their advice, make sure they've got the tools and resources they need- or will they always be low down his totem pole compared to his Survivalist-Warrior Waifus? Louis is literally ending the thing sustaining life for most of the planet rn, with no fucks given to e.g. how much arable land will be left afterwards. I see no evidence that in *practice* he'll submit his Randian ideology to basic necessity.

Vik M.

@Roden I agree with you in that it's about "providers", not "warriors". The question becomes where he draws the line. Where do chefs land on it? What about musicians and other artists?

Vik M.

Just as daddy dearest wanted.

Finteh_can

I’m sure he won’t be able to use it against certain people. There’ll be something that stops him from spamming it and even if not there’s still limitations

A Zen

@Stilico We've been shown that sufficently Agile opponents can just avoid being banished and sufficiently powerful entities (like Zodiac demons) can literally boom their way out of the channelled maw, forcing it to close empty It's not omnipotent and it's not an instant 1 hit KO

A Zen

Well Void did say that Simon's yet to explore the breadth of his arsenal fully. Truly shows when he's prepared (that sick technique combo) and when he's not

MysticMancer

I can’t believe the Oracle would make Simon betray Louis like that!

Exarion

I thought we were already at a consensus that Louis is irredeemably evil? I'm still waiting for the Reign where Simon actually kills Louis, and Laurianne along with him.

Daedalus

Louis also says that anyone who can’t defend themselves deserves death, pointing to the peaceful and communal society of the Sanctuary as the ultimate example of what he despises. The Sanctuary has basically nothing *but* direct providers of goods or necessities, due to their lacking administrative class, and he hates them for it.

David Giles

With how Crestones work, it's impossible to be a good farmer and capable of defending yourself from those with a martial Crestone.

Federico Bellavista

How much more betrayal can Louis take?! Ps. If you know, you know.

eeee

On the one hand, I want Simon to hold onto his morality. On the other hand, I'd love to see one reign where he goes full evil to fuel his XP growth.

Haven

Ok Norelle

WizardClassic

I wonder how Simon will keep Louis under control in future reigns? Maybe letting Louis marry his fiance will calm him down, Balzam had to have delayed it for a legit reason. Bringing Hector back to life would work for Lauriane since she feels it's her fault. We also never saw her deepest wish in Carbuncle, only part of Louis', and didn't see any of the other siblings either.

Bryn

Thanks for the chapter!

Karim Saadi

At least he burned him back

Pradian

You mean the crown Helel was immune to? The one that Valraven negated by pushing Simon away? The one that needs Simon to touch the target? Lol?

Pradian

Watching that girl use Kawarimi aroused Simon’s envy. He had tried to replicate the Technique soon after the reign began and failed. Kawarimi’s knowledge had been engraved in the Ninja Crestone itself, and while he could feel a vague phantom memory of it imbuing his flesh, he hadn’t mastered it enough to replicate it after losing the Ninja Class. He hoped to correct that failing during this reign. ???

Hurz

Nah I don't think that there isn't an way to utilize his mania and talent. Balzam wouldn't have allowed him to become like this in his final reign otherwise.

Hurz

Didn't they need an consume perk though? Crafter and rogue seem to be far more important.

Nightmare Lore

Only the one slot. Like I've said, It's 12 Perks in one. Otherwise I'd have said fuck that and tried for the Technique Perk combo I've brought up. We'd have had space too, if we replaced Crown of Sin with Perfect Shapeshifting and Dark Eidolon with Monk's Body Techniques.

Nightmare Lore

Hey wait a second. Alphonse managed to get away! We were so close to using him for another Level! Bah! I can only hope Louis somehow dies next chapter since he's fatten us on Lvls from the war.

Frizzo

Personal Development! ✅️ Plot Twist! ✅️ W-O-W arc options of dark merges to explore! ✅️ Louis's Ambitions in the light! ✅️ What an amazing read! Thank you Void! Now my question is can he summon Phul directly in a new reign? And if so does that break reality and causality more or less than usual! Looking forward to finding out!

Nightmare Lore

It listed the Aspice as Aspices. Meaning two. I don't have faith in merged Eidolons counting as one.

NeonEvergreen

Perks that unlock a whole host of abilities like adaptive spell casting and armsmaster are definitely the more superior pick since they are infinitely more superior picks.

Pradian

But he has already married her this reign? Simon did conclude that a betrothal is easier to break and to prevent Louis from accumulating too much power.

WizardClassic

Simon gave them permission to get married, if they actually did I can't remember. Regardless Louis spent more time on campaign than with his fiance.

Juliano Wic

Just thinking about it. Where was Norbelelle in all this chaos. She was dwfinetly nearby. Maybe even close enough to observe Simon's death, which was a concern much earlier. I thought author was downplaying her presence, so maybe this will get brought up much later.

Pradian

????? Wtf? The High Confessor had refused to marry Louis and Isabelle due to his personal distaste for the Marshal’s blasphemous ways, however, so Simon had the Keeper serve in his stead.

WizardClassic

That did jog my memory. I guess I forgot because Euphemia took the spotlight with how unhappy she was in her marriage. But Louis still spent more time at war than with his wife, although when they were all on vacation Simon noticed that his sister in law had something on her mind. Sadly we never got any specifics.

Lorenzo Rossi

Louis confirmed as one of my favorite characters here. Man is so mad he just makes sense 🤣

Darius Rochemore

Phul can make for an incredible training partner

Skitterdidnothingwrong

Hopefully we see him reverse course now that he’s committed a few atrocities

JJ

Ah. Thanks for this. I forgot

Nightmare Lore

It'd have been an interesting different Simon if he'd specialized in Techniques instead of Spellcasting. But would you say Dracolith, Crafter, and Librarian count as the better option? Also you repeated "superior picks".

Simeon Dobromirov

I FUCKING love Louis, he is literally the best character

Stilico

00Resu I see what you wrote but this does not adress my concerns. Being able to hold one person is a very minor limitation. You know what would have been a reasonable limitation - a size limit! I have no idea what you meant by saying that the fight was hard, ofc it was hard. the relative statement is still that it was one of the 3-4 weakest zodiac who gave him a 1 shot "kill" on almost every character minus like 10 characters and that is absolutely too strong
