Previous Chapter

A/N: heya, as warned some time ago, I'll be on a break next week due to a family vacation so next chapter will be on Monday August 31st ;) see you again then!

The Sanctuary shattered into pieces, and Simon fell through the cracks.

Every bit of Lady Junon’s roots across the archipelago was sucked into his torture demiplane and carried huge chunks of land with it. The paradise Simon had once sacrificed so much to protect unraveled into ruins and debris.

Simon saw Ser Richard crushed by boulders during the collapse alongside many innocents who couldn’t escape their cages in time. Their wails echoed louder than the quakes, and their blood was on Simon’s hands.

Countless souls perished in the disaster, yet this atrocity barely earned him a new level.

Level 79 Overlord Perk: Devil Forgemaster VI (Passive): You can now craft Grimoires, Skillbooks, enchanted scrolls, and tattoos, but they must include miasma as part of their creation.

Grimoires? Skillbooks? Were those related to Libromancy?

Simon’s thoughts faded away as he fell alongside a thousand other corpses and debris into the screaming sky. Louis wasn’t among them. Simon didn’t think his brother had perished—he would have gotten more than one level if he did—but he wasn’t sure he had escaped either.

If the Light and Dark were merciful, then he would suffer the same fate as the dryad he helped enslave.

Simon fell past the crumbling barrier and into clouds, his vision blurry from his wounds and blood loss. Too many Mana Sword replicas were still embedded in his body for him to recover, since they suppressed his healing and teleportation. He would likely perish before he even hit the ground below.

“I’m sorry, Anna,” Simon whispered through telepathy. I’m sorry, Eole. This… is all my fault.

He had doomed them all the moment he allied with a madman.

Nobody answered, likely because the dozens of Mana Sword replicas impaling his body interfered with his Devil Brands. The world suddenly opened into a vast blue sky above a vast ocean. Simon spotted so many spots over the horizon—airships, birds, Norbelle’s eidolons—alongside the rain of debris falling in his wake. They were so far away he doubted any had seen him.

His gaze lingered on a great shape far away in the distance. He mistook it for a lofty mountain at first, only to realize otherwise when he saw the great lush branches reaching for the very reaches of dark space itself.

The Worldtree was as beautiful a sight as it was haunting.

It was such a strange thing; a colossal mass of roots and bark coiling around a massive trunk, casting an entire continent in its shadow. The tree’s crown vaguely resembled a brain formed out of spiraling branches and pulsating twigs arranged in a pattern too complex for Simon’s mind to make much sense of. Its glowing leaves reached so high, beyond the clouds and into the farthest reaches of Brimir’s atmosphere. The Worldtree was something primeval and eldritch, the very crucible and template of life. Mana shrouded the island growing out of its roots in a colorful mist so thick Simon could only see the outline of vast emerald forests and spires.

Many layers of protection surrounded this forbidden land, from many rune-carved coral reefs shining with power to overlaid magical barriers encircling the Worldtree. Many flying shapes also circled its skies to defend the place against anyone seeking to destroy it. Not a single speck of miasma would befoul this paradise’s beauty.

Such was his first glimpse of Illusea; a walled garden of grandiose proportions. It reminded him of the Sanctuary, albeit somehow even more mystical.

The sight of the Worldtree alone was enough to briefly soothe Simon’s anger and melancholy. Though it might have been pointless in the end, he had preserved a true wonder and life itself from annihilation.

Simon’s eye suddenly caught movement closer to his location and spotted something in the distance: a flickering, pillar-like shape that seemed to float above the water itself.

Is that… Simon’s eyes widened in disbelief as he recognized the glimmering shape. The Crafter’s Towe—

His life ended in a final white flash.

—----------

Simon was alive one second, and dead the next.

The sharp, phantom pain in his forehead left little doubt as to what killed him. He had been shot for the third time that reign, and the final assassination attempt had succeeded. Quite ironic that Louis had failed to kill him this time, despite everything.

The Crafter’s Tower should have been half a world away. How could it show up so far from Muse? Was it always able to fly, or had its master modified it to do so in the months that followed the war’s beginning?

Many questions remained on Simon’s mind when he found himself facing the Crimson Throne’s judgment again. He could feel his predecessors’ relish at the slaughter he unleashed, their mocking laughter at his actions, and a hint of disappointment from his attempt to pull back at the last minute.

In the end, he had bathed the world in war and done more harm than good. Saving the Worldtree had been too little, too late.

This is the Twenty-Eighth of your Hundred Reigns.

You have earned the title of Simon the Warlord.

The Warlord: You’ve shed much blood already, but the carnage will never be enough. You are Hastened for five minutes every time you kill someone with a weapon. Every new victim will renew the duration.

“Is that your way of encouraging me to keep hurting people?” Simon asked into the void in anger and distaste. “I will never become one of you.”

The Crimson Throne answered him with silent laughter.

He woke up again in his bedroom feeling drained, empty, and with an aftertaste of bitterness in his mouth. His predecessors were convinced their curse would wear him down into a monster like them in the end; that it was just a matter of time.

And they might well be right.

Simon was barely through a fourth of his many lives, and he had already changed so much. Would he be the kind of person capable of saving the world fifty reigns from now? Would he even care enough to try? Or would the Overlord Class condition him to revel in pointless cruelty?

I can’t become like my father, but the Overlord won’t let me level-up unless I commit monstrous acts. Simon looked at his hands. Condemning an entire civilization to eternal torture barely let me move from level 78 to 79.

What else would it take to bring him to level 80 and beyond? What price would he need to pay to reach the heights of power he needed to defeat the Zodiac Fiends? The number of foes he could guiltlessly slay was dwindling, and he couldn’t just dissociate himself mentally from ever-escalating atrocities.

Worse, Simon would never rest easy on the Crimson Throne so long as Louis lived. The madman might bide his time for a few months, but only to feed on conflict for the sake of growing stronger. He would never stop aiming to destroy the Worldtree unless branded or dead.

Simon couldn’t take him down right now. Euphemia believed they would take casualties when they discussed his elimination a few reigns back, and though Simon had grown stronger since, her warning still rang true. Many would die, and allying with either party at court led to disaster down the line.

Even if he found a way to deal with Louis, would it be for the best? Leading Endymion required him to deal with so many moving parts that he could find little time to research personal projects or further his strengths. He always ended up pursuing too many targets at once and making little progress on each front.

Simon had sworn once that he would become the strongest being on Brimir and put Louis in his place. What happened at the Sanctuary only hardened his resolve to fulfill that vow.

One day.

I’m not ready yet. Simon had already reached that conclusion earlier in the last reign, and his last battle only hammered that point home. I must master what I already have before I can truly rule.

There was still so much he needed to learn about eidolons, Techniques, crafting, spellcraft, and so much more. He should dedicate a reign to mastering each of them until he could use his existing abilities to their fullest.

This would give him time to think and ponder how to deal with the Overlord Class’ influence over his mind. Simon had to figure out a way to retain his humanity now while he still cared enough to try and do good.

He had already fallen too far down the slippery slope as it was.

—-------

Simon spent the first two hours of his reign doing something utterly new: writing down and visualizing all the paths available to him.

He first eliminated those he lacked the strength and resources to fully tackle yet. Breaking into Gargauth’s Chest of Worlds topped the list at the moment. Although Simon was confident he could now defeat Vouivre at the beginning of his reigns, the pocket dimension's defenses had badly wounded her even after she harnessed the Beast Crestone’s immense power. Simon didn’t think he could defeat her himself in that state, and hence decided to wait a bit until he tackled a Dungeon capable of threatening her life. He also excluded ruling in the open as Overlord for now.

In spite of eliminating these options, so many of them had opened up that he didn’t know where to start. He could go eidolon hunting, track down the Five Sovereigns, and investigate what happened to Culebre and Carbuncle; he could go to Fablan to learn and practice new Techniques with the Monk or other local masters; he could return to Cocagne to ask Remedia to teach him magic, visit Rhapta to recover the Archer crystal, work with Justine Eligos and other experts on awakening his Remembrances… the number of options was dizzying.

Moreover, he had a Devour Crestone slot to fill. Fast Travel didn’t interest Simon that much since he was potentially one level away from casting Tier VIII teleportation spells anyway, but he knew how to obtain multiple useful Crestones like the Rogue, the Bard, the Beast, and the Monk. Only the Crafter remained out of his grasp for now, besides the utterly unobtainable Oracle and Librarian.

Should he focus on filling that slot, or strengthening his basics? Simon was still pondering this question by the time his sister barged into his bedroom.

“Simon, you are already awake?” Lauriane strode forward like she did so many times without asking for permission. She had always been welcome in this room. “Good. We don’t have much time.”

Simon stared at his sister a moment, a rush of conflicting emotions overwhelming him. He couldn’t erase the fresh memories of her plot to destroy the Worldtree out of his mind so easily. He would have trusted Lauriane with his life once, but she hadn’t hesitated to lie to him and silence his imps when she realized he wouldn’t approve of her actions.

Lauriane frowned at him with sincere concern. “Simon, is there something wrong?”

“Nothing,” Simon replied. He only had to take a look at her expression of relief to forgive everything. “Nothing at all.”

His sister ultimately loved him unconditionally. She was the only one who truly cared about Simon among their house of vipers, and it was Balzam Magnos’ fault for turning that quality into a vice through his heartless manipulations.

Simon didn’t have the heart to condemn Lauriane for something he was guilty of himself. He too had reacted with extreme violence when it came to protecting his loved ones. He had no moral high ground from which to condemn her.

However, he would have to live with the knowledge that his beloved sister was willing to deceive him for what she perceived as his own good. It left a bittersweet taste in his mouth.

Simon decided to buy some time by naming Laurent Linconnu as the heir in the revised will, reliving events he had already experienced many times. Standing near Louis had somehow become even more unsettling. The more he observed his brother, the clearer it became that he had mistaken detachment for self-control. That man hid his all-consuming madness and cruelty behind an airtight mask of sanity.

Louis Magnos truly was his father’s son.

Is he your creation too? Did you twist him like you did Lauriane, Thalas, Norbelle, and the rest of us? Simon wouldn’t put anything past Balzam Magnos anymore. His touch had rotted their family to its roots. Louis was truly your masterpiece, Father.

Rabid dogs had to be put down or chained, and it now fell on Simon to bring him to heel.

That would take some time and preparation, so he visited Shabram’s office as soon as everyone dispersed to chase after every Laurent Linconnu in the realm.

“Here are our files on Prince Louis, his fiancé Isabelle Barbatos, and every person of interest associated with them,” Shabram told Simon upon handing him a pile of Imperial Intelligence documents. “Must I take it as a sign we will move against the War Party?”

“Eventually.” Simon would destroy Louis physically, mentally, and socially. He would turn his allies against him, break his arrogant pride, and then either kill or enslave him. “I need greater strength before I can move against my brother.”

“Your Majesty has many avenues to achieve this goal,” Shabram replied. “Your father cultivated many alliances. Any viceroy would be more than happy to mentor the new Overlord.”

“True… hand over their files to me too.” Perhaps it would give Simon inspiration on what to do with this reign. “Shabram?”

“Yes, Your Majesty?”

“You betrayed Navarre and committed heinous crimes in our empire’s name.” Simon took a sharp breath. “Do you feel any remorse for what you have done?”

Shabram was one of the few people who had yet to betray or deceive him. Even Belzemine, Eole, and Anna had all turned against him in one reign or another depending on the circumstances. He trusted her advice and insight.

Shabram considered his question before giving a small nod. “I do feel some regrets over what I have done to protect my clan and House.”

“How do you… How do you deal with the guilt?”

“I stay in touch with my friends and I visit my enemies’ graves, to remind myself of why I did what I did and the cost I had to pay to survive.”

“You visit your enemies’ graves?” Simon frowned in slight surprise. He didn’t take Shabram for that kind of person. “Can you elaborate?”

“Saving my clan required the sacrifice of people I once called friends and allies.” Shabram looked a little nostalgic for a moment, though it didn’t last. “They were not so different from me in the end. Visiting their graves reminds me I could have easily ended up buried in the sand too, had I made a mistake or chosen differently. It gives me… perspective, I suppose.”

Simon pondered her words for a moment. Much like Lauriane, he had to admit he only cared about his loved ones or people he knew. He probably would not have felt any remorse for what happened at the Sanctuary had he not personally met its people and lived among them, and he certainly hadn’t thought twice about ravaging Valne and Muse.

It was so much easier to kill strangers than friends.

Shabram might be onto something. Visiting the places Simon had destroyed might give him perspective and renew his empathy for others.

“May I ask why Your Majesty is asking me this?” Shabram inquired. “I know many dances capable of easing the mind and soul, should you desire it.”

“No, I don’t want it to get any easier.” Simon changed the subject. “What do you know about Muse? I recall that its Crafter only interacts with the wider republic through their constructs and apprentices, yet I know for a fact both the Cobweb and the Adventurer were able to contract them.”

“Contracting the Crafter is not such a hard task. They regularly take private commissions through approved intermediaries.”

Like giant mechanical Champions? Simon wondered if the Crafter was simply too busy working on those war machines to bother with social interactions. Still, there’s something shady about this situation...

Alcyone had been unusually tight-lipped about the Crafter when they discussed them in previous reigns, when she otherwise couldn’t keep a secret to save her life. She wouldn’t be so guarded if they were a mere introverted old man.

Simon had considered approaching her to use as an intermediary to approach the Crafter, but besides the fact that he wasn’t in a hurry to face her so soon after they tried to kill each other, he wasn’t sure bringing himself to her attention would be the right move. He needed anonymity to train and practice in peace without his myriad of enemies potentially tracking him down or putting two and two together.

Thankfully, Shabram offered an alternative solution. “If Your Majesty would like to approach the Crafter, I would suggest attending Muse’s Planetary Exposition.”

“The Planetary Exposition?” The term sounded familiar to Simon. He recalled reading about it in his bookworm years before the reigns. “Isn’t that a science fair?”

“Yes, it is the foremost scientific gathering of the so-called free world,” Shabram confirmed. “Tinkers, artificers, and wondermakers of all sorts gather there to show off their inventions. We strongly suspect that the Crafter uses the event to identify potential apprentices.”

Interesting. Simon wondered if he could infiltrate the exposition with his own crafting skills. “And where will it be held this year?”

“The Musan port of Lampwick, Your Majesty.”

“I… I see.” Simon stared back at the files, mustered his courage, and then nodded to himself. “Then I suppose I’ll have to buy a ticket.”

—----------

Since Imperial Intelligence had plotted to infiltrate Muse for years, Shabram easily conjured up a cover identity out of thin air and paperwork.

Simon Magnos would become Simon Belias, an Endymian refugee of Magvolian descent fleeing oppression in his native country for his royalist opinions and emigrating to Muse in search of a better life. A sadly common tale nowadays.

He took a few other measures to ensure he could still guide the empire in his absence, first by branding both Shabram and Belzemine, then teaching the latter how to use Overlord Call. His plan was to install a Dungeon in Muse and then create a teleportation bridge between the two nations so he could operate in both at his leisure.

“You wish to sabotage the War Party by feeding Her Grace incriminating evidence?” Shabram asked with a slight frown.

“Subtly.” Simon had learned to his chagrin that Louis never fully trusted Shabram and wouldn’t hesitate to eliminate her, so he didn’t want to endanger her. “You will approach Euphemia with information about the elven conspiracy and share your suspicions that Louis murdered his father with a weapon he received from them, which he keeps stocked in his Armory.”

“This will guarantee a civil war down the line.”

“Yes, but it will start on Euphemia’s terms, and the truth will sow division in the War Party.” Lauriane and Dassein would both think twice about supporting their father’s killer, especially one who allied with the Illusean foe beyond the sea. “I need to destroy Louis’ powerbase in preparation for his physical elimination, while destroying other undesirable elements like the Cobweb before they can become threats to us.”

Shabram’s frown deepened. “I will follow Your Majesty’s plans, but wouldn’t it be easier if you simply assumed the throne? You clearly have enough power to ally with a party at court and secure your inheritance.”

“I don’t want to ally with them, Shabram.” He had already made that mistake twice. “I want to subsume them. We will simply prioritize taking out Louis first.”

“I see…” Shabram stroked her chin with renewed enthusiasm. “Your Majesty intends to weaken the factions at court, let them alienate our citizens with their feuds, and then return as the empire’s savior. The people will beg you to restore order.”

“Yes…” Simon hadn’t considered that course of action, but it might actually be a good solution to the civil war: bleed both factions dry and then return as a peacemaker. “Yes, something like that.”

Simon gave Shabram all the intel she required to follow his plan—including orders to deal with Casval before he could threaten Anna at the Academy—then settled his other affairs. Meeting Eole again after what happened last reign was… a bit difficult… but he had grown sadly used to it by now. The words he uttered were the same he had fed her so many times before about visions of disaster should she stay in Telluria, before advising her to return to the Sanctuary for both her own safety and warn her people about Nodens’ eventual breakout. This should convince Alcyone to focus on helping them rather than interfere with the incoming civil war. They were all better off without Endymion ever learning of the floating archipelago’s existence.

At least Eole granted him a feather of friendship again before she flew home, which warmed his heart a bit.

Afterwards, he briefly visited the Honorius family in Telluria to brand them and teach Duchar Overlord Call, then secretly boarded a merchant ship to Muse with fake papers and other documents. He informed no one in his family about his destination. It saddened him to leave Lauriane and Anna in the dark, but he had ensured their safety and he wasn’t ready to confront them for now.

Repeating the same role over and over again wore on his nerves.

The trip would take weeks, which Simon used to study Shabram’s files in order to better familiarize himself with Muse’s geography, history, and political system. The youngest nation on Brimir, the republic was a thriving economic power and a vibrant democracy where every citizen could vote for representatives. These representatives gathered in one of two chambers—the other being formed of a motley of local stakeholders like merchants, judges, and old families—that then selected the head of government, who worked in conjunction with the Crafter to lead the nation to prosperity.

The regime vaguely resembled Valne and Cocagne while seeming far more egalitarian, in that merchant-princes and powerful families actually had to share power with the common people. The head of government being an elected official with a limited mandate was also an interesting innovation, though Simon wondered how they could get anything done when their leaders changed every seven years.

Overall, the journey was rather peaceful… up until the seventh day, when a fog rose out of nowhere on an otherwise calm sea. The ship stopped dead in its tracks, and the captain summoned every passenger onto the deck with his whistle. Dozens upon dozens of refugees, sailors, and merchants gathered there in a rising chorus.

“What’s happening?!” Simon heard passengers complain to the crew. “Why did we stop?!”

The captain, a grizzled sailor with more years than white hair, let out a heavy sigh. “Toll collection.”

It only took Simon a glance at the fog to realize it was suffused with miasma. By the time the shadowy outline of a rotten black ship appeared out of the mist to intercept them, he had already guessed whom he had to blame for this mess.

“Yes, yes, dear travelers, I’m afraid this is a robbery.” Amadeus Voltobauta politely saluted his victims from his pirate ship’s deck like the gentleman he was, then pointed his Musan musket at them. “Now, would you kindly part ways with your worldly valuables, or with your lives?”

No! His grandparents are disappointed :(

Steampunk tiiiiimeeeee (My bet is the Crafter is a magitech AI and/or a brain in a jar situation)

Enjoy your break Voidy

Will

Enjoy your break Void! Also Voltobauta has no idea which ship he is trying to rob.

Nightmare Lore

Well as far as Lightbringer is concerned, nothing is getting close to his Dreadful Radiance.

Simon has many options he can try to get strong enough to save Brimir without becoming evil incarnate. One, he can train. Learning more spells, learning more techniques, improving his crafting, figuring out his Dark Visionary abilities, learning more battle-scripts, exploring the perks he already has, bettering his action-economy, and more can make him more powerful without any leveling. Dark Visionary progress can limit reputation damages and limit suffering. With his current skill, Simon makes Eidolans experience befoulment when he summons their Dark variants due to causality shenanigans. If he gets more adept, maybe, just maybe, he could summon Dark Eidolans without making Carbuncle suffer. Also, good'ol learning of many subjects will probably help Simon change the Overlord class from the evil that it is to something that's at least neutral. Two, he can target acceptable foes. Hunting monsters, slaying the wicked, binding Eidolans, and the like can get him levels without being evil. It is probably ethical to treat most dragons, demons, and Lysandra's high-level war criminal buddies as exp-turkeys. Also, more Eidolans would increase Simon's options. Three, if Simon exhausts all non-evil power-growth options and is still not strong enough to save Brimir and avoid getting screwed over by the Oracle, he can balance his evil deeds with good ones. If evil acts make Simon more evil, then good acts could make Simon more good. If he spends a reign commiting atrocities for levels, he should spend the next reign doing an equivalent amount of good or more (for people other than Belzemine or that he already knows). He can train in the meantime and learn stuff, so good deeds wouldn't even compromise the growth of his power. Best case scenario, Simon can balance his evil and good deeds so that they cancel eachother out and end with Simon as a decent guy. Another possible case is that he becomes someone who does great good but doesn't flinch at great evil, kinda like Walter Tye from NDT. This honestly isn't the worst outcome. Tye was violent and committed atrocities without remorse, but he genuinely wanted to help people and succeeded in doing so. If becoming like Walter is what it takes to save Brimir from the Zodiac Fiends and the reigns, it's probably worth it.

Lindwurm227

tftc and have a nice break

Andrew Lechner

Right, the Necromancer is a pirate... He's usually too busy dealing with Simon, the Cobweb, or working with the Adventurer to actually do his job when he shows up in-story, but now we get see him having fun with his hobby. I wonder if Simon will give up his gold to keep his cover. He's probably able to beat Voltobauta in a 1 v. 1 now, and the Overlord in him would absolutely hate being robbed, cover be damned.

Misatek

Hope you have a great vacation, Void!

Bilbo

Why does Simon keep talking about Chest of Worlds like something he is forced to do solo? Just using power of empire when doing Endymion Reign to crack the chest as a side project sounds like the easiest way to do this. As for Muse, I have to wonder how is this going to work when majority of Simon's crafts explicitly require miasma. I mean he can just be a demon crafter as a cover but it is a bit too high profile I feel.

Pradian

We will see you in 10days... Argh this is gonna hurt.

Szoppa

Could we see what Crestone Necromancer has to offer?

Vertasky

Silence is mentioned twice in immune status effects in end of reign stats, also blind is both in immune and resist, otherwise glorious chapter as always, enjoy the vacation

Lady Merlin

Tftc! Since we have an extended break, I figured this comment would be the start of a Predictions thread - where folks can post their (wildest?) theories as to what will happen next. Who knows, mayhaps one with the Oracle Crestone may be among us? :)

Lady Merlin

My wild swing is that the Crafter is physically very frail (even perhaps a child? Inheriting the Crestine from the previous one or just a childlike mentality) - their vulnerability a reason Alcyone didn't talk about them to Simon. Someone who could be stolen from easily, but that would lead to a bad end for them. I don't feel this is quite right, but thought the Crafter being a little kid would make for an interesting revelation.

Antony444

Yes, I suppose it was inevitable there was going to be a pirate robbery sooner or later...didn't expect it would come now, I must admit.

NeonEvergreen

He can probably assassinate Voltobouta easily just to get his hands on the necromancer crestone. Voltobouta was on his backfoot when Simon was on his level 60s. His vulnerability to light abilities which Simon is very aware of coupled with a silent sunbeam to the back of his head should do him in.

Randoudo

Probably? I remember feeling pity for Volto as every attack he had got countered by Simon Immunities😂.

NeonEvergreen

Very sound possibility. Maybe a predoom manufacturing AI trying to fix itself. Borchs class seems like a cyperbunk or AI inspired precursor civilisation.

Nightmare Lore

That's due to Titles and Unyielding Essence. He's immune/resistant to them twice.

George R

Have a great break really cool start

alejandrox

Thanks for the chapter! Enjoy your vacation!

Flufflez

Simon can probably keep everything that's actually important in his inventory and let Volto take a minor amount of stuff. Keeping his cover may actually fit the Overlord's deceitful aspect well. Or, Simon can put on a holy lightshow, which may make it easier to get the Crafter's notice.

Bunny Waffles

Probably because the only people he could take into the Chest of Worlds to crack that delicious nut would have to be stupidly strong or able to survive the absolute pinnacle of traps and defensive measures dreamt up by dragon Overlord who was so possessive of HIS STUFF that it was basically madness. About the only people that fit the bill are also the kind of people who might/probably would take the opportunity to pilfer whatever horrible and powerful shit is in the Chest and turn it on Simon.

Logrus

prediction - The Crafter is just the Crestone itself, having become self-aware and created a robot body for itself. Consuming it will have some serious consequences... Maybe there will be a situation such that Crafter figures out (to some degree) what is going on, and allows himself to be consumed by Simon.

Oreo

My bet is that the cursed sniper is a woman

Hubris

My bet that Crafter is the whole tower - a giant sentient construct making other golems and stuff.

Jasus

I am not sure it has been established that the church faction was a bad ally. The problem was that Helel was released and that they unknowingly serve a demon. He can prevent Helels escape so it should be managable. In contrast to Louis with whom it will always come to conflict he can corule with the church.

Arnoud

Im betting you its a chick - airhead genuis archetype

Hubris

I wonder if double immunity would actually be useful and will beat some immunity piercing attack some day.

Jasus

Soooooo, when will he release the people in the tourture realm?

Nightmare Lore

I think people have mentioned that Void said certain Beasts could bypass immunity to certain things but I never confirmed that myself.

Hubris

How did I not think of that? Alcyone was keeping quite about this because she knew Simon would try to wife her.

M

Don’t you get bored reading a story where the protagonist is a good two shoes, I find the story so much more interesting when Simon does evil things, the inner conflict is much more entertaining

D.F.

Does anyone know if the sniper is a vassal class or a hybrid one? Is it even a class or is the sniper just some person with a gun.

Vertasky

Aight, cheers, hmmm wonder if that will come in play, unlikely but who knows

Alibhai

So you thinking the torture realm exists through the resets? First of all that would be horrifying because I am assuming Simon will go months before having to use that ability again. And 2 we will have our first reliable way to carry things across the regins.

ConstanTeen

My bet is that the crafter was isekai'ed from Earth.

Alibhai

I think the main problem with the church route is that even an appearance of peace spooks the Oracle into launching a preemptive attack. I'm assuming it's because of some prior event in which Mardok gained her trust and then betrayed them.

J Burns

Ooooh I like this, not mutually exclusive with my ideas too

Mark Roudabush

Simon needs to start leveling Vassal classes for stats and to eventually cash in in for Noble Class levels. Just pick a new one each reign that's in line with whatever he's up to.

J Burns

Entrapta expy incommminnng

Alibhai

My opinion is that the wielder of the crafter crestone is not human or a living thing at all. I think the tower itself is the wielder. They were probably a creation of the previous crafter who then went on to inherit the class. The tower also probably has teleportation abilities and itself is the Musan sniper.

Expital

Belzemine never betrayed Simon . If it is one of the starting reigns where she was controlled by Vouivre , you can't call it betrayal .

Nightmare Lore

I wish to strangle you for this suggestion. Then again, I always feel that whenever this comes up. Vassals are inferior in every way and in order to benefit in any way for Noble Crestones the Nobles have to have a higher level then their Vassals! Otherwise it's just wasted effort for less stats. If you leveled a Berserker Vassal to 100, congratulations! You now will forever be a weaker Berserker then anyone who started with the Noble because you can't exchange stats like you can Exp. And for Simon it wouldn't even matter that he unlocks the Perks because they Don't Travel Back With Him!

Nightmare Lore

It didn't carry over the Imp from Lux Vult so no.

Jasus

If you know the attack is comming, just plan a counter ambush. Easy way to defeat a lot of enemies. If the Oracle wages war even after a peace offer Muse and Valne will probably not go to war. So it would still be beneficial.

tentacles4all

I think the Overlord Class is different than what originally was intended. The class is what the people think an evil Overlord is. The more I see the class kit , the more I think he is ment to level up by creating dungeons for heroes to try to conquer. He needs to be the rock against which the other classes will level so that they have a hope against the parade and the crazy elves.

blib

Entirely unrelated to the story, but what are the best and worst deeds performed by readers IRL? The most surreal? Most people paint themselves heroes of their own imagination absent any real evidence. (I could never post this on a non-anon account for obvious reasons.) My strangest affair was hooking up with a co-worker that cheated on her last boyfriend by fucking his Aunt. She wasn't the best looking girl (6.5/10 or 7/10 at best), but she was by far the most devaint. She also took it far too personally when I made a joke about Thanksgiving; or how lucky for me my Aunts lived out of state. The most "moral" thing I'd ever done was let a homeless 18 year old kid (near total stranger I'd only spoken to x1 before) live with me for free. Later on I'd learn his mother evicted him on his birthday. She said both his suicide attempt and reports of being molested by her ex-boyfriend as a minor were mere attention seeking stunts. She was human trash fit only for domestic abuse or human lab testing IMHO. All my other positive examples remain basic social contract items: changing an old woman's flat tire for her, giving rides for coworkers to daycare, holding doors, giving a couple bucks to street people, etc... Nothing exactly at risk of breaching the pearly gates. The worst things I've ever done all involved operating as a heroin/cocaine connect paired with petty theft from my family during my days as a junkie. The evilest shit I've run into, but was unrelated to me directly, was either: my ex-gf whose own brother set her up to be raped in exchange for money (years before I met her) and ended up with an absolute psychosis regarding facial coverings/masks as a result (Halloween was a real treat), or my friend's girlfriend who was whored out by her own mother at 13. I also knew an "old head" convicted murderer who swore a corpse was entombed in a local bridge under construction. During a Friday they'd tossed the human remains into a void section of foundation/pylon and covered it in quick drying cement. On Monday the construction crews resumed labor none the wiser. The saddest thing was a kid on my wrestling team who hung himself. His father found him while he was still alive (and managed to get him down from the noose) but the drop that failed to break his neck succeeded in crushing his larynx. He died in his father's arms waiting for the ambulance. The blood pooling and oxygen deprivation of a non-fracture hanging is hideous to look at. I can't imagine finding your own son in such a state.

I'm interested in Simon's journey. I like the creative hero moments and the epic villain moments. Since he wants to be good, I suggested some means to that end. There's still gonna be struggle that sucks for him but is fun for us. Also, I'm not sure if the Overlord class is connected to the Worldsoul and thus subject to the changing perceptions of people on Brimir. Since the Overlord class cuts Simon off from the Worldsoul, is of the Abyss, and is all about tyranny, I doubt collective opinion changes it. However, I think each Overlord has some influence on the class, as seen with DC slot choices and class outfit changes. This may be part of how Simon makes the Overlord not evil... eventually.

WizardClassic

The Workshop of Wonders reign unlocks the Painted Door as an option. There was a painted door in The Underland series. My theory is the Crafter is from another world maybe even a Derro.

Alibhai

Yeah she is not someone that has enough agency to "betray" somebody.

Alibhai

@ Nightmare Lore wasn't it implied previously that the conversion isn't one to one? The amount of XP a person needs for a level in the vassal classes is lower than that for the noble ones so when you transfer levels it is adjusted accordingly. So will he lose stats still? Probably. But there are so many vessel classes that stats on their own are not really an issue he can level up any of them.

Chesser

ngl with belzemine, euphemia, thalas and now lauriane it feels like simon's gotta spend a reign learning to be a therapist just to undo all the damage his father/predecessors have done

granndfunk

Oh, will this reign be a buddy comedy with Volto? That would be great. Also, the Honorius family is just the best. All 3 are GOATs. That's why I want him to end up with Cassandra. He fits in with that family the best.

Darius Rochemore

how i would love for simon to just jump to the other ship, put his overlord armor and run towards voltobauta just to spook the spooky pirate ( it would be a hilarious start to a very short reign ). something else to think about, can other people read simon's chronicles ?

Aglovale Sempai

Made that mistake twice of allying with a party? I feel like the Church Party Reign wasn't that bad, only bump was the Helel ticking time bomb which only explodes if Anna gets kidnapped(again)

Bilbo

that's literally not true, with exception of Louis every other Endymion hard hitter is pretty reliable. I hate when people are just saying stuff to be saying stuff, so annoying

Haven

A break? Nooooooo!!

Bryn

Thanks for the chapter!

Hey Void Herald , I was wondering why Simon doesn’t get on of those spells that makes duplicates of yourself to make his life easier? You know do more. A few of his enemies have that so why wouldn’t Simon think of doing that too? On a different why doesn’t he help Hector by like changing his helmet of possession to a crown of possession or the like to a branded human like minion which would mean Hector could polymorph to a body that his sister Laurianne could like hug and continue his relationship with?

Doofenshmirtz

I mean not really? Louis is a no. Laurianne is absolutely loyal to Louis and, if not steal, would tattle immediately which probably isn't optimal. Dassein is a maybe since he's under Louis' wing too. Euphemia is far better but requires the whole reign to actually get her to like him, but she can maybe be trusted to maintain the peace through the whole chest raid. Thalas and Duchar are too weak. Ironically the little psychopath might be the most trustworthy one there outside of Maublanc and Belzemine. Norbelle would keep a secret like that just for the shits and giggles. Of course, who is trustworthy changes with each reign, but we're kind of assuming we're dedicating a whole reign to this and nothing more, so are thus starting with the blank slate right after Simon wakes up and won't be wasting too much time trying to build relationships with anyone. Alcyone still remains the best option. Isn't fully under the Oracle's wing and is open to keeping secrets from her, relatively fast to convince, and has a class perfectly made for raiding stuff like this.

Bilbo

Why would it need to be kept secret?? You just neutralize Louis as you will be doing anyway if you are doing Endymion reign and then everyone else is perfectly happy to just not steal shit for no reason since they have no trouble putting up a common front versus elves. The party of Simon, Euphemia, Maublanc, Belzamine and Dassein should have decent time clearing it with little to no room for betrayal and requires no setup outside of what you'd be doing for Endymion reign anyway. At worst some people might die inside or some items might threaten current reign, but Simon is already ready to just rawdog Chest of Worlds which is worse than doing it with Empire's resources. You don't even need a separate Reign for it, you can do it during standard Empire run as part of Vouivre pacification campaign. This is besides the point of "lmao Simon might get betrayed" being utterly asinine because a) we are intimately familiar with these people and they are pretty loyal with exception of Louis, who is still very easy to predict, he just happens to have a conflicting goal and b) you don't actually care if reign goes to shit because reigns go to shit all the time and as long as you can replicate access to Chest in future then it was a worthwhile reign.

Nightmare Lore

Only one class for each Series of archetype. Every level gain for a class with the same Noble prevents Simon from gaining anything until he reaches a new level in that Series. Example: Gladiator is a Vassal of the Berserker, so it's within the Berserker's Series of Crestone. If you reach Lvl 3 in it, from that point on no Crestone - even its Noble - will give you it's stats until Lvl 4. So by Lvling a Vassal you'll have gained less stats then you could've gotten from its Noble.

Darius Rochemore

wait there's also agra..... we don't talk about the 4th one

Darius Rochemore

which duplicate are you talking about specifically ?

Darius Rochemore

i think in there is a high chance for simon to take the librarian crestone next reign IF he prepares accordingly . 1) take the crafter crestone this reign and use it to replicate the anti magic field ( stock them in the inventory so that elios does not notice ) 2) proclaim yourself overlord on the next reign and ask Louis for help and give him the real blade . 3) prevent teleportation with the fog 3) summon carbuncle for magic reflect 4 ) stack the buffs and prevent debuffs ( lovestruck and healer around anna to be sure+ brands + soul sacrifice etc ) . what do you guys think ?

Darius Rochemore

the supposition is that if the blade can disrupt the overlord itself it can definitely kill a lich

Sickul

Dunno if it's possible, but going to Sanctuary right away and allying with Alcyone to raid the Chest of Worlds would be fun. Maybe even a Alcyone romance route (probably not)? Do we know anyone with a Rogue subclass? Maybe Simon could start the reign taking down cobweb and then giving the Rogue Crestone to an ally, powerleveling them to help us raid the Chest?

Bilbo

Since we've got a week, lets consider tactics for dealing with Musan Sniper. Overall, there are four main things Simon could do. 1) Control the range of the Sniper While couple hundred miles is a lot, it is also not that much on strategic scale of intercontinental war. As long as Sniper is not in range of Simon, Sniper can't hurt Simon. Now we saw that the tower can either move, or there are multiple towers, or tower can grow. With that in mind Simon should setup imp(or magic branded birds) surveillance on the tower so he can know where it goes. While Muse should have little issue dealing with imps, they are ultimately cheap and plentiful so they should do well keeping tabs on the tower itself. With enough practice Simon might even manipulate tower into going the wrong way; given that Alcyone didn't teleport Sniper around I have to assume that Sniper is tower-bound for whatever reason(i.e. that's where railgun is at). In the end Sniper's biggest advantage is surprise, so even if we are in range, as long as Simon know about him or her, their power is much reduced. 2) Obscure Sniper's vision It goes without saying, but precision strikes are ass without precision. Simon already has his divination immunity perk so just adding some physical obstruction might stop Sniper from sniping. Miasmic mist spell that conjures bunch of miasmic mist around Simon to make long range vision worthless is both very easy for Simon to do at his level, and intrinsic properties of miasma should also counter whatever enhanced senses Sniper uses to supplement standard vision. I expect this to be very simple and effective, if a bit boring, solution for Sniper. Note that you could switch things around and use Sniper's advanced vision to launch mental attacks. This is especially potent with The Devious; Sniper looks at Simon's third eye, gets mental attacked and the misses without understanding what's going on. 3) Point defenses As always the real weakness of projectiles is that while they have great deal of speed and penetration, they are weak to getting destroyed themselves. The specific counters might require some development - for example ring that casts Miasma form when bullet is inbound to phase through it, Contingency laser or dispel to destroy the bullet, Amulet of Bullet Protection to draw bullet to itself and trade with it etc. This is likely the most practical long term solution, just craft a suit of armor that tanks ranged projectiles and call it a day 4) Just tank it lol Realistically Simon was tanking Sniper shots much better than anyone here expected. With that in mind, the best solution might be to just get swole enough so you don't need to care about Sniper at all. Have counter for its anti-regen effects ready, have additional defenses over your third eye since Sniper aims there all the time, just plain get more durability, partially bind most of your soul to your body so brain damage is not as relevant etc. Do keep in mind that Sniper has or is Crafter, so they are also likely to keep improving and using more deadly weapons, so in the end having some kind of trump card defense beyond whats known is also needed.

NeonEvergreen

Maybe the Crestone itself built the tower to act on as a physical intermediary or suit. Like the core of a computer/AI

Ser_Slothicus

Woke up today excited for a new chapter… remembered Voidy is taking his well earned break

Baged

My guess is that he's a gnome

Raphael Freudenschuss

Wont work since louis isnt actualy high enough lvl at the begining to resist the insta kill.

RedZingyHedgehog

They aren't necessarily a bad ally but Simon has to make some compromises in order to work with them which he doesn't really want to do.

Darius Rochemore

are you sure ? i always thought that louis was close to lvl 100 at the start of the reign and we know that the insta death of elios applies at lvl 80 or below... did i miss something ? plus i dont think it will affect him anyway since the anti magic crafter thingy would probably deny it too, i think

Walter westwood

I was thinking the verney split into like 2 equal Simons ( don’t make good and evil Simon 😵‍💫) and I think the fairies had a spell that did that like many chapters back if my memory serves me right ( though I forget what I had for breakfast at times 🤣)

Michael

Honestly, I don't get why Simon consumes the first level perk of a class. I'd like him to level one class to 100, like the custom one Lauraine made him, and see if the capstone perk would overshadow every other perk, like the Crown of Pain does to the rest. Finding himself with the Monk also sounds great, its unfortunate that his Father set up the timing to be right before the Parade. I think he's eventually going to have to let the comet pass while holed up in a separate dimension(Exodeus'?) and live/work on his life post Comet. A year is a harsh limit.

Stilico

I think you should add to the sentence "he could return to Cocagne to ask Remedia to teach him magic" that he thinks he should do this after waiting a level so he can cast lvl 8 spells at lvl 80. It really would be a waste to go to Remedia before that

Stilico

taking the crafter to the Chest of Worlds might actually be the best strategy as the crafter might be able to disable the defenses fairly easily

Stilico

nightmare lore, the stat benefit is objective benefit regardless of if the class itself is useless. Secondly, I dont see what yo uare trying to say with your example. The reason to level vassals is that by spending reign 1. on vassal and then reign 2. on noble (with transfered XP) he can gain more xp into that class if he only spent one reign on this noble crestone.
