Oof... yeah, this is the episode when you find out what Game of Thrones really is.

There's a great plot twist related to this episode in the books that's unfortunately not in the TV show. Also any chance of shrinking the main screen so that the faces aren't covering it up?

QuibblesAndGitz

To answer Alicia's question about the opening, the instrumental song is the same for every season including the spinoff prequel HOTD, but the locations change each opening to show you which areas will be important this episode as well as give some perspective of distance and where everyone is in relation to each other

"When you play the game of thrones, you either live or die; there is no middle ground." - Cersei Lannister, Season 1 Episode 7

as others have said the music is the same, but the intro changes every episode and focuses on locations that will show up in the episode. if you are ever confused about locations in the show and dont want to google a map out of fear of spoilers, the intro works very well.

And this right here is how you subvert expectations properly, as opposed to so many stories where the writers seem to do it purely for the sake of doing it. Since everything leading up to the moment is consistent both in characterization and narrative, it feels very natural both in the moment and in hindsight rather than feeling like the result of a bunch of character/story contrivances that only happened to trick the audience. The story is doing something the audience didn't expect, but it never feels like it's doing it solely BECAUSE the writer thinks the audience won't expect it. It's a classic example of good twists versus bad twists. A good twist will make you look back at the story again and be impressed with all the subtle, well-placed hints and clues pointing towards the reveal. A bad twist will make you look back at the story and still leave you wondering where the hell it came from.

A fact I love about Maester Aemon is that this man is VERY likely the oldest man in Westros ahead of the Late Lord Walder Frey, who is said to be 'almost ninety years old', compared to Maester Aemon who is confirmed to be 102.

Gebbo

Stuff. I still remember first reading it how it absolutely shattered my expectations. That moment was the shift from "good guys vs bad guys fairytale" to "omg this shit is the realest story I've ever read"

Laura Crandall

Rikon the youngest Stark kid is in the first episode you just missed it. And they talk about him in the second episode.

booger

the intro changes every episode

Mr. Ewok

Fun fact about the final scene, Ned's moment of seeing Arya and shouting "Baelor, BAELOR!" at the nights watch guy, was Martin's favorite addition in season one since it showed Ned commiting one final honorable act before the end.

Gentleman Cho
