“Premalu which we have not seen” KORBIN HATES YOU RICK HE WATCHED IT WITHOUT YOU.

It’s not that the dad was ok. They were in a public place and it was as much about appearances as finally being resigned to it . Plus they were dependent on her income from Ireland to sustain. So her financial independence played a major card . Nivin’s character is every elder brother and beloved member of society . Totally relatable to Indians

Rems

And Nivin reluctantly lets her go at first because he truly understands there’s a chance her mom may attempt suicide and he didn’t want it on either one’s conscience .

Indian family is the final boss of strategy games

Yes! The scene in the car.. (where y’all were talking about how open minded Indrani’s family is… ) when Nivin asks his brother to drive and his brother says don’t go into that dark space again.. I know you are scared to be there again this is not the same thing.. please don’t cry ( I am paraphrasing) This scene communicates the reason why he is scared to fight for her.. coz there is a strong chance he will lose..

Just too much distractions in this watchalong. Korbin has adhd, I don’t know what Rick’s excuse is!

ILY guys, for watching it right on Day 1. I watched it in the theatre and then had a chance to go again, but I skipped it, thinking it would be more fun to watch with you guys. I’m glad you both enjoyed it, even though the movie caters to Mallu audience.

Andy

You have seen her in premalu! Which you Korbin have seen! Perhaps re watch with Rick.

OMG. Dont talk over when the movie is running or pause it and speak .And then they were pissed that people were talking in the theatre. How is it different? They missed so many funny moments. :( They missed the mysore pak scene which as my favourite in the movie..

MayaR

They also missed the important car scene that had the connections Rick was looking for in his review… he was talking over it looking at Korbin for most of it.. sigh

I actually came back here to OSR after a long time specifically for this film. I loved it. It somehow revived by love for Indian cinema. I watched it in a full packed theatre in Warsaw with Indian audience around and it was one of the most enjoyable theatre experience in a long time. Fun. Didn't know any actor, director's previous works. Aa western person with experience of Indian cinema I could't get at first what was truly problematic for this relationship. Not age-gap, status or religion in this case, but as I understand burdening a child with expectations to improve the family life. Not sure if Ashley was determined enough to decide for herself to go with Justin. Too confused, needed more time from toxic family. And I like how Justin character was written with much vulnerability under matter of fact exterior.

Mamitha Baiju is a wonderful actress. After Bethlehem Kudumba Unit I watched her in Premalu and Vishvanath and Sons. Talented, charming and full of expressions

I haven't heard about Nivin Pauly before this film. I liked him here but didn't know how to asses him as an actor. Watched then Premam and Sarvam Maya, rewatched BKU and yes, I do like him :-)

Finally finished watching the watchalong. The second half was really good , I think you guys really got absorbed into the movie after the interval. Great watchalong.. and you are bang on, it is specifically written for malayali audience and many of my non-mallu friends didnt like it but some did. So it is a hit or miss .

Amaan Shah

could you please react to Action hero biju starring Nivin Pauly..

ANIL KRISHNAN R

Why judging characters before trying to understand them.

Finally got around to watching the watchalong. When Korbin said Malayalees will know people like this - yeah they're called mom and dad 😅

Ashley being outspoken and daring is because of her young age. She hasn't suffered a loss in love yet whereas Justin already knows what it feels like to lose the one you love due to circumstances beyond our control. Hence, he is extra cautious once the relationship begins. He is also the quintessential eldest son - constantly calculating the best way forward with least amount of damage for everyone involved. There is also a contrast between Ashley and Sayoojya - the former was torn between loyalty to her family and her love for Justin whereas the latter was always clear that Joel is her priority. If Ashley wasn’t confused, she would have told Justin clearly (before going to Ireland) that she wants to leave her family and be with him, that she doesn’t care about the repercussions. Instead, she said she is helpless and was asking HIM to make the decision for her, which is why he said decisions taken in haste can lead to regret. Ashley being younger to him may make people question her autonomy in the pairing. That’s why it’s important for HER to dictate the course of this relationship. By the time she returns to India, she is confident, clear about her priorities, and impervious to her mother’s machinations. Culturally (at least in the old days but lesser now), in this part of the world, love unfolded slowly, carefully, with a lot of patience and poise. Liking someone romantically was considered a profound, unalterable decision, and people rarely if ever acted in haste in such matters. They did not date just to test their romantic compatibility. Loving someone meant you are loyal to them, whether you are dating them or not. It’s a very vintage kind of love that this movie portrays which doesn’t exist anymore.
