As someone who was, at one time, an ABD Religious Lit scholar, this conversation was fascinating. it's very rare to hear from an *evangelical* Protestant Christian artist like this. Mainline Protestantism has a decent representation still, in the various arts (see Marilynne Robinson, First Reformed, etc), Orthodox Christianity has a robust literary tradition and still pops up, here and there (as in Indika), and Catholics are everywhere, but there's just very little extant Evangelical Art at all (or even exvangelical), I've found, beyond the realm of chick tracts and their equivalents in various mediums. The connections drawn between intentionality, community, and human dignity with his religion are also interesting; I think that Evangelical Art as a concept is tricky in large part because you don't really have an aesthetic or a significant theology to build the work on, the way you might in any other branch of Christianity, so this more practical/ ethical dimension is a really useful way into the whole thing. Anyway. Big picture note: I've really appreciated the *scope* of Post Games; it's wonderful to find an outlet that will tackle Christianity in Art alongside episode on Erotic Art, postcolonialism, other kinds of Philosophies of Art, and so forth, while still being very very accessible.

Chris, you're killing me, dude. I just sat down and fired up Runescape Dragonwilds to listen to this to. I feel attacked 10 seconds in 😂

oh, something else that came to mind, that might be of interest--the whole Getting Isekaid By Getting Hit By A Truck thing *predates* Isekai manga/ anime. It's already a trope in early Western Portal Fantasy; not only do the Pevensies get sent to Narnia the last time by dying in a train crash, but in the Thomas Covenant series, the title character gets to his own fantasy land originally by being hit by a car. You could even argue that there's an antecedent to Lewis in the Wizard of Oz (the movie, not the book), with Dorothy's near death experience sending her to dream-Oz. It's also tough to nail down exactly where Faerie Stories end and Isekai/Portal Fantasies begin, but if you treat them all as one big category, since the former does treat the realm of Fay, often, as a land of the dead, you could argue that we've been treating Getting Hit By A Truck [or some other period-appropriate equivalent] as a gateway to an Otherworld for as long as humans have been telling stories about fantastical realms.

This episode is super strong. What an amazing discussion. Of course, I was listening while doing some yard work and then the discussion made me start thinking about how these ideas intersect with trying to get my college first year students to understand effort is what it is all about...

This was an all-timer. I hope you have Xalavier on again in the future.

Very, very cool ep, Chris. Couldn’t stop thinking about Jenny Odell’s book _How to Do Nothing_ while listening to your conversation about attention. For her, so much of attention is rooted in a sense of place and presence, and whether or not you belong where you are. Which makes Xalavier’s discussion about immersion even more interesting. The idea that escalating stimulation is the cost of increasing immersion feels so hostile to my sense of attention’s relationship to presence. What would games that help cultivate your own attention rather than capture and keep it look like?

Fantastic discussion and another great episode, first and foremost! But I've never yelled "Fuck!" so loud while doing the dishes when at the tail end of the episode you started talking about Love and Deepspace. I'm a player and we have been going THROUGH IT. Most of us just wanted our dog boyfriend to complete our six pack harem, but noooo, we got developers harassed, content that could be gone forever, minors being weaponized to carry out the anti campaigns, bots bots bots, and Chinese government scrutiny. Exhausting 😭
