Jesus. In both content and locale, that beats the worst pick up line I have unfortunately received. ("How old are you?" while I was shelving children's DVDs). Truly baffling behavior

Complete side note but The Dark Fantastic is a superb book and Dr. Thomas is wonderful

This was a delightful read in a nauseating wide eyed sort of way. good work. Was he by any chance christian? Because this is EXACTLY the type of insane shit that youth group leaders do bc they think they will both “minister” to you and get a girlfriend. I have never had this exact scenario, but I have known so many men (and women) who mistake awkward honesty for emotional connection and think that whatever scrap of uncomfortableness they may feel is literal Satan discouraging them from saving your soul. or maybe he’s secular batshit, who knows.

I am perhaps incredibly naive, hopelessly clueless, or overly generous, but for some reason my initial interpretation of your tumblr post was that he was assuming you needed friends and asking to get coffee to offer support 🤦🏻‍♀️ rationally, if I were to witness this exchange in the setting where it happened (because holy shit it’s so bad…) I think I would recognize it for the batshit ask it was. Or maybe it was just me making a ridiculous assumption about the tone of the ask. But something about reading it didn’t quite sink in how extremely awful it was, and how likely it was he was just trying to hit on you. Holy shit. All that said, that was a hysterical write up of a beyond absurd and RUDE situation, and I appreciate you elaborating for those of us at home to get a laugh out of it. You do a good job of turning your suffering into other people’s joy! (thinking of your OUAT watch recaps or romance novel reading series, of course)

oooooh my god that's such a good question. this is 100% speculation but he DID have that kind of like... Boy Who Plays Acoustic Guitar At Church vibe. so maybe!

oooh that one IS vile though. I had a man use the exact same line on me when I was shelving at the library, but at least it wasn't the children's section. that has to count for something

thank you, I've always been proud of my ability to turn the most horseshit nonsense that happens to me into a good bit :)

I'm not gonna pretend I wouldn't say something Deeply Awkward in this situation (not helped by the best thing to say is 95% likely, NOTHING), but that is.... a fascinating pair of sentances to put together. "you seemed like you were always struggling" is not great but not horrific imho considering the context, but best kept to yourself. "wanna get coffee?" weird place for this piece, but not the worst place I've been asked out (the bar is through the molten core of the earth, here). together? in that place? in that time? entirely localized in a therapist waiting room? Sir? SIR? tragic, horrific, truly heinous.

Makenzie M.

YEAH it's really the combination that puts it over the line. either one alone is bad, but taken together? RUN.
