My second-half-of-2025 reading challenge is mildly inspired by your Romance Novel Escapades: there’s a series of BDSM novels I enjoyed as a teenager with no other access to porn, and I’m going back and reading all like twenty of them in order (including several I have not read before). The results are Mixed but very funny.

Oh my god how is this the first time I'm hearing about Bob the Drag Queen's debut novel??? Immediately added to my reading list, I am in love with bonkers premises like that

Seems I've mostly been re-reading books this year, including The Right Thing To Do At the Time, which is one of the first M/F romance novels I read and one of the few I've ever liked in a quest to diversify my reading by checking out the romance scene at large. (No real insult to most of the M/F romance I've read, I just like my M/F strongly GNC and that doesn't really exist in mainstream media much at all.) I don't know how much my opinion is worth considering I'm not the audience for romance much, but I think doing a genderbent Pride and Prejudice is interesting, the depiction of the trans man protagonist is pretty great, the strong queer (philosophically speaking*) themes are right up my alley, even if they could have maybe been explore a bit more, and it still has one of the best first chapters I've ever seen, ever? *There's queerness but it is an M/F romance novel - I say philosophically speaking because the themes are related to queer philosophy in the same way Is Love the Answer? is about Aromantic/Asexual philosophy in addition to being a coming-out/realization story.

Im literally in the middle of Rebecca right now!! It's been on my TBR for years and was then bumped up when someone recommended it for people who liked the presmie of but hated the execution of Verity by Colleen Hoover (why I've read multiple of her books is a mystery to me myself and probably some form of masochism) and so far, it's everything Verity was trying to be and more. I'm enjoying it more than I was actually expecting to which is very high praise since I went into it with fairly high expectations.

Your Utopia was soooo good to me, one of my favorite reads so far this year. it actually got me on a bit of a short story collection kick, which lead me to one of my other recent favorites (Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan— lots of odd and (often) off-putting queer women navigating weird nature, fucked up circumstances, and fraught relationships).

oooh Fruiting Bodies has been on my to-read for like two years ever since a friend recommended it! noted!
