The 9th floor of this hotel is a bit chaotic. Mistaken identities, accidental poisonings, a political assassination plot, and LOVE! Brilliant episode!

Grab your cuppa and enjoy!

Cheers, mates!

I love this episode it's very different. They used a style of poetry called Iambic pentameter for the episode.

Dryfesands

Iambic Pentameter makes this one basically a little mock Shakespeare play set in a hotel hallway. Reece's demented version of the Hokey-Cokey lives rent free in my head.

Love a bit of iambic pentameter - takes me back to school. Like Dryfesands says it’s basically a 30-minute Shakespeare play Freddie Mercury was from Zanzibar

I adore this episode! Such a funny, creative, clever idea, taking its lead from Shakespearean comedy, complete with iambic pentameter. Fantastic cast including Tanya Franks, Bill Paterson, Rory Kinnear, Marcia Warren, and Kevin Eldon, all who've been in many other things. Jaygann Ayeh as Fred the Bellboy is a new face but is excellent. Helen Monks as girlfriend Colette I remember from the great Raised by Wolves. Great actress, but despite her baby face and being referred to as "child" here (playing a late teen I am guessing!) she was actually 26 years old here! Genuinely a top 10 episode for me. Love it.

Love Raised By Wolves. And one of her sisters in that show is in The Detectorists as Lance's daughter Kate.

This is such hard show to rate unlike other shows as every performance is like a stand alone show. This episode is particularly well written and performed, I love this series also the dad in this was the dad in Fleabag, if you've not watched it yet then add it to your list, only 12 episodes so good filler show.

When I hear Zanzibar I instantly think of Tenacious D

Karlitos

Fleabag is really good.

Kevin Eldon that plays the hypnotists was the cleaner in that early Black Books episode, diiiiirty. You'll see him in quite a lot as you go. This is one of my favourite episodes, I think innuendo is quite a tired comedy trope and ironically going back to iambic pentameter innuendo a la Shakespeare made it more worthwhile. And that's not even touching on the farcical plot side of things. Just a really fun, well executed wee episode! Greg, I'm glad you got some vindication for what type of plug you were thinking of 🤨😂

Christian Rolfe

I think Zanzibar was just the name of the hotel

🎤 what's your favourite dish? 🎤 I'm not going to cook but I'll order it from Zanzibar 🎤..... might be wrong but it was something like that 🤔

SamSykes

Zanzibar reminds me of Jack Black/Tenacious D 😉

Christian Rolfe

Yeah but that's why the episode was called Zanzibar, after the hotel, hotels obviously named after the place 🙄

When you think about it both twins have been pissed on! And the prostitute has a talent for going to both types of toilet on command!

This is one of my favourite of the bunch. As others have said, it is written in Iambic pentameter and is basically a love letter to Shakespeare. The higher status characters stick more closely to it where as the lower status characters often speak in blank verse. The idea of having a pair of twins, separated at birth is Classic Shakespeare (specifically Twelfth Night and Comedy of Errors) and there is a direct homage to A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Titania falls in love with Bottom after falling under a spell. The twist was there but, as you noted, we knew about it from the beginning. Again, this is a very Shakespearian thing to do. The use of Dramatic irony to clue in the audience whilst the people in the world of the play are oblivious. Shakespeare was also know for his sometimes downright rude and filthy language in his plays, this was nicely echoed here too. This really is quite the piece of writing, I can't speak of it highly enough.

The actor Kevin Eldon...he turns up in nearly everything
