Rewinding a few chapters, Gram's Stake seems to a long term investment. I wonder why Granny helped Rick with it. Surely that lucrim could be better spent. Remember that guy who got stabbed in the neck in the match fight? Maybe something to keep that from happening. (The neck stabbing really stuck with me.)

Rick's best quality is actually his defense, so he wouldn't be as vulnerable to such an attack. Anyway, Granny Whitney gave him that not for the sake of the long term investment, but to improve his stamina in the short term.

Glad you liked it! The tournament is five months from when Rick learned about it, so there's plenty of other stuff that needs to happen yet.
