omg ive been waiting allll day 🙏😭

Michael West

You’re going to love this. As with Ashara Dayne, so many great side characters and stories that didn’t make the show. Getting in the characters thoughts makes the book so much more immersive.

Nick Jones

Only 30 mins in but really enjoying this format. I think about asoiaf vs GoT in a similar way to the Harry Potter books vs movies. Both are great but there’s just SO much more room for character development/sub plots/lore in the books. One of the strengths of the asoiaf books is the POV chapters. Seeing everything from a single characters point of view adds so much to the story. And sometimes it’s a great way to misdirect the readers.

WanderingBecauseLostLol

As someone who has never read the books or heard of Ashara Dayne either, I wonder if she's not simply a red herring "Jon's mom" that we're meant to think Ned hooked up with at this point? But that's probably too simple an idea for this series

Robby Mack

I'm only 20 minutes in, but I'll watch these all religiously! I wouldn't be surprised if the format is unpopular, but this is far better than I was even hoping for, personally.

My_Cousin_Mose

OK I love the format. I love that you're just reading with the camera on and when you get to interesting parts you just start yapping. Its literally an edited book reaction. You are absolutely cooking with the Bran is dead theory. I've never heard anyone else say that and I've never considered it before but I think it's certainly a possibility

raine

im only like halfway thru this book and this might be stupid but i was wondering if ned telling cat to never mention ashara again, if he was just saying that to imply that she may be jons mother, but he wont talk about it. and that way the matter just isnt brought up again in general, but theres probably something more to it🤷‍♀️

Alexander Ocean

Aight hear me out lol - is it possible to get a top down angle so we can see the page you are on and have you drag your finger as you read? That way we can read with you? Or is it possible to read out loud so it’s like we’re listening to an audiobook + your commentary?

Joey Largehands

I've said I'd on youtube I'd pay to watch your book reactions, now here I am. This will be fun! General word of advice before I start. Take everything you've internalized from the show and throw it out the window. This'll be like meeting your favorite (and least favorite) characters for the first time all over again, and in some cases, you may put them in the opposite categories. Strapped in!

Joey Largehands

The only other Patreon I am paying for is another youtuber who's reacting the books. The difference is he does a live listen (and reaction) to the audiobooks. For me these are like my personal online book clubs. 1. Give us all your thoughts. Seriously, the one drawback to this style is we're seeing your recap rather than a full live read through (or listen; i.e. word for word), so any detail you find interesting, feel free to share. They more than likely matter, and they'll be someone here who'd be able to discuss it with you. You only get to give your first impression once, ha. 2. It's crazy that the two characters you felt you didn't understand are arguably the two most important characters. You'll def enjoy being in their heads then. 3. Given your initial interest in characters, this'll be a fun journey to see you go through, ha! 4. I'll be spamming your comment sections on these videos. Apologies in advance.

Joey Largehands

Cat's chapters are some of the best in the entire series. Her POV is incredible.

Jacob Cahoon

This is literally my favorite thing I have ever seen! This is content I have wanted as a book reader for years and years!!!! And to think my favorite most attentive reactor is the one to do it! I feel so lucky, thank you

Joey Largehands

Red Priests and Targaryens are separate entities. The Lord of Light religion has been around for thousands of years (and likely predates the Targs) and the Targs assimilated with the Faith of the Seven (for the most part) in Westeros. At no point did they worship the Lord of Light as far as we know, and Valyria had their own gods. Some of the dragons are actually the names of their gods. When you eventually meet Melisandre, you'll learn more about the origins of TLOL, the what, where, how & why.

Mari

i love u acknowledging that some things cant be in the show and would be harder to do it seems like a fact that many fans forget. this book is very descriptive on both characters and things that happen and then u have to find actors that fit set descriptions also some roles require physical change within and then u have actors like the kid who plays bran who grows up way too fast for his role which make the ages of every other character confusing

Joey Largehands

Yeah, I think George adds these details to make it feel uncomfortable because it's too young (even given the world) to consent at that age*. She's been sold as a child bride. Generally speaking: Like with most of the children in this story, they go through experiences that people their age shouldn't have to, but because the generations before them also went through it, it's considered okay and thus the cycle of trauma continues. *Yet I'm still disturbed that GOT decided to change that scene to what they did.

Joey Largehands

It's Robert Arryn... the show changed it to Robin because they thought viewers wouldn't be able to differentiate two people with the same name.

My_Cousin_Mose

Getting into some characters heads will make you like them more and getting into others will make you loathe them. Catlyn certainly does not come off any better in the books than she does in the show lol.

Joey Largehands

Great observation on Robert's colored memory of Lyanna.

Justin Serwinski

Wondering if you’re imagining the show characters or following the book’s descriptions/forming your own images. I saw the show first and I tend to see the actors rather than adhering to the books’ descriptions, although sometimes I mix them together. Also, there’s an iOS app (I think it’s World of Ice and Fire) that you can use to visualize the journeys of each character over the course of each book (even chapter-by-chapter) and you can select which books you’ve read so you’re not spoiled while doing so. I don’t think it’s perfect but it might be helpful if you want to track where characters travel over time and stay acquainted with the map & distances between places.

Joey Largehands

That Bran chapter (his first dream) is my favorite chapter to see reactors react to. Criminal that no version of this made the show. And that's why he named his direwolf Summer. P.S. A little crackhead lmao. Wouldn't say he literally died, but he has had what you might term a "metaphorical rebirth"... let's see if anyone else ends up going through something similar.

Jacob Cahoon

I cannot wait for your next book vlog! I watched this video and laughed and grinned the whole time. So much joy!! And the differences and details you notice are spot on. The books will surprise you a lot I think. So many minor secondary characters that the show left out or combined end up having some of my favorite moments in the books. You’ll love them!

joe gibson

awesome format. felt like a re read without having to do the hard work

Yari mandi

Really loved this since I’m in the same position as you. Currently reading the books after seeing the show, it’s really nice to have some knowledge from the show and also be able to imagine the faces of the characters while reading. I agree with you that Jon and Dany definitely lacked in the show while in the books you can understand them more. Also like you said, littlefinger in the books is hilarious 😭

IcySystem

Watched the whole thing, very fun! I enjoy the format :)

Jay

Love this format. This is great content. Keep going!

Regarding your question about show Dany vs book Dany with Drogo: The showrunners explained, that they prefered the relationship to develop over time and be in one direction for simplicity. Starting at the horrible grape scenes -> Dany enduring it -> learning skills from Doreah -> having enjoyable sexual activites with Drogo -> embracing the culture, but being a Targ at the same time and so on. In the books their first night is more consensual and Drogo is more respectful. Many readers remember this scene and romanticize book Drogo. Show Drogo gets critized in turn (rightly so ofc, not arguing against that). BUT readers forget the scenes that come after. Dany+Drogo is more complicated in the books. It's not linear or one directional. Dany has some horrible times ahead. And this is what the show runners wanted to avoid. Ups and downs would confuse the audience and I understand their decision. Spoiler Warning for Chapter 23 Licha! "Yet every night, some time before the dawn, Drogo would come to her tent and wake her in the dark, to ride her as relentlessly as he rode his stallion. He always took her from behind, Dothraki fashion, for which Dany was grateful; that way her lord husband could not see the tears that wet her face, and she could use her pillow to muffle her cries of pain. When he was done, he would close his eyes and begin to snore sofly and Dany would lie beside him, her body bruised and sore, hurting too much for sleep. Day followed day, and night followed night, until Dany knew she could not endure a moment longer. She would kill herself rather than go on, she decided one night …"

Mari

if u kept up with the history and lore u prob would caught it by the end of season 3 😭😭. there is a reason they repeat the event of roberts rebellion over and over again in them

Mari

35:33 thats why i say skipping scenes in got was stupid especially if u were going to read the book idk why ur mods told u to do that and i hate when reactors do that shit the book feeds u their history and the dance of the dragons is their history if they talked abt it in GoT u shouldve just watched it lol. knowing an ending doesnt mean u know the full story and knowing who gets killed doesnt mean u know the ending.

Joey Largehands

Agreed, acting skills comes before looks match. I'd say in some cases though they chose to be different for difference's sake. Renly probably the biggest example.

Joey Largehands

Very good points tbf.. I think that ultimately still ruins her season 1 arc.. it focuses too much on the developed romance with Drogo rather than her inner strength, self-confidence and cultural assimilation being at the forefront. The show ties everything she does to Drogo, which starts to become a pattern with her through the series.

Johnny R

Reading chair!!

IcySystem

I think there’s a misunderstanding here, so: I didn’t say their first night was consensual in an absolute or moral sense - I said it was more consensual than in the show, which is a relative comparison. That wording may have been imprecise on my part and went over your head while being rubbed the wrong way. I’m also not arguing “she seemed to like it," and I’m not equating bodily reactions with desire. Never used those words. Putting that in quotes as if I said it is a strawman. Stop it. What I’m talking about is textual framing. In the book, the first night is written as hesitant but not violent, and Drogo responds when Dany says no. That framing is very different from the show’s explicit assault, and it’s why some readers remember Book Drogo more favorably - often forgetting what comes later. Those later chapters make it clear the relationship is deeply harmful. My point is about narrative presentation and adaptation choices, not about justifying Drogo or denying the coercion involved.

Lee Smith

A thing you'll probably also start to notice is the books are a lot more deft at handling sexual violence (not that George is perfect).

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Agreed 💯 Her mods told her that watching A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms show as it airs will spoil House of the dragon. That's why she's not reacting to A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms now. I can't imagine HBO spoiling it's own show while both are still airing and planning to run for few more years. I believe if she reacted to GoT without skipping, she wouldn't have really remembered those spoilers from the show or from history and lore unless someone pointed out those are spoilers. If she reacted to history and lores she would have had a better understanding of thos world already. I've read books, but it never takes away the thrill of watching the show for me. So does for all the other hundreds of thousands who've read the books. They all still find the show amazing. But some mods just trying to be overly cautious destroys the experience for her and for her viewers

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Hi. Which is the other reactor reacting to a song of ice and fire audio books? I'm interested in any reactors reacting to these books.

B

Saying a grown is man having "consensual" and "sweet" sex with a 13 year old girl is kinda crazy ngl

Vishnu Vatheriparambil Mohandas

Did you realise that Bran saw there were several other people lying dead below during his falling vision with the crow chapter. Crow said those people failed to fly so they died. What did you make of that?

Joey Largehands

Hey Vishnu, the reactor is Immersive Reactions.

Flexorcist

Ashara Dayne.. oh what could’ve been

CM

Yes, exactly! Even if she physically said 'yes' on that first night, she is still a literal child who is just trying to make the best of an impossible situation. That's not consent.

IcySystem

Nobody would argue against that from a modern perspective. However, in the medival fantasy story of asoiaf, she's not a child. I would argue, that most readers are discussing the story within the rules of the world itself. Here's a quote from an interview with GRRM: "Why did the wedding scene change from the consensual seduction scene ... to the brutal rape of Emilia Clarke? We never discussed it. It made it worse, not better," Martin said in "Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon." When Marcella writes "she didn’t say yes out of desire but out fear and because what other option she had", that's a wrong interpretation of the text, I'm sorry. Missing or ignoring important lines. The chapter is written from the point of view of Dany after all and GRRM tries to give enough hints.

Licha Reacts!

It’s set in medieval times! Unfortunately, that wasn’t crazy back then… Bran just called himself “a man grown” at 8 years old 😭 But I totally get what you’re saying and of course in real life that would be disgusting 🤢

Licha Reacts!

I totally would but I honestly don’t know the rules on that! I know there’s copyright rules for books and if there’s too much of a book added into a video they can remove the video because of copyright ☹️☹️

Licha Reacts!

I definitely hear you! Dany’s story is sooo tricky because she’s coming into her own power but she genuinely has no choice in the scenario The scene between her and Drogo definitely threw me off because he had respected her “no” until she had said “yes” This threw me for a loop because obviously the show is much more brutal about it Definitely doesn’t amend that Dany doesn’t have a choice in being here and if she could TRULY choose, she wouldn’t be having a wedding night with Drogo in the first place ☹️ I’m really sorry if I miscommunicated that!

Nathaniel Hilton

omg im so excited to watch this! You're the first person to react to the show AND do book vlogs after.

Marc van de Klashorst

Ashara Dayne. Not in the Top 300 characters that are most mentioned in the books, but hangs over the story and is the basis for many theories.

Widad

Omg I love this

K

I think the show changed their wedding night because of Dany's age being changed. Obviously she had to be older in the show. She clearly needed to be played by an adult actress. However, I think a lot of Dany's character is driven by her sexual trauma. No matter how horrific and traumatic it is for a young woman to be forced into marriage with a stranger, this is clearly a very common thing in the ASOIAF universe and we encounter many female characters who had no choice in their marriages. It's important to Dany's character that what happens to her is somewhat more awful than the norm-- that informs the decisions she starts to make once she has power, and the people she wants to protect. I think if we got the original book sex scene with an adult Emilia Clarke in the first episode it wouldn't give the necessary setup for her character, because people would just be like "Oh she was scared at first, but she's into him, guess it all worked out!" Whereas in the book readers understand that these circumstances are deeply traumatic for a young girl even if her husband is more gentle than she expected, and it's made clear her youth here is unusual even in the world of the book (Viserys asking if Drogo really likes his girls so young.)
