Cassandra

Maester Aemon is Aerys II (mad king) great uncle

Henry Parker

Don't forget that it is much cheaper to write a battle scene than it is to film it with a TV budget, especially for the first season. The role that money plays in book v show differences is underdiscussed I think. Its the same reason why there are fewer dreams and less magic compared the book, as you have already seen. If you want one explanation as to why the final seasons turned out how they did, look up the amount the main cast of the show got paid for each of the final 6 episodes. To sign them on for two more seasons to give the plot more room to breathe it would have required astronomical contracts, etc.

William Lenzi

My opinion is stick to the books and not audio, just wait until you are settled to start the next book, it is fantastic so far and i started re reading again with you which has made it even more enjoyable, now I know why people like book clubs 😅

bloodraven

"where men are iron and dragons rule" means knights (they use armor) and targaryens ruling although this is not true right know. most knights are in westeros so people in essos always makes the connection to knights wearing armor

Woodstove

Love the series so far. Wondering if there are any characters or moments that surprised you with how different they are from the show, and what your favourite POVs are?

William Lenzi

Jon burned his hand from grabbing the tapestry he lit on fire, not from the white necessarily

Mari

aegon is aemons younger brother and aerys was aegons grandson

Voting for no audiobook if we’re doing that

My_Cousin_Mose

I actually wouldn't mind if you switched to the audiobook briefly. It would be cool to hear some of your thoughts post chapter. The audioboook is a bit rough though. Roy Dotrice (RIP) was not the best choice and struggled to voice the many female characters. Fun fact he also played the pyromancer in season 2 of the show.

Marc van de Klashorst

I would definitely not go for the audiobooks, because the House of the Undying needs to be read, not listened to. That scene is so dense and full of prophecy and whatnot, it's impossible to catch it all by listening.

Marc van de Klashorst

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks the 'kings' in Dany's dragon dream are her ancestors. But their eye color makes me think they are ancestors from far, far longer back than the Targaryens (those who have read The World of Ice and Fire will know).

Marc van de Klashorst

"The second moon was an egg, and it wandered too close to the sun. It cracked open and dragons poured out." "Moon is wife of sun, it is known" "Moon of my life" / "My sun and stars" And then comes the pyre scene: the moon (Dany) wanders close to her husband, the sun (Drogo), and what happens? Eggs crack and dragons come out. Masterful writing.

Joey Largehands

No to audiobook as most have said. Happy traveling! Safe drive.

Joey Largehands

Cat's intelligent in her own right, not simply because she's married to Ned. Keep in mind her father was Lord Paramount of the Trident. She grew up in the Riverlands so knows the area (and politics) well. You'll see through her chapters how educated she is and just how much she retains all of her years of learning. A lot of the lore we get from the books is from her chapters.

Joey Largehands

George really wrote Walder Frey's dialogues well. It really reads like a rambling old man.

Joey Largehands

Robb did not lose his wolf. Friendly reminder to park the show to the side lol

Joey Largehands

Yep, Westeros. Love when George does that with colorful descriptions from 'foreigners'. Also cool name, my dragon is red, I promise!

Joey Largehands

Just to add it wasn't specificaly Tyrion failing so much as it was putting the undisciplined savages on the left (by the water) to funnel the Northmen and pin them back and into the water. Tyrion was just a convenient potential casualty along with his Vale mountain clan. Keep in mind Ser Gregor Clegane was leading this faction of the army, so he was also at risk.

Joey Largehands

"A dead man is beyond fear" - Remember what Ned told Bran in the very first chapter, a man who deserts the Night's Watch knows his life is forfeit, which makes him dangerous because there's nothing he won't do. Ironically, Jorah is a perfect example of this since Ned was on his way to behead him for...... Selling People Into Slavery! But Jorah fled. The richness in the dialogues and story is so fun to explore.

Joey Largehands

Great question on Jon not quite thinking through breaking his oath. We do get his thoughts but it's mostly an impulsive decision based on his own pride and wants. Jon wants very bad to be a hero and a Stark, and die for it. What better way than to join his brother to avenge their father. Consequences be damned. But let's be real, his friends saved him from a quick, unceremonious death.

Joey Largehands

Re: the entire arc with Dany x Mirri, one of the biggest lessons for Dany is the value / price of life & death. Keep that theme in mind throughout the story, and especially for Dany.

My_Cousin_Mose

I'm not exactly a sword nerd but a bastard sword is also called a "hand and a half sword" and can be used 1 or 2 handed. Bastard swords and longswords are often mistaken for each other but the bastard sword is typically a little shorter and broader. Ice would be classified as a greatsword because it was only usable with 2 hands. There are so many different types of swords used throughout history and in different cultures.

Deandre r Swift

They didn't have the budget in the first season to film a battle.

Deniz Şişman

This style is the best. Please don't change the format. First impressions as you read them will be more fun as we go along because there will be much bigger changes from the show coming up!

Mason Pagnotta

Your thoughts on wight blood is a little off you might need to go back as you said. he only burned his hand grabbing a burning curtain and throwing it over the wight

Milica Djedovic

So Maester Aemon is a brother to King Aegon the V, who was a grandfather to King Aerys II, the Mad King. I don't really want to give more details than that, so as not to accidentally spoil anything.

Dae

Licha ahh theory: Robb mentioned he saw a raven, ravens are negative, negative like the mad king..? Ya’ll.. I think robb is the mad king reincarnated

James Thomas

If anything she is slightly more intelligent. She's a lot more switched on and engages fairly shrewdly with the politics. Her problem is her temper and her love for her family, which isn't a bad thing but considering the politics involve her family... yeah.

Mari

yes she is manic

Tylor

I’d reread the Jon part. His injury is just a really bad burn

TalbertInc

The line about Aerys, he said “my brothers grandson,” which means his brothers grandson is Aerys - not that his brother is Aerys. Also just generally, it’s so cool you’re reading the books and reacting to them. Never seen someone do this in quite this way, super happy to see you doing this - especially in such a long format. Bought the Patreon since just I saw part 1 and had seen your show reactions previously. I read the books before watching so it’s super interesting to see a reverse show to book reading. Also the tinfoil theories are great, keep them going since we all have our own.

Rafa

Can't wait for the rest!

BloodyBen

Robb died before his wolf

BloodyBen

No Aemon is not Aerys' brother

Avery

NEED the next book
