Posting this the same time as the NFL draft is diabolical

William Lenzi

The iron islands and the dornish stories in the show were nerfed so much compared to the books

Mari

baelon is also a valyrian name . there might be some hints there but these names have somewhat etymology and just like our world its not uncommon for someone to have a name from another culture especially the culture of the people in charge.

Mari

both the daynes and hightowers have members with valyrian features tho having no known ties to the valyrians and predate the valyrians.

BloodyBen

R'hllor and the Drowned God are definitely not the same thing

BloodyBen

Magic was never gone, the return of the dragons strengthened certain magic but magic as a whole was never gone. Things like warging, skinchanging, glamour magic, R'hllor magic, Faceless Men magic have always been around even long before Daenerys was even born nevermind before her dragons were born

Marc van de Klashorst

"Old Nan is never wrong." Yes! This is why Tyrion's speech about stories at the end of the show is in a weird way in line with the books, even though it made no sense in the context of the show. People (in-world) should listen more to the likes of Old Nan and Osha and to all those songs they always talk about and then dismiss as folly.

Love Arya's story the most through acok and asos

"Fire and Sword" in association with the Greyjoys: My first thought was that raiders often burn the villages that they just robbed. Fire could also be used against other ships? But I can see the confusion, they are a water/navy/island nation.

IcySystem

Interesting. I wasn't very aware why raiders burned stuff. It seemed a bit stupid to me to burn the villages that you want to rob later again. It's like destroying the whole beehive as a badger so you can't come back later. Reading a bit more about it: It weakens them for future attacks. Burning their ships prevents them from following and attacking the greyjoys on their island. There's also the terror and reputation aspect. And they burn mostly the stuff that they can't steal.

my read on the whole prophecy thing in ASOIAF was always that there is an undertone of realism in every aspect of the world even if the world is magical and has fkn dragons. The same i thought then would be true with prophecies. lots of bs and embellishments and false connections to the point that it purposefully makes the reader also see connections and prophecy where there is only coincidence and just realism. in a way the reader also joins in the prophecy manifesting. When i read the book I thought there was some truth to the prophecies but they had been so distorted that the meaning behind them were actually lost or like unexpected/different

Aj

Nerfed? More like butchered lol.

Aj

Yeah, from this point on, the books do start to diverge significantly from what you've seen on the show, especially the last two books.

Itss_NattyJ

Thank you for overlaying the chapters you’ve on! 🙏🏽

Omg I have been waiting for so long for you to hit on the “drowned god and red god are the same” theory. Religion/magic and where they come from/is god(s) real/who is sending prophecy/etc is such a huge part of the books that isn’t in the show, and I think is one of the most important parts of the series to Martin. I’m holding off on what I think the answers are (to avoid spoilers), but you’re doing better than 90% of fans lol

Jordan Clark

It’s a shame we never got Victarian in the show. He’s definitely one of the coolest characters from the books

Lee Smith

I kinda agree with ur rhllor =drowned god except I dont think the gods are real. I think everybody is using the same blood magic and building cultures off of it

Kemi Stanton

Omg girl I can't WAIT for you to learn more about Euron. Your mind will be absolutely blown by how massively different and important he is. There's a lot of great stuff in the greyjoy chapters. I want to comment stuff about the gods but I think I'll wait until you get to feast because I have a lot of stuff to yap about with the old gods. I'm loving where your head is at though, you pick up stuff so quickly and I love listening to people who are new to ASoIaF theory crafting come up with stuff.

Kemi Stanton

Have you ever heard the theory about old Nan being a child of the forest or having one in her ancestry? I go back and forth on whether I actually believe it but it's a really fun and interesting theory.

Marc van de Klashorst

I've heard it, but as with most theories my main question would be: what would be the narrative and/or thematic point of this? At least with Dunk-Brienne, they both have this "they're true knights, even if they're not true knights" narrative, and it plays into the story's idea that titles mean nothing, it's who you are as a person that matters.

These early chapters are some of my favorites. The Arya chapters especially are gut wrenching. I still think of the woman who would only say please, and the little girl Weasel
