the show did edmure so dirty

Brandon Morris

My friend, who started the series when this book released, recently reminded me that this came out in 1998. Bill Clinton was president and I wasn't even a teenager yet, pretty wild. I started after season 1 of GOT, which even that was 15 years ago now.

I'll never forgive the show for making Edmure a jerk. "They were afraid" always tugs at my heart strings. Is it wise? No. But he cares about his people.

Cat is so well written. i'm so excited for you to get to the last cat chapter. It's my favourite chapter of the whole book.

Marc van de Klashorst

"I'm just going to let the book tell me what that means." No, that is not how this works :-). Next Dany chapter will be fun.

No seriously, her bit of reflecting on George writing such a complex mother character is a thought I've had many many times. For an old man who has never had children it's astounding how well Cat is written. It's especially rare to see mothers in fiction who aren't simply reduced to the "motherly" trope. Cat is flawed, she plays favourites, she can be cruel and unkind, but she's still a mother who constantly thinks of her children. It's so good.

To be fair, GRRM wasn’t that old when he wrote Cat… It is absolutely fascinating, though. Rereading the books properly for the first time in a while, it struck me how many subtle changes the show made to her character to make her more… acceptably motherly. Like her wanting Ned to stay back in Winterfell with his family, instead of saying “Nope, ride off to King’s Landing this instant and sort these people out.” When around 2:50 Licha claims it’s strange to hear Catelyn’s very specific fantasy of strangling Cersei – well, maybe it would be strange for ShowCatelyn. Here? Not so much. Like how exasperated she is with Edmure saving the peasants. Ynql Fgbarurneg pnzr sebz fbzrjurer. Ab jbaqre gurl qryrgrq ure. 3:10: Oh, Licha. You and the gods. Can’t wait for you to 1) read The World of Ice and Fire, 2) read Fire and Blood, 3) watch the rest of the GoT lore videos. 4:05: Ah, we can finally pull the quote out: "You know I've always considered women to be people." – GRRM, on being asked how he writes such three-dimensional women. 10:00: Is Tywin playing them, or does he think he has no choice but to go to King’s Landing? If Stannis were sensible and just communicated with the Northerners/Riverlanders, so they could coordinate, would Tywin be doing anything differently? Show-watcher warning: beware of assuming Tywin is as smart as the show says he is. I mean, he may be so; but I don’t know that the conclusion he’s playing everyone is based on the text as opposed to based on Charles Dance. 13:45: Another aspect of how well-written Cat is – when she makes her comments about not being a battle commander and so forth, to a large extent she seems to believe what she’s saying, Internalized misogyny is a hell of a drug. Sometimes I wonder if these changes were done on purpose by the show runners or because they misinterpreted the character from the books. Same goes for example for the relationship of Cersei and Jaime which they portray as a genuine love story. There are many other examples. Book Edmure is a genuinely good, empathetic (!) guy, also an inspiring leader to his vassals and decent warrior, just not a particularly smart war strategist maybe. Meeting the Lannister army in open battle, retracting the Twins garrison, just trusting the Freys in general, all rather dumb ideas. But I think even that could be put down to a lack of life experience. In the end, it’s also not a smart move from Robb to leave Edmure behind to command 12000 men and take Brynden with him. The other way round would have been much smarter. Tl;dr, I agree with the comment. (Sorry for the essay)
