Oh my gosh. After watching your reaction to Saving Private Ryan last week, I can just imagine how emotional this movie will be for you. Desmond Doss is a different kind of war hero because he never picked up a gun, and he never took a life. The amount of bravery and empathy he displayed is just awe inspiring. I honestly don’t know if I cried more watching this movie or Saving Private Ryan. Can’t wait to watch along with you. I have loved all of your reactions so far.

Hollywood had been trying to make the Desmond Doss story into a film, ever since the end of the war, but Desmond would never sell his story to anyone. He never saw the point. He was as Humble as they get. Hollywood even sent Audie Murphy in the 50s, to speak to him and convince him to sell the film rights to his story. Audie Murphy being the Most Decorated soldier of World War II, and I believe still Most Decorated in History, who went to Hollywood after the War and became a film star, making films until the late 60s, even starring as himself in the autobiographical film, To Hell and Back (1955). It wasn’t until the early 2000s, that Doss’ story became more widely known. I never knew about him until seeing this film. Apparently there was much more of his story that was left out this adaptation. I’ve been meaning to look it up for a while. Desmond Doss’ story was maybe the greatest and last untold True Story of World War II.

To Hell and Back is such a good movie. My mom was such a huge Audie Murphy fan. I used to sit and watch some of his movies with her when I was a kid, but being a kid I really didn’t appreciate them for what they are. Just saw that there are several books about Desmond Doss available online. Might have to put a couple on my Xmas list. I’d really like to learn more about him myself.

Any serious movie about war is going to be gut wrenching. But the one aspect about this movie that helps ease some of the sadness is a beautiful love story at its heart. Desmond and Dorothy were married for 49 years until she died in a car accident in 1991. If you would like to watch another movie that pulls on the same emotional heartstrings as this movie, I recommend The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe.

Easily the best war film ever made.

Saving private ryan is better

Dan M

Let’s just call a truce and say that they’re both really incredible movies.

Alex Gorell

Nah I’m going to have to disagree I think this is better.

Another fantastic reaction. I thought along the same lines as you when I first saw this movie. I always liked Andrew Garfield as an actor, but I didn’t know the extent of his acting range. The way he doted on Dorothy when they first met was a little creepy, but at the same time it was really endearing. You seemed surprised that this movie was directed by Mel Gibson. I happen to think that Mel Gibson is one of the most talented actors of our generation. But he’s also a very good director. He may take some liberties in his direction for dramatic effect, but like with his acting, his passion for his craft is evident. If you’re interested in some more Mel Gibson directed movies, and you haven’t seen them yet, please watch Braveheart and The Man Without a Face for your channel.

I loved this reaction so much! I would also like to put in a request for the movie "The Last Samurai" Its loosely based on a real story but very much based on real samurai of Japan in the 1870s when Japan wanted to modernize with the rest of the world. In ww2 like you saw in Hacksaw Ridge, they cant stand the shame of defeat, its honorable to die in battle or take your own life. ITs based on Samurai principles. The Last Samurai is a sort of deep dive into an amazing beautiful story that expands on their culture.

So some fun facts. -The number portrayed in the film is actually pretty inaccurate. He actually saved way more people. It was actually in the hundreds. They didnt want to put that real number in the film because people would think it would of been to unrealistic. So they lowered the amount to make it more believable because it truly is amazing how many people he saved. -Desmond actually did end up saving some Japanese soldiers lives. He was truly selfless

Dan M

Very well said 👍 I hope she sees our request. The Last Samurai is one of my favorite movies. Tom Cruise may be the headliner, but Ken Watanabe is the main attraction. His performance is amazing. I would have loved to experience the Japanese culture before they became Westernized.

awesome reaction! after watching a few ww2 movies u should give band of brothers a watch. This is probably what youll get recommended most in the comments especially on youtube. Its a WW2 10 part episode series but one of the greatest shows of all time. A huge number of youtubers have already reacted to it. All loved it. u should def try it out. Made by some of the same guys who did saving private ryan. And is a great lesson into the history of what happened in ww2

if you like Vince Vaughn, another semi serious Role is the Delivery Man 2013. Such a great movie. I think it's his best movie.

Clay F

+1 for "The Last Samurai" (2003)

Clay F

I think his best movies are Swingers (1996), Wedding Crashers (2005), and Dodgeball (2004)

You asked about the numbers and his humility...this is a very very well confirmed story cuz command didn't know why attack plans changed, doctors not knowing where all the patients suddenly were coming from (and remember they were short on supplies and medics) the many reports others in his unit that were saved gave that watched him running around saving others...this is one of the most thoroughly documented medal of honor recipients moment in ww2...as far as story goes, they under sold it cuz it is the case that noone will think it is real if you tell the whole story. This movie is easily in the conversation for most accurately portrayed war film...most of it is public record, feel free to read more about the amazing story of Desmond Doss...also He SAVED 75 but he lowered something like 125 including some Japanese soldiers who didn't somehow make it after he lowered them down...anyway...sorry for very long post, if you or anyone is still reading this, I love the reactions and further I love the reaction to the reaactions and the community being built here...yay....I never know how to end these types of

People tend to be surprised when they see that this was directed by Mel Gibson. But he is an academy award winning director. He won for directing Braveheart, he was also nominated for this film as well. As for accuracies vs. inaccuracies. They said Hacksaw Ridge wasn't as high as it was shown in the film. The flames during the bombardments were bigger than what they are in real life so dramatic affect and that in real life it wasn't his dad that he issues with, it was his uncle but they changed it to dad to make the flow of the story easier to follow. But people before judging. No ONE knew anything about PTSD and World War 1 was the bloodiest most gruesome of the wars. It was a just horrible. Probably one the reasons it's called "The Great War". Oh and how he met his wife was different. However Doss' s son said although there are those few dramatizations, it is largely accurate.

I think this takes the top spot just because its a true story when SPR isnt
