Never looking at fava beans or Chianti the same way!

Picture sitting in a dark theatre that’s completely silent when everyone thinks they’re rushing that injured cop to the hospital, and then he sits up, and Hannibal pulls the officer’s face off of his own. The entire theatre lost its collective mind! And then…the amount of screaming and yelling at the screen when Clarice is trying to find Buffalo Bill in that dank basement, and the screen goes blank, and that freak show starts to follow her around with the night vision goggles. I can’t think of a movie that made me feel more uncomfortable, more fidgety, and so enthralled at the same time. And how the hell does Sir Anthony Hopkins NOT blink for so flippin’ long with a camera in his face?!?! Fantastic movie. Can’t wait to watch along with you.

YOU, and Silence Of The Lambs in the same room? *Rubs hands together evilly* Hee! This is gonna be good.

Justtired

Despite their on screen chemistry, Jodie Foster only spoke to Anthony Hopkins while the camera was rolling. He was so good as Lecter, it scared her. Both of them won Oscars for this film. There is a sequel and two prequels. The first prequel, Red Dragon (an earlier film called Manhunter was also based on the same book), gives you more incite in to Lecter. I highly recommend watching the series Hannibal at some point. While a bit different than the films, Mads Mikkelsen is brilliant in the title role. One more suggestion: Since you like Criminal Minds, you would like Mindhunter.

Red Dragon plz)

"Has been recommended to me. I heard it is good. A lot of you have recommended I watch it...." *oscars: best picture, actor, actress, director, screenplay....(91-92 had heavy hitting movies so it sweeping was kinda big BiG in a big year) Glad you finally got around to it lol Jokes aside, gunna be a fun watch with you I bet...

*There was no blinking harmed in the making of this film*

One of director Jonathan Demme's best visual motifs (across most of his movies) is his use of point-of-view shots, with characters staring directly into camera during conversations. It can feel claustrophobic, trapping the audience in a character's perspective, and I especially love the nuance of when it highlights how Clarice notices the leering attention of all the men around her outside of her dealings with Lecter. Demme uses the same motif in his masterpiece "Philadelphia" but instead to highlight people's bigotry and paranoia during the AIDs crisis, making the audience feel simultaneously prejudicial and prejudiced against. He really is a genius. Great reaction.

Hope you watch/react to the other Hannibal movies. Hannibal and Red Dragon. The show Hannibal. I forget what the prequel movie is called.

Oh yes!! One of those films I'll never get bored of watching. You should watch the other films too. They often get bad reviews, because they're not as good as this film...but that is a high bar. Still very very watchable. There's a very strong case to be made that Dr Hannibal Lecter is the greatest villain of all time. He's frighteningly intelligent, he's a trained psychiatrist and an exceptionally knowledgeable physician. His anatomical knowledge is extraordinary. He has sophisticated knowledge of painting, sculpture and artists. He's an accomplished musician and has an extremely sophisticated understanding of classical music. He's extremely well-read and constantly draws on literary references. He speaks multiple languages. He is a gourmet level chef and expert in preparation, ingredients, provenance and technique. Wine expert. Impeccable manners, is extremely articulate, charming. Despises vulgarity, rudeness, stupidity. Has a rigid moral code...it's just not the same as normal peoples. His morality isn't absent; it's highly developed, internally consistent and profoundly alien. I could go on, but you get the picture. And despite everything he is, Lecter genuinely respects Clarice for her intelligence and courage, and their relationship becomes an extraordinarily complicated mixture of manipulation, mentorship, fascination and something approaching affection. The perfect villain.

Well, there goes my Tuesday evening...thank you.

A big +1 for "Mindhunter" (2017-2019) (19 episodes) [IMDb 8.6, RT 97%, RT Audience 95%]. Streaming on Netflix. Based on a true story and inspired by the 1995 non-fiction book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. Mindhunter and Criminal Minds are connected because they both draw from the same real-life FBI agents and historical origins of criminal profiling. The Behavioral Science Unit: Mindhunter portrays the 1970s origin story and formation of the FBI unit that researches and profiles serial killers, while Criminal Minds depicts the modern-day version of that same unit (the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or BAU).

Steve Mercier

Fool's gold is just Lecter fucking with the justice department...they're off chasing fool's gold. Lecter enjoys his pranks.

Justtired

Love that show. It’s a shame we couldn’t get a season 3

You mentioned the girl falling for the injured arm ruse at the van. I recently watched this with another female reactor who was just as quick and sharp and smart as you were about seeing into and calling out things in the movie ahead of time. When this scene started i thought she would start yelling at the girl like you did. Instead she felt sorry for him and thought the girl should help him! She suddenly realized her mistake but it was too late, just like in the film. A brain cramp at the wrong time can kill anybody! The fools gold reference was just Lecter's way of telling Clarice he was screwing with them about the name. It looks like the real thing but its' worthless. You should watch the 2019 series Mindhunter on Netflix. It is a somewhat fictionalized account of the formation of the FBIs Behavioral Analysis Unit in the 1970s. it depicts the unit in its 'figure it out as you go' infancy as somewhat related by Agents Gideon and Rossi in Criminal Minds episodes over the years. It has some chilling performances and would be right up your alley. It is a fairly short series and would make for great reaction content on the channel.

Great reaction, when Lecter was escaping, I said, you were going to catch on to what was happening, and I was right. I said, she is smart she will see it coming, not many do. This movie won best picture of the year and Hopkins won best actor, Foster won best actress. seen this on many time. well make best director Jonathan Demme. Love it

Grizzly

Such a fantastic movie. It is truly deserving of all the awards that it won. Side note: I grew up very near the Buffalo Bill house. Only the exterior was used in the movie, but the current owners of the house have transformed it into a sort of museum of the movie and it is open to visitors. They have constructed a well and everything, although not as deep as what you see in the movie. It is located near Perryopolis PA.

Mister Lou

The first scene with her and Hannibal Lecter was parodied perfectly by Riverdale, Stranger Things and of course Austin Powers.. the line about fava beans and Chianti is all over pop culture. Great movie! Great reaction! Keep up the good work!

You nailed that was Hannibal being carried out on the stretcher to the ambulance. "Well, Clarice - have the lambs stopped screaming?" Jodie Foster I recommend TAXI DRIVER (1976) [AFI Top 100], which has a 12-year old Jodie Foster and a young Robert De Niro. --Nominated for Best Picture Oscar. --Foster and De Niro each nominated for an Oscar.

benjamin smeeth

I would recommend Manhunter 1986, Brain Cox portrays a more menacing and less charming Dr Lecktor, really good film

Ray Ward

Only three films in history have swept the “Big Five” at the Oscars: Screenplay, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Director and Picture. “Lambs” being one of the three as a horror movie is just unprecedented. Fool’s Gold is a reference to panhandlers who thought they’d struck actual gold but merely had found an iron compound of no value. Lecter was telling them the name was worthless. Red Dragon is the prequel to this by the same author. They made a movie of it after this one with a star-studded cast that is decent, but they deviated from the book to shoe horn in more Lecter which comes across as forced (because it was). I think the better version is “Manhunter” made a few years before “Lambs”. Great movie that oozes style from every frame.

Tim Heron

If the film gives you "Criminal Minds" vibes, the BSU, which the department was still called when the film was made, is what eventually became the BAU.

Jeff Turner

Great movie. Excellent reaction, thnaks. If you haven't seen it, you would love the series Mindhunter

Jeff Turner

This movie is legit disturbing and real

Lily

Watching way late here, but I think you nailed it about the gendered subtext of the movie. To me, what puts it a cut above similar films is how clearly its visual language evokes the vulnerability and unease of being a woman in male-dominated spaces (and a male-dominated world). Everything from Clarice being so much smaller then everyone else in the elevator at the beginning to the constant POV shots of men looking at her capture exactly what it's like to be on the receiving end of the male gaze. And most unsettling of all, that the threat of violence is just as present in the men you're meant to trust with your life as it is in actual murderers. In some ways, Lecter becomes the more palatable figure, because at least he's forthright about his malice. It speaks a lot to Jonathan Demme's character and sensitivity as a director that, as a man, he was able to tap into the everyday burden of misogyny in such a specific and resonant way.

Riggo 82

No, Manhunter.

Riggo 82

Totally, it's better than Red Dragon. Way more atmospheric.

MertzRocks

I just saw this posted on YouTube and decided it was time to COME BACK to you, and sorry I had to be away for a bit. There is no way I can watch an edited version of you watching THIS! 3--- 2--- 1--- GO! 🖥️👀

MertzRocks

"...a little gamey"? 😜 Like Lecter would care... Brilliant thinking Tee! The Pembry 'face-off' trick usually gets first-timers! You were too smart for this movie 😘💕 I still don't know how he got the pen to take the clip from it but obvi it had to be before he got trussed up onto the human hand-truck. Great reaction again! (BTW - Will you ever get to El Camino and Better Call Saul?) 🤘😎🎸
