Jared Roberts is the author of hidden webpages, he has a series of stories called "The Machine Stories". The compilation all is linked/connected through technology and weird universe shifting mid story. In my opinion the best of his stories as a standalone other than hidden webpage is this one about lumberjacks, but I can't recall what it's called at the moment.

This show definitely needs two people to bounce comments around and riff. If Isaiah can't do it, get Nick in there. He and hunter have a good energy for this type of thing. The format could be kind of like a meat canyon video. e.g. Hunter is telling Nick scary bedtime stories. The whole premise of the story was really good. I agree it felt a little improvised and there ending was a hard, unsatisfying stop. The style of writing felt haphazard too, but I think that was intentional. It was written like a 16 year old boy, especially one from where this story presumably takes place, in the American Deep South The humor got a little played out, but I think it was great, especially in the beginning.

Being from the same author of The Hidden Webpage I can definitely see the stylistic storytelling parallels. Really intriguing set up with plenty of cool spooky twists and turns. It starts to go off the deep end becoming increasingly surreal and dreamlike, and then doesn't end as strongly as it starts. I still like The Hidden Webpage and feel it definitely didn't fall apart for me as badly as this did. This on the other hand started off really promisingly cool and scary but became a disappointing slog for me until a bizarre unsatisfying ending.

This story is remarkably similar to the Hidden Webpage: our protags were sucked into "the box" which is essentially "the hole" the moment they opened it in that backyard. You could even say that hole is the same hole as the one they dug up, transmuted into reality instead of the digital world. The sexual themes were extremely pronounced but similar, the idea of being taken advantage of by an ambiguous entity that feels like a stalker/predator, a callback to potential buried childhood trauma. The reoccurring appearance of "the snake" is essentially the "bee men" and whether following it may have freed them is left ambiguous as every time it appears, our protags avoid it instead of having that endgame pursuit that the Hidden Webpage protag had, though you could say the end sequence with the jar of blood and the snake on the table was the equivalent of that HWP sequence. It has the same theme of an unknowable evil entity that transcends time and place, that traps people within its realm by throwing non- sequitur distractions and threats at the protag. The escalating ridiculousness of the story is nearly identical to the HWP, but where it seems to hit a brick wall is that the writer decided to end with our characters getting stuck in the "box/hole" instead of being freed like the HWP protag, which leaves no time or room to explore the idea outside the crescendo. It is interesting that the box might not have had anything to do with their situation, but that the father had gotten them stuck in the box before any of this started by interacting with the woman as a teen. If that's true, these protags were born into the box, not reality as we know it, which might overlap with the themes of the HWP and the uncertain reality that he might never have left the Hole, that there's no way out for someone that never existed in reality to begin with. Edit: looking into the release dates between this story and HWP, this story was posted about one year before it, so I think that this story served as kind of a first draft to what would become The Hidden Webpage, where they resolve the abrupt ending, they treat the abuse themes with a lot more subtlety, the buildup and cool off are a lot smoother, and the humor doesn't kill the pacing the way this story does. It seems like this was the progenitor of what became The Hidden Web Page, a much more refined idea, and a much better end product.

I liked the energy guys don’t get me wrong it’s like the bee guys from the hole and I really liked how they were saying things that made him think of her boobs and how he felt ashamed about thinking of them. Sometimes the humor about the sexual stuff was too much but I liked how his mindset started to evolve through the story. From a kid first really diving into sexual things and into someone who has sexual trauma a now feel ashamed for his rashness to get into that world. A better version of this story without the sexual stuff is My Dad Finally Told Me What Happened That Day. Please please please please please please please please read it. Please.

I feel like I don't know what the missing piece of this story is. The Santeria rituals suggest that there is something going on with a cultural divide that I have no context for, but a better writer could have given context and maintained the mystery. Like imagine if Stolen Tongues never had Tiwe and Nathan explaining the American Indian folklore going on. But with even more disjointed yet loosely connected elements going on. Overall I didn't dislike it and was legit spooked at times.

I feel like the writer used the TV mini series adaptation of "The outsider" as an influence and doubled down on the santaria aspect that the series briefly touched on to wrap things up and then kind of realized he was explaining too much or didn't know how to wrap it up so he made a knot with every thread possible to get to that ending pretty solid tho if it ended with them just moving away. The story is about a black family. It didn't hit me until the aunt came into the picture. If race isn't mentioned readers usually visualize white characters. I can see how the story feels confusing and oversexualized if the main characters were white, but if they're black there are several themes of black masculenity and the sexual adultification of black boys. Society sexualizes black men in general and tends to see black teen boys as sexual deviants. The story is good, you could have a lot of discussions on the themes and how the author shows the race and culture of characters without saying it (I just don't feel like typing it up). If you're up for it you should re-listen to the story or read it by yourself with the image of a black family being haunted by a white 40 year old woman / white old man. Themes of white women sexualizing black teen boys because white men push oversexualization on both of them. There's a history of white men first sexualizing women then sexualizing black men (the 40 year old woman's story). The school kids mentioned later in the story are also black which adds the discussion of the SA of black teen boys by older white women and being seen as an adult in the situation (Darnell's story). Happy for Isaiah (Wendigoon) but wish he was here to dig deeper into the themes of this story. I wonder if he would have caught it. (Also the box that's mentioned is the stereotypes that white men put on minorities. We're tempted to "go in" (fit the stereotype) but once we do we're never the same. The box (stereotypes) change people and it gets bigger as the old white guy (white men) put more people in it. We all have a chance to escape (break free of the stereotype), but sometimes escaping has consequences and we think staying (accepting the stereotype as truth) is better.) As the mother of the story said, "Dad would have been so proud of you. Too bad we're in that box." Happy Black History Month ya'll!

Knowing it's by Jared Robert's and the mention of the dept of energy makes me think it's connected to The Hidden Webpage or "the machine stories" that they mentioned in that episode, because that one similarly had that unreality, dreamlike pace to the writing and then had an immediate drop in a sudden end. I personally liked it. I wish he knew the author before hand now cause it's kind of cool if it's a connected thing and could relate back to the Hole from the other story. Being in the box is the same as being in the whole or something and similarly things stop making sense once inside.

This story has some of the best little creepy moments, a horrifying otherworldly old man snake monster that doubles as a sexy lady. Its hard to tell what was real and what wasnt. the abrupt end was a huge bummer. Certain moments with the humor was definitely weird, like the main character gets SA'd and the dad makes jokes and the story goes on. Tbh I keep coming back to this story, I actually love it all the way through. It's just so ridiculous by the end that I'm totally enveloped in trying to understand it. Of course it has objective flaws like the snake not coming back I assumed it was the transformed bodies of his victims, or some symbolism with shed skin and how he's keeping himself or her corpse alive, but it really goes nowhere. "Frog day" made it all worth it though.

This story kind of reminds me of "Weapons". Definitely agree the ending fell really flat, but Hunter did a great job by himself. This was fun all things considered.

That's actually insane! I thought this was just a childhood story and I thought it got a little out there towards the end but I didn't think of it as a childhood story and a black story and that gave this a much more interesting perspective. I didn't care for this one the first time I listened to it but now it has turned around in my mind cuz I took it at face value as like a demon/ monster story and not a metaphor
