For me, Attack on Titan really starts in season 2. Season 1 is very good, but from these episodes onwards it gets crazy. I started reading the manga right after seeing Ymir transform into a Titan.

Since the OVA's are optional viewing, I wouldn't take much from them into the main series, they're just some enjoyable semi-canon supplementary content.

Ilse's notebook was actually written by Isayama and it's part of the manga, so that one at least is 100% canon. The levi and lost girls OVAs do have other writers but they were greenlighted by Isayama as well. I remember reading Ilse's notebook for the first time after finishing season 3 and damn, really impacted me at the time.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your reactions, attack on titan is like a good wine, it just keeps getting better season after season. I feel like you're very genuine in your reactions, you live the story and emphatize with the characters, which is great to see. Also I'm happy that you're starting to warm up to Ymir haha.
