I love Annie so much! She is my favorite character in the whole series and I love how much these episodes flesh her out. I also love the ED Call Your Name (Gemie version), and the animation that goes along with it that really shows just hoe alone Annie felt during her time on Paradis. If you recall all the way back in season 1 when Levi and Mikasa rescue Eren from Annie in the forest, Annie could be seen crying. For as ruthless as she was during that arc (due in no small part thanks to her dad and Marlyean training), she was still just a scared child soldier who wanted nothing more then to just go home to her dad and finally thought the nightmare was over, only to have her last hope ripped away from her. This as well as many other scenes such as Bertholdt’s lament during the end of season 2 or even his cries for help at the end of the first half of season 3 while being eaten, highlight just how traumatized and tragic these kids were, and make you feel so bad for them when they were supposed to be the antagonists we were rooting against for a majority of the series.

This OVA really gives Annie some flavor as a character. I really like it a lot. Especially how well it fits her character into the role of basically doing detective work. That insight into her character, as a quite but logical, pragmatic and level headed thinker, in this OVA reminds me a lot of the main character in the anime Apothecary Dairies. P.S. Annie didn't know what donuts were until Carly gave her one. A dead give away that she was an outsider. On another note, Armin did not know the black liquid he found in the metal cups was coffee back when he found the burnt out campfire used by Reiner, Bert and Zeke in season 3 during the Battle of Shiganshina. Just throwing out a wild hunch but there must be some symbolism to coffee and donuts...🤔...Or maybe not??? 😆

the ED was beautiful omigosh 🥹🥹 YES great callback! i think she also cried a bit before she crystallised herself, which made eren hesitate right?? context is so important and now that we've discovered the cruelty Eldians have faced, it makes it so much easier to sympathise with these poor kids
