Hello, and welcome to MakeThisBattle! - the ongoing written series where Ed and the finest Patrons in 2020 prove that Nice Peter from Epic Rap Battles of History doesn’t actually know anything about history without Google.

Note: The theme in this round was 'Movie & TV Characters' and you offered up a load of suggestions for it. So for this particular round all seven selected for feedback fit the theme.

Columbo vs Hercule Poirot [submitted by Foxdoc & mblpns]

Oh Jeez, do we have to immediately start exposing the gaps in my knowledge? I’m not being fair with myself, I know who Columbo is. I started ERB with him 10 or so years ago.  Wait a minute, that’s Kojak. Columbo is the muttery guy in the trench coat, right? I’m excited to learn about this Hercule character, what do you got for me, Google? Lol. That’s gotta be the first Belgian I’ve seen suggested. Who is this guy? I’ll admit, I’m sold on his moustache alone. Okay he’s famous and in many of the Agatha Christie stories. I’m sold. I don’t usually like choosing match-ups just because of the clickbait value, but Columbo vs Hercule Poirot is just too hot to pass up. We’ll probably get featured on TMZ. I give it a D-

House vs Hippocrates [submitted by Neo!]

Should we settle this once and for all here? I think so. This is probably the longest running perfect suggestion that we never did, and now I think we’ll never do. It’s too late and Dr Strange would be more awesome to explore, if played by Zach Sherwin. That’s a long shot, but we gotta dream. But it is a perfect suggestion, I wish we had done it years ago. Fun trivia: Dante was a recurring extra on House, you can actually spot him in at least one episode. A+

Shirley Temple vs Betty White [submitted by Dragonsblood23]

Hmm… this is interesting. Lloyd always wanted to do Bette White vs Bette Paige. I think there’s a demo, have we released that? We should, probably with lyrics too, because if I remember correctly you can’t understand a word. Anyhow, the task at hand, Shirley Temple makes this awesome. I love it. Tons of history and fun television references. I don’t think it would be everyone’s battle, but it would be someone’s favorite. A-

Shrek vs The Grinch [submitted by Samwise]

I love it. Ha. I really like it. It’s simple and fun and tons of jokes. Beloved characters that can be somewhat easily parodied.  I shudder at the thought of Grinch makeup, but I bet we’d find a way to do it less offensively than that movie did.  Bigger shudder. Great creative idea that feels obvious, but I’ve never seen before.  A

Forrest Gump vs Terry Fox [submitted by Mortal]

Terry Fox…. okay that dude is awesome. If you haven't heard of him before look him up. He's a national hero in Canada. But his remarkable story also exposes how terrible this match-up idea is. Teaming him up against Forrest Gump would probably be a disservice to his memory. Weak sauce. F+

Dwight Schrute vs Ron Swanson [submitted by 2Hats &Tony Rigatoni]

Lol.  Some people would absolutely love this and it could be so funny.  I’m not knowledgeable about either series to write it, but I had never seen Breaking Bad either, and this sounds like a much more lighthearted deep dive. I know enough about both to imagine how great this battle could be. They have tons of ammo, neither will back down, both are highly intelligent and creative and stubborn.  It could be hilarious and popular. No history, but you know… sometimes…. you know. B+

Archimedes vs MacGyver [submitted by Atlas]

Ha. This has been my favorite edition of Make This Battle in a while. There’s something very creative and effective about all of these, even the Fox vs Gump one I have to admit is creative and fun with some nice historical punch. In terms of this suggestion something about pulling off Archimedes and making it awesome is just satisfying to me. This is just a great suggestion for someone like him. It adds levity, fun, and silliness. I don’t know if MacGyver is actually well known enough anymore, but I feel like he’s become almost “Houdini” like you can use his name to explain your role in a situation without having ever seen the show. Another A+

You have made me smile this evening. You have made me feel lighthearted and inspired.  For that, I thank you, and wish you well until next time! -np

"Lloyd's Hot Takes" - EpicLloyd offers up some thoughts!

House vs Hippocrates. We've been seeing this suggestion for years now and while at one point I think it might have been strong; I do fear that House is sadly past it's prime. It was a really popular show here in the United States but I don't know how global it was and there are so many other hospital shows it'd be weird just to choose this guy. I love Hippocrates though and I'd love to see him in the medical cavalcade which I think is a stronger choice for this guy. Shrek vs The Grinch. This stinking banana peel of an idea is in the top five all-time worst ideas of not only the ERB universe but of all universes everywhere. I get dumb and dumber just reading it. What could have possibly inspired such a flaming turd of a notion? These two things are annoying, inconsequential, unimportant and almost completely devoid of any redeeming qualities... and that's just scratching the surface of this abominable suggestion. They are historically moot. Comeidically tired. And morally atrocious, nay, appalling! If ever ERB made this happen, we would likely be arrested and throw in a Russian prison. We would more than likely be flogged, and you know what? The floggers wouldn't be wrong! Good day to you sir! -eL

"Monk's Hot Takes" - our manager chimes in with some wise words!

I have always loved Columbo. It's TV gold. I think the problem with any tv character is we'd need to absolutely nail their persona to do it right and some are tricky to pull off. The guys did White and Grimes superbly. Could we do Columbo justice? Maybe. Poirot is probably easier to do. I like the match-up. I know we did Batman vs Sherlock but the idea of doing another detective character or royale always seems fun to me. House is similar in terms of that pressure to get the character right both in looks and manner. If we did a medical royale why couldn't House show up in that? It'd certainly make it less stuffy. Hugh Lawrie and the way he portrayed that character was so good, I wouldn't personally care about the fact the show may not be a hot topic these days. I'm officially in the 'won't give up on House for ERB' camp. Dwight Schrute vs Ron Swanson is quality. I love both characters. Seeing them battle sounds like a blast. I expect it'd be a joy to write too. Whats not to like?

As ever - we now need to start a new round of makethisbattle!

The new theme is... "Go East". We are looking for match-up ideas featuring people or characters from East Asia - think China, Japan, Korea etc. You can pair them against anyone - fictional or historical. The other character doesn't need to be from East Asia.

And... you can always ignore the theme completely if you prefer. :) But when selecting the match-ups for feedback we will pick 2 or more that match the theme. Seven match-ups in total will be selected.

Same rules apply. Three suggestions per person. You can post them in the comments below, email them to erbpatreon@gmail.com or post them on the Discord server in the dedicated '#make-this-battle' channel.

Deadline for submissions is... 5pm PT on Monday 3rd August

If we are going east then I am going to go Near East and again push for Cyrus the Great: Founder of the Persian Empire vs. Simon Bolivar: Idealogue of Gran Colombia.

Xanadu-King

Ah, another idea that would be great for a Far East/Near East battle.

1. Horatio Nelson vs. Yi Sun-Sin. East vs. West, battle of the great admirals. 2. Cao Cao vs. Oda Nobunaga. Two reuniters who nearly conquered their respective realms following a brutal civil war, and are subsequently given a lot of 'villain' cred. Could make for a good villain battle with Mr. 'I would rather betray the world' going up agains the 'Devil King of the Sixth Heaven'. Sima Yi and Tokugawa Ieyasu could show up near the end to take over.

Zheng He Vs. Mansa Musa in the battle of the "Best journey to impress the world"

James A. Whitney

Hidetaka Miyazaki (From Software) vs Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) Any battle (or especially royale) could include many influential Japanese game developers, so here's my favorite contrasting three: Shigeru Miyamoto (games that are lighthearted and fun) vs Hideo Kojima (games that are serious and narrative) vs Suda 51 (games that are quirky and artsy) And lastly, one that is probably way too 'in this moment' to ever get made, but what the hell, I'm riding the Ghost of Tsushima hype train pretty hard at the moment: Miyamoto Musashi vs Jin Sakai

Shigeru Miyamoto vs Hayao Miyazaki It’s Video Games vs Anime

I've got a couple: Avatar Aang vs. The Dalai Lama. The two spiritual leaders of their worlds, one influenced by Tibetan culture, and the other from Tibet. King James of England vs. Sejong the Great of Korea. King James bible vs. King who invented the Korean script. And finally, Robespierre vs. Mao Zedong. Two radicals, one got overthrown quickly, one ruled for a long time.

BATTLE ROYALE of JAPANESE CREATIVES: Shigeru MIYAMOTO vs Hayao MIYAZAKI (Video Games vs Anime) 3rd: Osamu Tezuka (“God of Manga”) 4th: Toshio Maeda (Shocking and Edgy Adult Art) 5th: Hokusai (OLD SCHOOL Traditional woodblock painting) A bit obtuse, but PLEASE CONSIDER SERIOUSLY! 😅 I elaborate my thought process and justifications below. I’m CONFIDENT in the potential, and would LOVE to hear other’s thoughts on this. (Good OR bad)

Alvin Franco

After so many years not having ANY Japanese characters, you need to go HARD like the Russian battle. Get 5 reps from the Land of the Rising Sun in one big battle. I’m no expert in the political history, wars, or government of Japan. Most of us English-speakers aren’t! But where DO people most commonly relate to Japan? ANIME and VIDEO GAMES. Most viewers will recognize and relate to that geekier angle. But forget about the requests like “Naruto vs Yugi-oh” or whatever. You need to approach it from a HISTORICAL angle that only ERB can. Give us another Thanos VS Oppenheimer that no one knew we wanted, but absolutely fell in love with! School the “anime fans” who don’t even know Osamu Tezuka. Showcase the famous Japanese artists/creators whose works have transcended and influenced the entire world to this day. Starting with SHIGERU MIYAMOTO (of Nintendo) vs HAYAO MIYAZAKI (of Studio Ghibli) Anime vs Video Games! Pretty straight forward, wholesome and unassuming. As a stand-alone, it’s a sweet matchup. The similarities of their names (MIYA) make it that much more amusing as a title. Shigeru Miyamoto last year received the biggest honor in Japan, essentially the Nobel Prize of the country. The award for “Person of Cultural Merit” reserved only for people who have truly made an impact with creations or discoveries. And it’s no surprise, he was basically a rockstar of a creator for creating Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Zelda and all the beloved Nintendo games and characters. He kinda single-handedly saved the self-destructing video game industry by introducing CONSISTENT QUALITY. He can represent the modernity angle in the battle, referencing electronic prowess, digital efficiency, and using puzzles to shape a player’s experience. Hayao Miyazaki, obviously known as the “Disney of Japan” for painstakingly hand-drawn animation that warms the hearts of children and adults alike. He can follow Miyamoto’s verse flaunting his straight-up artistic skill and ability to portray human interaction, having actually had a social life unlike nerdy gamers. 😜 But then comes the walk-on from the GOD OF MANGA himself: Osamu Tezuka! (Arguably, more “Disney of Japan” than Hayao Miyazaki.) A genius, PHD-carrying, beret-wearing comic writer, who basically invented “anime” in general. Made the first Japanese TV cartoons, with cost-effective low frame rate. Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Black-Jack, etc. Comes to put both of these “young-uns” in their place, appealing to history, and can claim to be the superior in BOTH their strengths. (story-telling artistry, AND efficiency/scientific smarts) It’s practically game over, but there’s much more to go. 4th battler needs to show up ominously, like with dark skies and lightning, to DRASTICALLY counter the distinctly family-friendly creators with a dark and twisted angle. Some edgier names that came to mind are Katsuhiro Otomo, (creator of AKIRA, shocking dystopian anime feature film, the first to get traction in USA) or Masamune Shirow, (Creator of Ghost in the Shell, super-philosophical sci-fi action, which in turn influenced The MATRIX and Hollywood in general. Now known for super-hardcore Adult-Only material) But I think the TRUE historical edgelord, the one who has UNDENIABLY influenced the artistic landscape forever, is TOSHIO MAEDA. The man who blatantly defied the Japanese censorship laws with the wildest loophole ever: “Tentacles aren’t genitals!” Anyone who’s ever wondered why tentacles and hentai are a thing, can basically thank Toshio Maeda for that. Hardcore animated shows like “La Blue Girl” and “Urotsukidoji” were the first to ever make their way onto Blockbuster store shelves, and as many an 80’s kid may tell you, the less discerning shelvers and shoppers ended up changing the lives of unsuspecting children forever. Erotic Horror was once the most shocking thing coming from Japan, and it’s weirdly normalized now. To the point that even anime with PG and PG-13 ratings will feature uncomfortable references. Monster Girls, and Futas, and fetishes of all kinds are everywhere! The most talked-about anime of the year is “Interspecies Reviewers.” No one can escape “Rule 34” when googling their favorite cartoon or game characters. And it all begins with Toshio Maeda who spearheaded that cultural shift back in the day. It’s such a perfect fit thematically, the only elephant in the room here is how, or IF ERB would want to portray that. 5th battler: HOKUSAI While most of the Battle Royales end with cool modern guy, (like the Russians ending with Putin, and Directors ending with Michael Bay) Japanese culture values tradition and history, so the final walk-on is the oldest of them all, from the 1700’s. The famous artist HOKUSAI. The Van Gough of Japan. There’s no way you haven’t seen variations of his famous painting “The Great Wave” all over T-shirts and posters. Uni-Clo loves him! His wood-block paintings were the first time an artist from Japan “made waves” on a global scale (Pun intended) depicting life in Japan. (Side note, there’s a big Biopic film coming out about him! Supposed to be 2020, now for 2021) After Toshio’s verse makes us particularly uncomfortable, the Great Wave can come from off screen, and just wash him right away. Hokusai can walk in with the pimp-cane swagger seen in old portraits. He tops the first three rappers in years and historical influence, and can also one-up Toshio’s tentacle hentai with a reference to his own erotic shunga paintings, like “Dream of the Fisherman’s wife.” He himself faced off against restrictive government that outlawed his creativity. All in all, despite heavy punches throughout, I picture it ending on an uplifting wholesome note, about how everyone’s art has a time and place. Japanese culture really emphasizes respect and honor, and while the themes of “Modern vs Traditonal,” and “Family-Friendly vs Edgy Adult” and all kinds of issues around government-sanctioned censorship are perfectly on display here, I can’t imagine any of these guys IRL having a lasting beef with each other. I’m thinking it’s not unlike Stan Lee vs Jim Henson, but no surprise Disney walk-on, because the “Big Bad” part has already come and gone. Thanks to anyone who read this. I am honestly eager to hear your thoughts. Any fans of these artists out there? While I’ve got a lot of my own suggestions for bars and rhymes already written down, I’ll reserve those for future Writer’s Room discussion.

Alvin Franco

I really like your angle on this! Miyazaki NEEDS to be in a battle, and I’m really not fond of the popular “Tim Burton” matchup that’s still breathing somehow. Miyamoto ALSO needs to be in a battle, and while I actually REALLY love the 3 choices you picked, it’s a shame to leave out other influential game developers in favor of focusing on only Japanese names... still I really love the logic behind yours! I wouldn’t be disappointed if this happened. And ABSOLUTELY Musashi deserves to be in a battle. Sorry I don’t know Jin Sakai, no comment there. But how could they NOT eventually feature the first Samurai? I’ve suggested Shigeru Miyamoto vs Hayao Miyazaki before, (Anime vs Video Games) as a 1-on-1, and seen a bit of positive and negative response. But now I think it could culminate up to a 5-way battle royale. Never had a better opportunity than now to get it some traction, and I just spent a few hours trying to explain and justify it below. I wonder if you might have thoughts on that? Good choices on your part though! Nice call!

Ching Shih (the badass historical pirate queen) vs Jack Sparrow Ho Chi Minh vs Richard Nixon

James A. Whitney

There are definitely plenty of non-Japanese game developers that could be included too, I just wanted to try to focus on the theme for this time (if you're reading, ERB, names that immediately come to mind are Cliff Bleszinski, Gabe Newell, Will Wright, and Sid Meier -- Hidetaka Miyazaki from my first suggestion could fit too but I didn't want to mention him twice). Jin Sakai is a very spur of the moment pick -- he's the protagonist from the (extremely) recent game release Ghost of Tsushima, but he does feel like he'd be a good fit for Musashi. Maybe they're too similar, though -- honestly I was just having trouble thinking of a good opponent for Musashi and really wanted to get the name out there. :) I would be 100% okay with Shigeru Miyamoto vs Hayao Miyazaki too! Either as a standalone or the start of a royale. I'll comment on your post below for more talk on that.

James A. Whitney

I really love this idea, especially if we're only going to get one battle with heavy Japanese themes I think they deserve a royale. You also put a lot of thought into the themes and the composition of the battle, great work! :) My only hesitancy would be Toshio Maeda. The subject matter is super controversial to portray, of course, but mostly just because I think he's a bit too esoteric. Everyone knows the influence of his work in the modern day as you said, but I think the actual person will just leave too many people saying "...who?". Masamune Shirow I think would fill the same thematic slot pretty well (darker/edgier influence and long-reaching influence on media today) and is WAY more recognizable to most audiences -- plus they don't have to worry so much about potential backlash on the whole hentai/fetish angle. :P

Leo M. R.

Gary Gygax vs. Shigeru Miyamoto! Tabletop vs. video games!

Leo M. R.

I've always wanted to see Sun Yat-sen in a battle but I can't really figure out a good opponent for him... Sun Yat-sen vs. Peter the Great. Revolutionary founding fathers of humongous polities, with one being a nationalist and the other an imperialist.

Leo M. R.

This is actually pretty hilarious though!

Leo M. R.

Because we need a properly-badass rendition of Genghis Khan: Genghis Khan vs. Alexander the Great, as a serious (i.e. not silly/comedic) match. History's two greatest military conquerors.
