EpicLLOYD has been digging down into a bunch of match-ups that were submitted in the last round of MakeThisBattle! The theme this time around was 'Opposites Attract' so a few of the suggestions relate to that theme. Let's see what Lloyd thought about them...

Rambo vs GLaDOS (submitted by Michael Fairbairn)

First things first, my spellchecker knew who GLaDOS was. Now while that's awesome, albeit a little creepy seeing as that GLaDOS is a AI robot, it doesn't change the fact that I had never heard of this being. Also never heard of Portal. Now that's not always a huge deal if the character is broad enough but we've been getting a lot of these gaming characters lately and I just can't see any of the niche ones ever making the cut. Not when we haven't done Link, or Sonic or some of the other mega hits yet. Many might argue that Rambo is equally as niche (but I'd personally support Mr Rambo) but still accept that even he is probably too concentrated of a character. If anything I'd do Rocky or Sly himself and then a taste of all those characters. Long story short I just don't see it.

Henry Ford vs Karl Marx (submitted by swansong & mblpns)

Now we're talking. This is a great matchup. Both these guys have been flirting in the cut for years and it'd be great to finally get them some light. The father of the assembly line against the father of communism. A man who loved the free market and exploited vs a man who wanted from each what they could give and to each according to what they needed. Fun. A strong strike against this matchup is maybe the U.S. and European centric nature of the men themselves. As I'd like to see us branch out to other parts of the world more; but seeing as they guys were both Titans I do dig it.

BTS vs The Beatles (submitted by Lunarose)

To be honest this matchup would crush. I don't like it, but it would crush. BTS are so huuuuuuge right now and The Beatles have so much name recognition they'll always be a strong choice.  I think this would just hurt my ego a bit. I don't know much about BTS the band but I'm not very moved by such poppy music and besides BTS will always mean Behind the Scenes to me. I guess the macho dude in me has a  hard time taking them seriously. I do love getting a strong Korean presence into the battles though and typically the more I hear a matchup like this the more I end up liking it in the end. It would be expensive to produce for sure that's a plain fact. There must be about 6 guys in BTS and then the four Beatles. That's a lot of people. Maybe too many. Tough call.

Vince McMahon vs Spartacus (submitted by Red Claw)

I really don't understand the matchup. I know these two characters and think each of them has some merit but it seems as though each has much, much better options for adversaries. One led his people to freedom the other is what? A wrestling mogul? Just seems a little weird. I'd body slam this matchup and leave it on the map for dead.

Bugs Bunny vs Sonic the Hedgehog (submitted by J-Star)

I really like this. Two speedy rodents. Two cartoons. Two iconic names in their own right.  What else could you ask for in a battle. In the year that 2020 was, it would have made a great animated option and I don't really see any other way of getting this match up done.  I do think we could come up with interesting ways to animate these guys so that it wasn't a straight rip and we could avoid any copyright issues. Also, because they are both so fast it might be a fun way to justify some kind of fast rapper battle.  Another fun thing is how each of these two is from different generations. Many arguments about Bugs' old and outdated comments and episodes could be made etc. Tons of room for fun cameos as well. Good stuff.

Howard Stern vs Joe Rogan (submitted by Dante Walton)

This is actually really cool. I like both these guys a ton and radio personalities are something we haven't touched. With the broad spectrum of stuff that Rogan does, we could delve into the UFC world and stand up comedy arenas as well. Both very recognizable and successful. Both with very different approaches. I don't see this clawing it's way to the top of the pile for a few years but I do think it has legs.

Orson Welles vs Charlie Chaplin (submitted by Neo)

I gotta be honest. This one is never happening. Whilst the long term option of Mr. Bean vs Charlie Chaplin exists its gonna take something special to replace that as the go to Chaplin option. And there's no way we'd ever sacrifice that for an oddball match like this. There is also the fact that we've already done the Directors battle so choosing the next Director to feature needs to be the right choice. Orson Welles I think might just be one of those characters that, while important, won't see the headlines of a rap battle for a very long time.

"Monk's Hot Takes" - our manager offers some thoughts!

This was a bit of a weird round. Haha. Pairing opposites did flummox some people and ended up pulling together some strange combos. Rambo vs GLaDOS is one such match-up. But it kind of makes me quite sickly but strangely interested in equal measure. McMahon vs Spartacus sounds off (so I can understand Lloyd's reaction) but the idea of a 'real' gladiator type arguing with the guy who champions the 'fake' wrestling world does have something alluring about it. Karl Marx is one big name who hangs around never getting selected despite having all the right credentials. It seems unfair. What is holding us back. Possibly finding the right opponent. I have been content with Robin Hood as his opponent just to lighten the mood. But if we wanna dry things off and go with a more traditional match-up, then Ford is a good shout. I'd say my favorite idea of this bunch is Bugs Bunny vs Sonic. Primarily because I find the typical suggestions for Sonic (like The Flash or Usain Bolt) rather unappealing or maybe just unimaginative somehow. Perhaps those ideas have just been hanging around too long. Equally I've never liked a Bugs Bunny idea. So melding the two together seems fun. But I might feel different tomorrow.

A new round of MakeThisBattle is beginning!!

The theme this time is "21-21 Vision". We are looking for match-ups that feature characters that have some significance to next year - 2021. There may be a new movie, game or tv series coming out. There may be a significant anniversary. Or you might just think we NEED a certain match-up to happen as soon as possible. Or anything that fits that loose remit of being appropriate for release in 2021.

You can always ignore the theme completely if you prefer. But, when selecting the match-ups for feedback we will select 2 or more suggestions that match the theme.

Same rules apply. Seven match-ups in total will be selected. Three suggestions per person. You can post them in the comments below, email them to erbpatreon@gmail.com or post them on the Discord server in the dedicated '#make-this-battle' channel.

Deadline for submissions is... 5pm PT on Saturday 26th December

GladOS suggestion really got me going. Her voice is compelling and very musical. I love a battle with her. Perhaps an apocalyptic season finale that starts with a battle between Artificial Intelligence HAL from 2001 vs GladOS from Portal. Could then turn into a tag team match with Robots on either side. Bishop from Aliens tagging in for HAL. Data from Star Trek tagging in for GllaDOS. Then because I loved the Director battle ending with Michael Bay, we should have Optimus Prime just step on everybody and end the show. At the very least, this makes for a great fever dream.

Power Rangers vs RWBY George Patton vs Boudica Eva Peron vs Princess Diana

Bret Ceren

Tony Soprano vs Tommy Shelby

2021? I got you fam! Abraham van Helsing (Dracula) vs. Geralt of Rivia (the Witcher). The Witcher season 2 is dropping next year and you're gonna wanna tap that well! And I don't need to sell you on van Helsing, do I?

Leo M. R.

The God of War sequel is coming out in 2021 so it's as good an excuse as any to bring Kratos in! Hear me out here... Kratos vs. Wonder Woman? I *know* we've had Wonder Woman on the show before, but come on. The two biggest badasses of modern takes on Greek myth? Gods and godslayers themselves? Wonder Woman being relevant recently thanks to her own film? Gotta happen.

Barbie VS Jem VS Strawberry Shortcake VS Rainbow Brite

This has nothing to do with 2021 specifically, but with the pandemic's end (hopefully) in sight I suggest celebrating two titans of modern medicine: Florence Nightingale vs. Alexander Fleming. Give some love to the nurses and biomedical researchers of history!

levar burton vs anton lavey scheherezade vs rod serling Link vs Cloud Strife

Paul Atreides vs. Prince Adam (He-Man). A new DUNE movie and a new Masters of the Universe movie are both due to be released in 2021. Paul Atreides (Dune) vs. Morphius (The Matrix) and just because it's a pet request of mine: Samus Aran (Metroid) vs Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)

While I'm told this is not accurate, most people under the age of thirty only know Rambo as "screaming gun nut from an old movie nobody saw." NOTE: I'm sure someone will see this comment and know more about Rambo. Please don't inform me, I do not care. It's a REALLY old movie. GLaDOS is way more famous in that demographic, and IMO way cooler.

James A. Whitney

A "REALLY old movie"? It came out in 1982, dude. That's barely even old, much less really old, to say nothing of "REALLY old". The people who are telling you your views are not accurate are correct, the vast majority of people have at least a passing familiarity with Rambo as an action movie staple while many people have no idea who GLaDOS is. I mean I don't get the matchup regardless, but still.

James A. Whitney

Black Widow vs Mata Hari (Black Widow is finally getting her movie in 2021 -- thanks a lot COVID -- and I personally like pairing up fictional vs real characters of the same type) That's all I've got for now. I can't think of anything else happening in 2021 that I know about that's got broad enough appeal.

Terodon

That movie's older than I am. Just to give you some perspective here, when that movie came out, most people didn't know what the internet was. It was basically another world. Don't get me wrong, I do realize my previous statement was unduly harsh - I hear the first movie had a lot to say about Vietnam vets and how they were treated - but a lot of people hear "Rambo" and think "aaaaarh guns boom" like some kind of proto-Doomguy. I get that older movies exist. There are museums of them. But in the cultural sphere, anything that came out before 2000 is basically ancient history.

Erik Bell

2021 is the year Raul Castro is stepping down, ending 62 years of leadership by the Castro Brothers. So maybe Raul and Fidel Castro (or just Fidel) vs. Victor Von Doom? 2021 is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther being excommunicated. Martin Luther (95 theses) vs. Isaac Asimov (three rules of robotics) 2021 is also the anniversary of the Pilgrim-Wampanoag Peace Treaty. So I propose Captain John Smith (history and Pocahontas) vs. Professor John Robinson (Lost in Space)

Paul Atreides (Dune) vs. T.E. Lawrence Usain Bolt vs Michael Phelps in time for the Olympics Aang vs Captain America

Leo M. R.

Luther vs. Asimov as an idea is... intriguing. I have this weird knee-jerk reaction against it but at the same time... my interest is inexplicably piqued.

Leo M. R.

I'm curious as to what cultural sphere you're in, because in mine there are tons of pre-2000 movies that are still hugely relevant. Jurassic Park, Terminator, most of Disney's entire library... Including that little space opera trilogy that begins with 'Star' and ends with 'Wars'. To say Rambo is just some proto-Doomguy is... definitely telling of your own pop culture knowledge. He's a mainstream icon whereas GLaDOS is confined strictly in the gaming space; if you asked 100 random people to identify the two of them I'm willing to bet actual money fewer than 20 will name GLaDOS but at least 60 will name Rambo. And I say this as an under-thirty gamer who's never even seen the films.

John Henry 🔨 vs Jeff Bezos 💻 It could be argued that 2020 was the year of Jeff Bezos. He’s on track to be the first self-made trillionaire. But I think it was just the catalyst. In 2021 he stands to gain so much more. COVID is worse than ever, the current vaccine still tentative. As folks try to return to work as usual, there will be much concern around living wages, outsourcing jobs, and businesses closing. And Jeff Bezos will continue to get richer while replacing working men with automated machines. 💻 Let the steel-driving man of legend take him to task! John Henry who laid down his life in competition against a high tech steam drill, saving the livelihoods of fellow rail workers. Very poignant themes for our era! 🔨

John Crovis

That's... friggin' brilliant.

Peter Parker vs Miles Morales: The new Spider-Man movie comes out December 2021 Jesse Owens vs Dale Earnhardt: Two legends of different types of racing. 70th anniversary of Dale Earnhardt's birth. Princess Peach vs Princess Diana: 60th anniversary of Princess Diana's birth

Shigeru Miyamoto vs ?????? https://youtu.be/hQaRBOI-9kg I don’t know who this living legend should go against. But with Nintendo World coming out in 2021, it really is a big year for Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario and Zelda 35 year anniversary. He’s already won what is essentially the Nobel Prize of Japan in 2019. Now we have this wholesome AF video where he’s giving a tour of the newly built theme park. It feels like Walt Disney or something. One day when video games and entertainment are all holographic Augmented Reality, this will be footage that people show to commemorate this man, much like we have black-and-white footage of Walt Disney introducing us to Disneyland. I’ve suggested Shigeru Miyamoto vs Hayao Miyazaki before. As in Anime vs Video Games. I’ll do it again! Or even Shigeru Miyamoto vs Masahiro Sakurai. Father of beloved Nintendo characters, against the director of Smash Bros, who is currently dominating the scenes and memes with the Ultimate VG crossover franchise.

There are several things from Welles’s career in addition to the films he directed that could be referenced in a battle. War of the Worlds, wine commercials, magic tricks, Muppets, Transformers…

Edward Snowden vs Neo (A new Matrix movie is releasing next year) Hatsune Miku vs Max Headroom Ryu (Street Fighter) vs Tyler Durden and the Narrator (Fight Club)

John Lennon vs Bob Marley-just a thought

Scheherazade vs Rod Serling is a really clever pull!!! 1001 Nights narrator against Twilight Zone guy. Lol! But I didn’t even know who they were when I first read it... not exactly clickbait, but kudos for coming up with that!

Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop) vs. The Mandolrian. Not sure if he has a name, but the show is crazy popular & since Cowboy Bebop has alive action movie coming to Netflix and not are space bounty hunters...

OmgWtfLolFtwBrb

Spongebob Squarepants vs. Homer Simpson Spongebob has a new show coming out this year called Camp Coral & last I checked Simpson's is still going hard!
