Amy, Please Stop Stealing My Content (Patreon)

My publishing income is my livelihood, and since May, I've hardly been making enough to scrape by. I know that you are a subscriber here. I know that you get validation from your online friends when you provide them my content for free. Amazon has threatened to shut down my account because it keeps finding my content published on the forum you use to share my content for free. I have a deal with Amazon where I agreed that my books will not be available anywhere but Amazon.

And people aren't signing up for my Patreon because you're leaking all of my Patreon Exclusives.

Please stop. You aren't Robin Hood. You're not some cool pirate. You're just hurting someone.

I don't necessarily want to link to a forum that contains all of my content for free on it. And I think it's a forum for pirates. Reporting would likely do nothing.

Nikki, if you haven't already reported these thefts to Amazon, they should be made aware that your content is being stolen and published on Amazon. From now on, I'll read your stories on Patreon more closely. I usually only read a few other authors, but if I see anything that even resembles the way you write, I will let you know. By the way, are all of your books copyrighted? If so, then these thefts are stolen intellectual property, which is definitely a crime.

Copyright is automatic. Registering a copyright is a good idea when suing, but it's not required. Unfortunately, copyright law, at least in the USA, is primarily for rich people as the plaintiff usually pays their own court costs. It also requires being able to identify the real identity of the defendant, which may not be possible (although it should be easier if they're a paying Patron.) Nikki seems to be in a position where the copyright violations are hurting her, but at least in the short term suing may hurt worse. Her content is not being stolen and published on Amazon. It is being stolen and published elsewhere. This breaks her Kindle Unlimited exclusivity agreement, which is why Amazon are being nasty. Well, nastier than usual.

Even if you posted it, most on here would gladly still pay your patreon. Heck I do and I buy your content on Amazon because it is that good! Also I do not want to see an amazing person like you have to cut back on writing due to pirates. We could go over there as Nikki's army!

Both this Amy person and the website publishing your content without permission. See if you can get a copyright lawyer who will take the case on a contingency fee basis. When Gary Gygax had hobbits and mithril from JRR Tolkien's works without permission, Tolkien's estate's lawyer sent him a cease and desist letter telling him what he could and couldn't use. The estate didn't even have to take Gary to court.

No A.J. You are missing the issue. Yes people here pay for the content. But if you and everyone else go the pirate site, you will encouraging the behavior They want foot traffic. Enjoy Nikki’s beautiful work and art here where she provides it to us in return for both earning a living & sharing her creative work with grateful individuals who support her. The link even existing is a threat to Nikki’s livelihood. There is also no reason for you or any of us to see the stolen work, we already pay for access to it, seeing it just encouraging pirating. I’m an actor, I get residuals when a film I’m in is viewed, if someone pays to see it and then pirates providing it for free, and I post it saying “stop stealing u r hurting me” than it’s a matter of time before the link gets out and I don’t get to earn enough to d what I love and go back to waiting table and there for getting to work on less projects. (It’s not an exact equivalency but the point should be the same)

Nikki, I am very sorry you are dealing with piracy and a disloyal fan who steals your work. I hope this message reaches Amy and she understands that she has been hurting you and your ability to earn a living doing what you love. As a professional artist/actor I can relate to the damage piracy causes. I sincerely hope your problem gets resolved quickly. Big fan of your work. there should be a mechanism for reporting a fraudulent account to patreon. not that they would do much the site hosting the pirated material will have a public ip address, and you can notify their hosting provider. suing someone for something like this would be expensive and unlikely to recoup even your own legal costs. not to mantion incredibly stressfull and time consumniing write her into a story lol

Can't you terminate their membership or request it through patreon because of what they are doing?
