In 2006, despite the unstoppable ascendancy of liberal-capitalist hegemony in the post-Soviet context, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), completed a successful revolution in one of the poorest countries in the world, overthrowing a nearly 250 year old autocratic monarchy aligned with the United States. We trace a brief chronology of the revolutionary conflict, then discuss how the Maoists were so successful in recruiting the masses to their side, particularly women, peasants, and indigenous groups. Your hosts are Julian Feeld and Jon Gabrus.
