A satisfying and bittersweet end to an introductory Factorio journey. Feels good to finally beat the tutorial. Here's my overall review of the game:

I'm a goal-oriented person, so it was great to play Factorio with a tangible goal of building the rocket and beating the game. The game provides a ton of organic and interesting short-term goals too, such as producing the next tier of science or fixing a resource shortage. Fixing an iron, copper, or plastic shortage was immensely satisfying, and so was finding a better factory design, though the latter only happened twice. It wasn't great to realize that so many production problems had the exact same solution: just make a column of assemblers. It was organized, it was efficient, and it had zero reason to improve.

I don't enjoy sandbox games whatsoever, and I find no joy from optimizing or expanding my factory for the hell of it. I want to complete the goal in front of me, then move on to the next one. I like when my goals feel official, like 'beat the game' or 'defend yourself from the biters', not arbitrary or self-imposed, unless I'm doing something nobody else in the entire world has done before. I would enjoy a separate scenario where a mega factory would be necessary for solving my problems, but it definitely wasn't necessary here. I definitely wouldn't enjoy using bots unless I was forced to use them.

I wish I had set up a campaign where the biters were a much more intense threat, like in a deathworld. I grew up playing Starcraft: Brood War and grew my channel on Bloons TD Battles, so I'm built for RTS games. Factorio seems like it could have some game mode where it becomes an RTS, which would be extremely exciting to me. If there's some sort of 1v1 Factorio mod where the goal is to destroy the other player's "base crystal" or something would be absolutely awesome. Or a mode where one person tries to speedrun the game and the other person tries to kill them first.

Learning the systems like logistics, oil, trains, and nuclear was a ton of fun. They felt easy to learn, but supported a wealth of ideas and ways to improve my ability to use them. Playing this campaign was necessary so I could learn the ins and outs of the game, and the systems feel intricate enough that they could support a variety of more advanced gameplay loops that I'd be interested in. I'd be down to do some Factorio follow-up in a couple months, especially if I can figure out a way to make Factorio YouTube-viable.

It's too early to rate the game as a whole, but I'd rate my time spent as an 8/10. I hope you all enjoyed watching, can't wait for the next series!

I loved this series, such a bittersweet end. Hopefully Terraria will just just as entertaining and fun!

I was introduced to factorio by markiplier's death world series, which I recommend if you want to get an idea of how intense things can get. I hope to see you return to factorio in the future with the same goal, but two changes: death world for more intense enemies, and lazy bastard achievement to disable hand crafting. This is my personal favorite way to play the game and I trust you'd be able to make it entertaining. A note for next time: factorio gets dark at night, be kind to your viewers, use lights!

Loved the series!!! For an RTS version of this game ive seen something called biter battles on youtube. I think this is close to what your thinking, though no idea how youd set that up. Good to know what you would enjoy in a future go of this game. Combing the deathworld mode thats in the game for the harder biters, and a mod to help with the complexity and need/motivation to build a better base would be good. Im not sure what mod would work best with a deathworld style run, but many mods have a bunch of new weapons as well and would be a bunch of fun. Im not sure how you know you hate using bots when youve never tried them. Kinda like if if you diceded youd hate using belts, and made factories only using inserts to move things. Id love to see you give them ago, because to me its one of best parts of the game. I hope we can revisit factorio another time, but im looking forward to the next game!

Glad you enjoyed factorio! There's a few things I'd like to see you try out (bots, both logi and construction, power armor, some of the other military stuff like landmines, etc), but honestly, just, do what you have fun with and I hope you don't feel forced into playing a certain way, that just kills the fun. Hope to see you play more factorio in the future, and maybe, just maybe, you'll play some off camera for your own enjoyment!

Honestly this series was a triumphant way to launch a Patreon

"It wasn't great to realize that so many production problems had the exact same solution: just make a column of assemblers." I'll say right now; you would never be able to get away with 'just' doing that as the difficulty gets set higher and the training wheels come off. Biters are really, really good at punishing inefficiency (some may say they're incredibly efficient at it) and there definitely comes a point where if you keep trying to expand an inefficient base instead of fix the existing one to solve your problem you'll soon find yourself in an endless sea of biters, as a corpse. Also there's a TON of great stuff and options you missed out on, looking forward to you someday discovering those for real.

maybe some achievement hunting could be YouTube viable? this game has some interesting achievements

The reason I liked bots so much is because it helps with the theme of “Automate Everything”. I don’t care as much about the logistic bots but the construction bots really make the game shine. You can choose to destroy huge areas, you can blueprint builds ahead of time and when you have materials the bots will fill everything in for you. It’s just another layer of convenience that makes it even more easy to optimize and continue to the next progression. To each their own though, as long as people are having fun the game should be played however you want

Logan

Oh yeah forgot about power Armor, it was kind of funny seeing someone run around without exoskeletons for speed the entire time

John Wayne

Car 5 stopping the train was awesome!

Aliensrock

That is interesting to know! I think the very next thing I'd want to do in Factorio is start a campaign that is at a much higher difficulty, just to see what ideas of mine get punished and what ones don't. Is it as simple as turning all the biter related sliders to max?

Peteydog

you could've hopped in the rocket when you put the tank in

“Factorio seems like it could have some game mode where it becomes an RTS” I think there are 3 options that help to fit that. For vanilla there is death world settings and the wave defense scenario. Death world is probably the more interesting of the 2 as it has more complex problems to solve: expansion, pollution management, “oh no 70% of my iron is turning into ammo”, etc. Wave defense is good if you want to fight biters and have a timed object, since you will eventually become over run. Both of these will heavily punish you for not having a good efficient factory, as more and more resources get diverted to just creating defenses. For mods I have heard of a PvP game mode where both players are on the other side of a river, and creating science allows you to spawn biter waves on your opponents side. There is also vanilla PvP, in which you race to complete some goal(launch N rockets, get N resources, get N oil, get N kills), but it doesn’t fully fit the RTS vibe imo, since sometimes you can straight up ignore what your opponent is doing.

somewhat related, there is a game called Mindustry - similar to factorio when it comes to getting and manipulating resources, but much more of a typical tower defense, with some elements of gemcraft (terrain & path manipulation), and there are also attack maps, where you actively send out and control units to attack the enemy's base. very fun, can't recommend enough - it's like 6$ on steam, and pretty sure it's free on itch.io.

That's one thing, but not your only option: 1: There's two major types of biome, the grassy plains you were on and a red desert style. The red desert has far, far fewer trees as should be guessable and this gets rid of much of your best natural source of pollution absorption. If trees aren't absorbing your pollution then biter nests are instead, so trying to simply belch out a lot more pollution to solve your current problem is going to double the amount of biters they attack you with and double the speed they evolve at. 2: The terrain itself is a notable factor, if you have a map that's quite open on all sides then it becomes that much more difficult to defend yourself, also if you don't have lots of trees near you then that's the same as having no safety net to save you. 3: The ore frequency and sizes cannot be overlooked. If you can sit in your original starting area with a happy and dumb smile on your face then that's all you have to defend, but if you have to look greater distances away for fresh ore then you don't have that luxury and can't simply buggy over to a base to protect it if it wasn't done so properly already. These are known as "Trainworld" settings and it forces you to be that much more careful with your existing resources than simply throwing more of them at a problem to fix it if acquiring more of them isn't a trivial walk in the park. 4: What causes biter evolution. Time, spawner destruction, pollution. If you don't like the idea of a timer hanging over your head or want to punish a "slap down 10 more assemblers to fix the problem!" playstyle, you can certainly nudge the evolution by pollution a few notches up in exchange for lowering the time related one a bit. This combined with Deathworld settings (200% base size + frequency) makes pumping out more pollution instead of fixing existing pollution problems incredibly deadly for you. 5: Not really a map setting but something I wanted to note specifically anyway, two very commonly used goals for the game beyond simply "launch the rocket" are the achievements - many of the achievements are quite interesting and force you to think differently about an existing problem, and there's automating space science. Launching a satellite into space is how you acquire the 7th science type and creating a base that can produce all 7 science types at a rate of 100 science per minute (that is, 100 of each science type produced and used in labs, per minute) without instantly breaking if the player turns their back for a few seconds is the typical goal that all the famous Factorio youtubers do regardless of whatever other special challenge settings they have going on. After all, you could theoretically sit in your starting area and mine and craft almost everything you need by hand if you were crazy enough and all you wanted to do is launch one rocket, so few use it as the ultimate goal after their first playthrough. There are other options such as being able to individually tinker with how fast pollution is absorbed via different settings and number of cliffs (which if anything should be turned off, they are evil) and the research queue which should always be enabled by default, but for the most part I wouldn't recommend touching them unless you know what you're doing. Factorio's a superbly well balanced game, the default settings are great for letting a new player familiarise themselves with the game without punishing them too much, but if you have standard deathworld settings with evolution via pollution turned up then you'd better channel the spirit of Greta Thunberg and fast, "or else".

Mindustry is also open source I'm pretty sure. I was able to download a like 2 week old build from GitHub and make it work with literally zero knowledge requirements beyond unzipping and clicking on a Java file

Evelyn

Car 5 survived on EXACTLY 5 health, poetic one could say. It truly is the chosen one

Jerry_the_B

"I would enjoy a separate scenario where a mega factory would be necessary for solving my problems..." Oh, our sweet summer child, do I have the Space Exploration + Krastorio 2 + Rampant modpack for you :D. But that would be really tedious 😅

Ben Byerly

Echoing someone farther up who recommended Mindustry. In a nutshell, it is RTS PvP Factorio. Maybe worth checking out Appreciate all your great work and good humor! Cheers!

LegitGopnik

Impressive to beat the game without crafting a lamp. They should make that an achievement, but it'd be too hard.

Noel P.

Awesome series, hope more of it comes in future

Noel P.

Yep, I'm few days of game-play in SE+K2, awesome shit

MrAgril

wish you went into robotics but still really enjoyable series

Valence Sellers

I’m not of the nomination tier, but I would like to out the game Mindustry out there for anyone who is. It has similar factory building vibes to factorizo, but is a tower defense game. Definitely something Tyler would like going off of this review.

Doggywoof

If I had money for it, I would definitely nominate Mindustry.

FrostiDragon

Absolutely seconding Mindustry based on the review!

Doggywoof

This was enjoyable series, thanks for making it! I just wish you launched car 5 on the rocket, though.

Simon Berglund

It was so fun! Really entertaining to watch you learn and find your own way to solve the problems that show up.(I have 99 problems and and 90 are red circuits)

Pentium4POWER

Dan the man!!! What a great series. You could be a Factorio-main creator and I would still watch

Frederik Dekov Buur

There's an achievement to complete the game while hand crafting a very small amount, definitely would be fun to see you do that, because it forces you to automate litterly everything

greensig

I think that's a fun achievement, but probably not as fun for viewers. It's pretty damn slow and doesn't add much besides, "You need to expand your mall"

Jonathan Brouwer

I'm impressed with how clean Tyler's main base was. Also a bit disappointed he didn't get any more of the advanced weapons

Yug87

If you do come back to this I hope you find the train artillery, was really expecting you to continue your crusade but with trains. And they’ve finally added it to vanilla but there are mods that allow for space exploration and satellites

Max Biesheuvel

Would be cool to see some more advanced weapons. Really enjoyed the series!!!

Richy

This was such a great series

symphony

Amazing series. I would have loved to see his reaction to helper bots and requester chests.

ETG

You should revisit the game when the Expansion comes out, that way it will also be YT viable since everyone will be talking about it

Plantera

I hope hes gonna revisit the game once the DLC "Spage Age" come out.

Henry Attey

this series is one of the main reasons I subbed, I'd love to see a return to it one day!!
