This past summer I wrote an essay about the church and denomination I grew up in, but I didn't end up publishing it. The results of the election gave me the push I needed to finish putting it all together. I hope it helps.

No one said you have to live on Bob.

That zeal turned to vicious self-righteousness and condemnation is all too familiar. My family is still feeling the loss of community and identity, but we know we can't be evangelicals anymore.

I’m marrying my partner soon and we’ve met with the officiant and are having to make choices about what to say about what we believe to all these people who raised us. Thank you for sharing your meditation on all that’s going on in the church, it means a lot to my own thought process

This is an experience far removed from my own (no church, atheist parents & visibly gender non-conforming from a young age) but it really moved me. I think I understand a lot of people better after listening to this. Well done.

Thank you so much for this. I also attended a religious (Baptist) college before lighting out and the ending of your post gutted me. It’s beyond painful that people who were your community growing up turn out to not support you, and in the name of God. Just thanks again and thanks for this podcast.

Truly this is the worst of all possible worlds. But you are FAR from the worst of all possible Joshs.

That was a very beautiful essay.

Wow.! That was really powerful. I relate to the feeling of looking out at the people in your church and wondering if they would really support you if they knew what you think now. Regardless of denomination, we all love nice old church ladies.

I've learned so much about the Evangelical world and way of thinking from TWOAPW over the last year, but this really brought the loss and impossible decisions home for me. Feels like understanding that is an essential part of meeting the moment we're in now.

Incredible. Truth spoken very much to power. Powerful music choice, as well. Hearing that opening piano lick put me right back into the same place you described.

This was moving and direct and perfectly attuned to the moment. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Drew Parker

Thank you for sharing this, it's very courageous of you.

Thank you for this essay, it reflected a lot of my feelings as a Dordt grad who grew up and out of this same milieu

I Love Brian Alford's Bible Corner

I'm so glad that I left Christianity without much hurt or difficulty. Just a casual, "Oh, I probably didn't ever believe that, did I?"

I wanna marry a lighthouse keeper and keep him company

This essay was very much on my mind the other day when I saw a screening of Paul Schrader's "Hardcore" (1979). George C. Scott's Calvinist Michigander businessman matter-of-factly explaining "TULIP" to a sex worker, with the confident and dismissive air of a member of the elect, felt true to what you described. I would love to hear your take on the movie (regarding its movieness as well as its theology).

The Cube of Orbus

Well presented, argued, and relayed. As well as emotionally connecting. Thank you for sharing.
