hi friends, josh here with a brief request for you all. as a long-ish running show, by now we've developed "bit shorthand" where we as hosts reference long-running bits with the expectation that the audience will remember the callback. however, as we continue to gain new listeners (hello and thank you!) i want to balance those references with keeping things legible to newcomers as they arrive.

as such, i'm wondering what bits/jokes we commonly use which most entertain and/or baffle you. my longer-term hope is to clip the origins of those moments and perhaps animate or otherwise reimagine them in a way that is fun and engaging both for long-time listeners and those who aren't familiar with the show. given that you're reading this on our patreon right now, i imagine you're fairly well equipped to help us figure this stuff out.

please sound off in the comments with the twoapw bits of all time, and don't hesitate to use the like button to upvote stuff that you think should be in contention. thanks for your help!

The tiniest country boy...

ThatMeatGuy

The get the stupidest smile on my face every time a horse comes up becaaue I know what happens next...

misterr

I am the caller from the first anniversary episode who called about Average New Mexico Man. Still my favorite bit of yours by far.

Momoka

malanga

LogalogJack

Leather bar and “whose children ARE they??” are in my daily lexicon

Kyra

AJ converting to Southern Baptism is probably my favourite

Jonii

The bit of losing listeners from countries after disparaging them is a good one.

Juan Herrera

- Goku eating too much - Alan Wake narration - it's the pig - thief is too dark - malanga - kind of a short lived deep cut but da jokah baby

Ariel Diaz

Brian A) being Catholicphobic and B) insulting various European ethnicities

Lena Harty

Josh saying "That's right Brian." pretty much exclusively after Brian says something insane. And also "IT'S TAPE!"

Addison Han

I always love hearing about some Canadian excellence.

Cameron Black

The variations of the "who's children are they?" are always funny to me Who are these children coming down? Who are these bildren buming bown? Who are these children coming... up?

Catfoot13

For like a year if I wanted to make myself laugh I'd just think the words "He hwat!" Or "My name is Alan Wake, I'm a writer." So those both seem like solid contenders. Whit's various Oh sounds and the time he nearly crashes his car are also pretty up there for me. For interstitial bits I think you gotta include Dr Samuel Bultch D.D.S and the various pope's milk ads. And of course you should include any mention of immersive sims such as Thief and Thief 2.

Robin

The bit where years of Whit’s Endless Summer interstitials finally resolve. As a (raised-Catholic but always radio listening) nerd, that segment was a humdinger.

Kyle Cassidy

And a spinoff of Alan Wake narration, the "Into the Woods" leitmotif.

Mira McDonald

Nobody gets naked, they must become nude

零 Rei

“the hated Dutch”

Nathan Woods

Brian's opinions of the Dutch. Scrub Daddy Goku inflation

Ciara Rhiannon

oh hey AJ says it in the new episode lol

RBeacon

and by extension, AJ's concern about losing that country as an audience

Bryson Lambes

It's been a while since we got it, but, '***chocolate bar***'

Ceru

Who are these bits coming down??

Ilian Petit

It's one that's only been used parcimoniously but I love the Kremble Grenton bit

RBeacon

- Ong's Hat - Non-Odyssey interstitial continuity (the exploits of Tony Ditty, Dr. Samuel Bultch DDS/What's The Buzz?, Kirk Cameron, Da Pope) - the works of David Cage - Horse Mourner and/or the land mine drop - older/less frequent drops like Malanga, I'm Coming, Good Idea! - Legs are coming soon - assessing whether something is an ImSim or not

Ariel Diaz

Thought of another one: Broadway's back!

La Saico Bol

AJ’s 🐎↗️ “It’s the 🐖” “Mel’s 🤰”

Brock

Not a multi episode bit, but I wish "that's good Josh" stayed on the soundboard. It's the pig. Jesus' droopy taint

Hmmmm

More like Grossman! Broadway being back. And of course, “I’m c(o/um)ming!”

Hmmmm

The simplicity of this bit makes it maybe my favorite.

sinesynced

The "WHY am I PERSECUTED" soundboard gets me every time lol

cowboyrococo

its been a while but getting your thang stuck in the pipe organ SFX is a classic

LadyKnightTheBrave

Other people have said it but I love **Chocolate bar** and he hwat also Balaga are very good. Anything that's been on that soundboard for awhile is probably a classic.

Zipzapzop

More and more are saying this

Leo Curtis

"...and I'm Mickey Mouse!"

Lewis Morgan

I also enjoyed the joker bit

Lewis Morgan

I also enjoy the rarer "{LINE} altogether" (pause) (all 3 lads repeat {LINE})

Hazel Rafter

Seconding the Leather Bar, both because it was from one of the first WOAPW episodes I saw, and also because its one of those bits that goes from funny, to not funny, to REALLY funny again. Silver and Bronze medals to "Its The Pig" and "He Hwat?!"

Tay

I liked in the Alan wake episode when elevator music would just fade in anytime there was an extended discussion of Alan walking through the woods

Carara

There was also "Hands are coming soon" in Shrimp Jesus, it nearly broke me

P.A.L.

I'm a big fan of what I refer to as "Ominous Musical Summoning", the bit where when you guys mention something like a person being in the woods and then music from "into the woods" plays. Or how in the MGS episode the theme for MGS3 kept haunting the discussion of climbing stairs.

Carter Kriss

i feel like Ong's Hat is referenced just frequently enough to be worth recognizing here but so infrequently that it would be confusing to new listeners

Carter Kriss

leather bar is the PERFECT pull for this

Carter Kriss

leather bar is so perfect for this because it's so funny and so completely inscrutable out of the original context

Erik

It's the P.I.G.

Jude Wilding

Size of an average human mother threw me for a bit

Zathomir

the temptation caused by joggers

Nenna

AJ's horse corner for sure, but also whit's various "ah!" Sound effects and "it's the pig"

Amy Godliman

I’m not a vocal stims kinda person but the Mario-pope’s “free me from my prison, wahoo!” broke through.

Amy Godliman

But fan of all your vibes based impressions, the various Alans Wake, Mario-pope, nasally Kirk Cameron, and such.

E-Sarge

Standouts for me are the horse corner and the tiniest (blank) I watched Heathers the Musical off-Broadway for the first time this week, and when it reached Lifeboat, I just kept hearing AJ's inflection on "the tiniest lifeboat" and laughing to myself

Jam Life

X is *too dark*, an immersive sim much like theif and theif 2

DuosAngel

Brian living on a houseboat

Michael Notkin

Honestly, I really enjoy when you use the growing pool of audio clips, particularly when it requires a long or awkward setup to get there. Some that come to mind are the classic WES ones like "he hwat", the uncorking sound, or George Barkley riding the horse. "It's the pig" has definitely become a relatively recent favorite clip.

Red Ash VA

Nothing will beat New York’s least fuckable man. I don’t know about callbacks to this but it certainly is iconic. And I second the tiniest country boy Brian’s Dobson being sexy Whit or is it the other way round?

LogalogJack

I think about The Adventure Of Odyssey and his amazing rendition of 4’33” at least once a week

SpongeBob floating

"That's right, yournamehere" is part of my vocabulary now

Boya

Brian being racist to europeans, AJ's Horse Corner, the houseboat studio

Logan

Leather bar, goku not being able to eat another bite, and things being different from Thief and Thief II solely because they aren't too dark

The Dude

Big fan of Belushi confusion

SharkSteaks

The interstitial for your Candide episode sums it up pretty well. Also, horse corner.

Tyler

With the very occasional "That's WRONG Brian"

notanimal

Number one with a bullet: AJ’s Horse corner. Runner up: It’s the Pig. Honorable Mention: He hwhaat?? I’m surprised at the diversity of responses here! All the bits are good!!!

Robert Young

The unfinished Sondheim musical about bees. "Do you like jazz?" I think there's been at least one callback to it, not sure counts as a running gag, but at least once a month my brain decides to throw "The living Bi-BEL" at me.

Isopod-Gal

Appending any and all use of "the millenium" with "the *will*enium"

Ben Ferber

One-off but Indiana jokes skeet skeet is forever in my head

Adri M

It’s the PIG 🐽

Elizabeth Power

I love trying to keep track of all the accumulating bits in this podcast. Don’t forget that Broadway is back. It isn’t even a joke, but I think it’s important for the audiences to know that Josh is from Grand Rapids, Michigan because it would explain why laughter ensues every time something is from there. Also making fun of Catholicism and calling AJ a dirty papist

Elizabeth Power

I remember initially being confused by “I’m coming” and the confusion about John Belushi.

Red Ash VA

I’ve used it to introduce not one but two friends to the pod…. Just threw them in the deep end

Fabian Öhlin

Yes, but at the same time, I find it self-explanatory.

Gwendingus

Playing the song from into the woods very quietly any time it comes up

Jared Hawkins

It's an interstitial, but the Catholic songs that all end with "don't" get me every time

Freya

The Horse Mourner bit is easily my favorite pay off for having a bit

Axel Ottel

They couldn’t find the Thief mention because it's too dark!

Naho Yuzu

EASILY THE NORMAN JAYDEN BIT. It's really old but I feel like its when you all really hit your stride and I catch myself doing it regularly.

GRosen

AJ’s horse corner, The Nozzle voice

Curtis F.

"He H-what?" Is an all time classic for me, the one I'm most tempted to say in day to day life and have to stop myself. "What is this? a leather bar?" is also a classic, though a more short lived one of course. Those left behind episodes are also just some of my favorites

Curtis F.

My mom also loves saying "The tiniest country boy"... (we a family of fans, me and my parents all went to the most recent live show together)

Suzanne

I truly don’t know if this is a bit or not but Josh saying “that’s RIGHT, Brian” tickles me.

Suzanne

Oh I should have read through the comments before posting because same. Hon mention is Josh or Brian saying “I love/like it” ironically

Edward Cardall

I maybe doesn't have the longevity of others but I always liked the arc where Brian was replaced with Mickey Mouse. Scrub Daddy also sorely missed. The one I never understood was 'It's tape.'

Elizabeth Power

My favorite version of the leather bar joke is at the end of I think the second Kirk Cameron movie episode where they all keep saying “what is this?” every time there is a list of names and avoid saying “a leather bar.” Then, at the very end, after they have all said their names and the whatever they think the point of it is someone says “Kirk Cameron? The apocalypse? What is this? A leeeft Behind Movie?”

Madcat

Same with "don't WORRY ABOUT IT".

mimsycast

The werner herzog impression

David

All of them, but more specifically: - He Hwhaat? - *pop* aaahhhhh! - ...They're gone! - Horse corner - maybe not a bit, but the running theme music between interstitials

Camoose the Uncrackable Egg

With the self-destuct, the reason you can't just turn it off and in is because it's not some big explosive, it's putting the reactor into an overload by removing cooling. So, if you take too long I doing it the reactor can't really unoverload once it's passed a certain point. Also Weaver was the whose that? of the cast. Going in cold at the time you'd expect the captain to be the hero, so when he dies it's even more of a shock.

It's-Mees

My favorite is no doubt goku inflation, just because a reference to it can just be something like "but just when you think it's x, it can always y a little more"

It's-Mees

I've also been saying "thief or perhaps thief 2" and "he whaaat??" in my daily life, but goku inflation is still my favorite. Idek when or how it started but I love it

Alex

"Its the pig" is just hilarious at every corner

It's-Mees

I think AJs horse corner isn't even striking me as a bit anymore, it just reads as normal to me idk if that's good or bad

Laura Platt

"It's the pig" is probably the one that had infected my own vocal stims the most, and "legs are coming soon" is an all timer!

StephieF

The Von Trapp Family Singers!

Elizabeth Power

Even just the phrase, one-sided phone call with phone call pronounced Like That is fantastic

lk

the Chicago Pope monstrosity. both hilarious and utterly nauseating.

RGBrazberry

So, the leather bar bit is definitely one of my favorites, but I also have to admit that this is despite having no clue what it means. What's the original context of it so I can finally properly understand it?

Tone Bug

“And BOY are my arms tired!” My favorite bit across a handful of episodes. Shortish running but great

Eden Balance

Horse corner is one of my favorite bits ever, everyone's reactions to it kill me. The "what is this? A leather bar?" Also gets me. Can't forget "its the pig" tho

Bex

FARK's Foobies...

pumpkin

I've gone back just to listen to all the Ongs Hat bits. What a crazy thing for AJ to come home to. I also am not a Broadway knower, so even though I assume it's a Covid thing, I don't really know what Broadway is Back is a reference too, but it works every time

Elizabeth Power

I know a little bit about Broadway things, and yeah, it was a reference to all of the shows reopening post Covid, but it kind of became a dark joke at one point because a lot of shows had to have understudies or be canceled because of Covid anyway.

Nick S.

"It's the pig"

pumpkin

What a nightmare. I'm glad that they closed down, because my mom was going to travel to New York that week and she only didn't because her shows shut down.

Ben Hunt

Oh I have the tiniest arms in the village

LogalogJack

It was one of the Kirk Cameron movies—Left Behind, maybe? Brian kept interrupting the discussion by listing off the male characters’ names because they were just eccentric and weirdly masculine enough to sound like frequent patrons of a leather bar.

Noah

“That’s *right*, Brian”

diezelzwerg

WHOSE CHILDREN ARE THESE!?!?!

Matt Bornemann

The concept of immersive sims, as a bit (as opposed to the immersive sim as a genre)

Tony Ditty

Lots of great suggestions, but one from years back I am not seeing. Crypto Brian shilling his new Pop Coin. That rare and valuable token, as scarce as the show’s recent references references to it. Asked a broker friend of mine about it, he said he never heard of it. Shows you how much he knows.

Drew Rebhorn

He hwat “I’m coming” It’s the pig

Taylor Neu

The references to joggers always crack me up, especially because another of my favourite podcasts has a similar bit, albeit from a different source. Every time you guys reference joggers, I say to myself "but consider the bra joggers more closely." Real If Books Could Kill heads will know. Other faves include the leather bar bit, especially when it just trails off into you guys shouting "what is this?" Whose children are they has me laughing every time, too.

Chapo Bath House

It took me so long to realize it was a bit tbh

Magpie

I do love "when someone dies their name changes to I'm Dead" just because of how stupid it is. Think about it a lot

Magpie

Also love "GOOD IDEA!"

Casey Hill

Anytime thief and thief 2 are brought up which is... Often

Sewing Savage

Big fan of the soundboard bits, I love the uncorking sound and It's the pig. Also theif is too dark is a classic.

David

Forgot to mention "it's the pig"!

Nietopyr

The slow reveal of who had written that glowing review of the Nostalgia Critic

Elizabeth Power

It’s not even really a bit, but I love it when you say “who is this for” because sometimes it’s for me!

Patrick Shaw

The tiniest… anything. I’m here for it. And Inflation Goku always makes me uncomfortable. Aj’s Horse corner is an obvious top spot though.

Cão Errante

Honestly, the thing that threw me the most when I joined (and still throws me now) was not repeated bits, it’s the odyssey stuff. Adventures in odyssey?? Idk what it’s called. The whit’s endless summer? I was not here from the beginning, and when I joined about half of your eps were of that and the other half were normal texts. I do not have any context for what that is. I have tried many times to listen to those episodes but I bounce out very quickly from complete lack of context. I think more recently you’ve briefly explained that to a guest, and also I think it was briefly referenced in an explanatory way in the veggietales episode, so I now know that it’s like a religious children’s media series, like a cartoon or something? But that doesn’t really help me access the episodes at all. Tho it would also get really boring for the folks who do know if you explained everything every time, so 🤷 maybe some info links in the description so folks who do not have context for that very long running series can pick up some basics?

Stu Strange

"What is this..... a leather bar?" holds a special place in my heart.

Lucas Livingstone

This. The casual professionalism of it catches me off guard and makes me laugh every god damn time

Kay Bien

This is a good example…. I have no idea where “he hwat” comes from and have been meaning to ask.

Michael Notkin

I can't remember what episode of Whit's Endless Summer it was originally from. It had to have been early, because that bit has been around for a while. I highly recommend any newcomers to the Patreon go through the back catalog of Whit's Endless Summer. They're very entertaining and are the orgin of a lot of the recurring bits. I like to go through them all every once in a while

Aesurah

nono door is it from there being a bit in the show where Whitt says no you cant go thru that door or just a good one you lot came up with ? And Thief ... just because I love it - you guys should play the Mod the Black Parade. Its Dark AND it has a Horse in it. oh and I remember once you guys saying Jake from QAA is just their AJ.... you really should get him on a Whitt show, a crossover with his Indy knockoff character in your interstitials would rock

Thom Coté

Not sure if it qualifies as a 'bit' but my favorite soundboard drop is *pop* "auugh"

Aleks Lotz

‘Get Low’ to the Indiana Jones theme lodges itself in the front of my mind for days at a time

Chapo Bath House

Beast Week! AJ accidentally predicting Oddessy plots

Relkia

horse corner goku inflation "in the heights" drop

Keith Campbell

… The Nozzle anytime the media in question references Jesus speaking

Em Gravesong

Ong's Hat. Maybe it's for the heads, but the more obtuse, inane, and/or tangential the invocation is, the more it kills me.

Em Gravesong

As someone living near GR, highly specific geographic references always get me.

Em Gravesong

"Dead X. X is dead." Has become a vocal stim of mine. Particularly the intonation when James Dobson died.

Adi

And then wasn’t there an ep where Ray liotta was genuinely involved? And it seemed like AJ had created the entire podcast to set that up

SaraELW

Horse Corner “They’re gone!” “Don’t worry about it” “More and more people are saying this”

Adam Paxton

Any intentionally referring to each other by the third parties name, and anything Goku. OOOOHHH NOOOOO

Zathomir

There's Sam Bultch, the dentist who writes songs for musicals.

Arthropod_Queen

when I first heard the leather bar bit I assumed it was a reference to something I didn't know

Elizabeth Power

That one is made even funnier by the fact that it is Ted Cruz saying it

Anna Eaton

I recently rewatched Nick Kroll & John Mulaney’s “Oh Hello” and realized they’re one sided telephone call bit uses the line “The police? That’s who you are!” years after Adventures in Odyssey. 😅😂

Chris Ramirez

It’s the pig is the top for me. I just wish I knew what episode it was from

maff!

he hwat is the only recurring bit i don’t actually understand, but i enjoy it nonetheless

maff!

it’s from episode 202 on The Dig

Chris Ramirez

Not exactly a bit per se, but I enjoy whenever they do an old man voice in the skits because it’s always just Palmer from FF7

Katy Wahl

He Hwhat? Is an oldie, but a delight when I get to hear it
