Caitlin Nellist (SlowpukeLIVE) joins the lads for a lovely day out with the Egg Council of America as they cover one of the worst and most popular game shows of all time: Queen for a Day. Topics include the ineptitude of Jack Bailey, the bakeries of El Cajon, and the roots of America’s obsession with the exploitation of trauma.

I know this is in no way the point of the episode - but what did child AJ mean by 100 AD????

On a picket line outside my job for the next two hours. This will do nicely to pass the time.

The Aussie voice sounds about right for the era, our accent back then for a lot of Aussies had that British twang to it. A little example from the olden times - Aussies asked if they wanted British or US to influence us. The lady who realises she is on camera when she spots the camera is adorable. https://youtube.com/shorts/wGeDsVpee6E?si=KGCwZS8-N1lZ_aHv Oh and lucky you, you have a cat that WAITS for you to clean the litter when he wants to do his biggest piss of the day. Mine just stomps his giant ass in while I'm trying to clean. Doesn't even bother burying it, he knows whats about to happen.

30:52 Rochester represent! Barney Brodeen(?). It's weird whenever I hear someone mention our nothing city.

Haven’t listened yet but this is such a bizarre, obscure pull for an episode that I can only guess it was Brian’s suggestion….

*gong plays as Jack Bailey enters the room even though he's white* hey guys

That one comment from the shrimp Jesus episode strikes again

This whole episode made me think about how when my British grandparents got a TV right after WWII, my grandfather didn’t let the family purchase a color television until they had been around for a decade because he “wanted to make sure they really figured out the technology first.”

The Wilcox-Gay Corporation released a few home record makers under their Recordio brand. They used premade discs that had a blank groove that was then recorded on using a stylus. They also had AM radio tuners, allowing you to record right from a broadcast.

That made me literally lol

Adding this to my alarmingly long list of heart wrenching TWOAPW episodes

Years before I ever listened to TWOAPW, I was scanning pages from All The Answers to show to my therapist. Shout out Kupperman!

Simply must be remembered that Penn Jillette was kind of a fixture around alternative and underground music circles. He emceed the Residents’ first EU tour. This is to say, he at the very least fucked one of the big eyeballs

Theodora

This show is fake. You guys made this up

John Leavitt

There’s a Hey Look Me Over reference in The Simpsons’ episode A Streetcar Named Marge

Boone Pulliam

this episode is just Brian's Old Timey Corner the Movie 2000 and I want more

sinesynced

It took me a little while to realize that I hadn't missed an explanation of the show's format--there just is no format lol

Absolutely bizarre hearing that theme song and subsequently finding out it came from a musical because my Salt Lake City elementary school used that tune for the school song, and somehow the lyrics were still in my head 20+ years later.

My grandmother was an Eastern Star, and all three daughters were in whatever the kid's Freemason club was (instead of scouting I guess) - oh it was Rainbow Girls. I've seen they're Anti-Catholic propaganda pamphlets - wild shit

I could swear I've seen a clip of You Bet Your Life where Groucho Marx is also deeply confused and doing pip pip cheerio bits at an Australian.

The host gives me immediate bad vibes after 30 seconds, but AJ‘s grandma being on truth or consequences is such a great thing for your family to have on video! What a happy memory. I also love hearing old radio, announcers and newscasters talk Like That. People imitate it a lot, but it’s cool to hear the genuine article. Edit: God bless the poor lady that wanted her tattoo removed. I hope they actually did it for her.

The updated version I'd love to see now would be a serial drama that takes place behind the scenes and in the audience, following the lives of women who make the show possible and the ones who are thrown into its churning maw for entertainment. Our hero is a woman who sees this awful injustice play out every week and works behind the scenes to set up mutual aid organizations among the women in the contestant pool, helping them discover what they can do to help one another without having to beg for scraps. Imagine the soft power a network of that many women could have!
