Issues universities face that are more pressing than ADHD: -becoming large real estate portfolios with a school attached -over relying on severely underpaid TAs -leadership who are unable to adapt to rapid tech advancement, leading to deep resentments between teacher and student -deterioration of public high schools caused by decades of privatization and defunding -crushing student loan debt and lack of viable job opportunities post grad Would’ve enjoyed a deeper discussion about higher education here, instead we got an hour of angry boomers airing their obvious contempt for the youth. Keep in mind the cohort currently at uni spent their high school years in masks on zoom under lockdown. This conversation could’ve been a lot more robust

This is a very disappointing conversation. The overdiagnosis moral panic has been around for decades and they’re just treading old myths that are so lazy and boring it hurts. Couldn’t make it to the end. It’s astounding to see two commentators who have no expertise in mental health and neurodivergence whatsoever complain about the lack of scientific backing of advocates? Liu relies on anecdotes as evidence (which she has done on a previous episode complaining about a friend who was around people who used the term pregnant people in Brooklyn or some similar non-issue) to make the point that unscientific reasoning opens the door for people on the right like Bari Weiss to exploit that as a weakness? Yet deBoer himself is a contributor to The Free Press. Multiple personality disorder and social contagion are really astonishing examples to bring up, considering their flimsy evidence base and history of weaponisation against minorities. Makes their supposed concern for people with severe autism seem not very credible. Very little to learn from this episode.

There is an epidemic of people speaking, with confidence, of things they are not equip to discuss. From “intellectuals” to comedians. I worry that reoccurring guests inevitably become friends or colleagues to josh and it limits the capacity to challenge bullshit.

I'm a little late to the party on this one but I found this to be an interesting, somewhat casual conversation among people more educated than myself. It touched on some taboo-ish topics in an honest and conversational way; that seems like something important to me. Thanks for sharing, I hope you are able to post more stuff like this even if it doesn't win you any points with large sections of your audience.
