Finally. I cut out, rewrote, shortened, and remixed an absurd amount of conversations Alan and Keyd had in this part. And it's still only half of this section of the chapter.

Chiaroscuro IX - Scene 1

Well, shit. Alan's gonna have to be his side piece. I like Keyd's alien kettle btw. Very steampunk! With his teas (I'm guessing they're teas) I keep imagining the blended teas you made for the series lol. Seriously, when is Darban gonna bust in with big, effusive self saying "Gay hermano!" This needs to happen. Also, sexy times need to happen. It may have been earlier that morning for Alan, but it's been like 6 months for the rest of us hahaha

No comment about the marriage thing, but it will definitely be relevant :p Their technology is a little bit steampunk! It's easy for them to generate basic heat-based power with their entities, especially something that essentially does just heat water, so they do have a lot of steam/heat powered tech. Although their advances have been set back/stalled a lot in the last 30+ years. Haha Darban has to be very very careful about all this. Even though he's a general, he doesn't have Keyd's status and wouldn't be getting this same consideration. It definitely doesn't feel safe for him to talk about it, even to Keyd. I don't even want to say how long it's been since that chapter (....a year, literally -_-) so this has been the longest day EVER.

Was that a legit tea maker that is powered partially by oen energy? Also, Alan freaking about wasted time, still doesn't connect the dots with Law. Haha Of course at this point he isn't really anyone more than a douchey friend of a friend who seemed to have it out for Alan so he is dismissable.

Basically! It does a few things, which are mainly "brew/strain a tea-ish drink' and 'brew/whisk a matcha-ish drink' (what Keyd did here is the second). It has very simple mechanisms but they are heat/entity powered. They'll talk about it a little in the next part, too. :)

And because Patreon won't let me add to my own comment, arg: Alan definitely did notice that Law was very good looking, but since he was such a shitty person to him that almost made him angry, and even less likely to actually be attracted to Law at all. He definitely has complicated and weird feelings about Law, for sure :)

Man, I'm LOVING this rewrite. It's so good. Not only is Alan's voice SO STRONG, I feel like we see a lot more of Keyd as a character and get such a better sense of who he is, even this early on. I really love the conversation they have about stories and reading. It's really cool. I also like how Alan talks about how he's felt about relationships with women, and that conversation they have. It feels so genuine! The writing in this scene is so good ahhh

Thank you! I'm really glad you're enjoying it. The way I'm having to write it makes me feel really unsure about how coherent or good or non-repetitive it is, just because the only time I have to write now is at work, and I have to email sections of chapters back and forth to myself and have no access to any of my notes or previous chapters and it's all a huge mess, but if I didn't do that nothing would be getting written. I'm glad it's at least readable and better than the drafts in some way! I'm really trying to erase that 'gay-for-you' trope that this series gets tagged with a lot, and also avoid that vaguely 'eww women' thing that lots of m/m books end up with. So I really wanted Alan to articulate in some way as much as he understands at this point, and I'm glad it sounds genuine :)
