So here's a PDF about the oenclar civilian colonies and barracks on other worlds and how THAT works. Since the oenclar have only been living off Clarylon for about 35 years, a lot of this is still a 'new' way of life and definitely not the norm for them. But this goes over how local governments formed in these colonies and essentially phased out the Worthies, which is obviously important to the L&S plot, and some various other topics like relations between oenclar and locals and when/why Maedajon disbanded the Worthies as an individual group and incorporated them into the ghereen instead. It probably sounds like a boring PDF but I think there's some good info in there that will augment a lot of behind-the-story stuff, and I figured it'd be a decent time to drop this info since this recent Skiagraphia chapter takes place entirely in a safe world.

Not that I expect anyone to remember this because it was a tiny detail forever ago, but Alan mentions at one point that Outesoke (a safe world town with an oenclar civilian area) doesn't have a barracks. It does, and it's mentioned in this PDF, but what Alan meant was that the town doesn't have a /training/ barracks, because it's more like a little outpost with a few soldiers stationed at it. So it's not an error or anything, just...definitions/semantics.

Nice pdf ! It's cool to see the youth (at least some of those born in the colonies) trying to get to know the different cultures around them, despite the oenclar's ideals. Though, now that they have Lojt back, things are probably changing once again..?

It's interesting to get perspective and a timeline for the whole war/evacuation. I didn't realize Maedajon was that involved or that he attempted to reclaim Clarylon once. It also fleshes out the "xenophobia" part better. People keep talking about it in the series, but it's hard to distinguish it from the homophobia.

A little bit of youth rebellion has got to happen somehow. :) And they obviously understand the ideals, just can't connect with them personally, especially if they're much younger. They don't entirely have Lojt back, there are just some civilians there experimentally, mostly families of soldiers who aren't in the warrior caste. But yeah, things would change again if they all suddenly moved back....

Yeah I have a whole timeline written up, but it's never explicitly laid out in the story. Maedajon wasn't agistar for very long, compared to how long a lot of them are. Also his attempt to reclaim Clarylon was a HUGE failure, it was short and kind of badly executed because Maedajon had a more political leader focus (versus Keyd who had always focused more on the military) and didn't go about it real well. So people don't talk about it much, but the war going on there right now is technically the third one that the races have fought each other on their own planet. And yeah, Alan experiences both at the same time, so it is hard to pick apart when it's homophobia and when it's xenophobia. Like for instance they'd actually almost object MORE to him if he was a woman, because then he could possibly have a kid with Keyd, and that would mean a mixed-race kid, and that would ALMOST be worse to them then a gay agistar. I'll probably work in a little more of the xenophobia stuff in rewrites - there is the woman who's mixed-raced and bitter about it and antagonistic towards Alan because of it, but she doesn't show up until the last book.

Man, I had always been very curious about how the oenclar colonies worked since LS& is so militarily focused and I liked learning the background here! I also liked getting a chance to learn more about the ways those colonies interacted with locals because I found myself wondering how living in foreign worlds and xenophobia worked. a great read!! (:

Like everything else that gets mentioned in this series, I have a full on separate story that's devoted entirely to what it's like dealing with the barracks on other worlds (pre-Clarylon evacuation) and exactly how separated the oenclar are supposed to be from the locals and the repercussions of not doing do. One day I'll get around to writing it! The main character has shown up in L&S before but he's super minor; he's a much bigger character in Kir and Darban's story. Basically I have stories branching off of stories endlessly. I really want o explore all these situations and elements of the world but since writing full stories takes a long time...at least I get to do some of it in these PDFs! I'm glad you enjoyed reading about it :)
