Skiagraphia XV

OKAY. This chapter was supposed to be up way earlier because it was like 95% done at the start of this month, but NaNo and other nonsense got in the way baaah (and also excuse any errors, typos, stuff like that, I'm in super time crunch this month). I know this feels like another long talky chapter that not a ton happens in, but it's laying a lot of stuff down for All The Things to happen in the next chapter (they finally get out of this hotel). Also some more of Keyd's Issues come up, but the poor guy is making progress. We're really getting close to the end here! I'm not sure if it'll be one more chapter or two (probably two, with the length of my stuff usually) and then the epilogue.

Commentary for this will probably take a while because now I REALLY need to focus on NaNo. Obviously that will NOT be done by the end of November but I'll keep on doing the story until it's done, including the voting. The first chapter should be up in a day or so.

"we're still fucking aliens" - Alan

Teromain

in more than one sense hahaha :D

Kevin Wotipka

I think your writing's climbed to a new plateau. What jelled?

Kevin Wotipka

And if I could like it twice, I would.

Teromain

Maybe that it's getting near the end of the whoooooole loooooong series, and not just a single book? Everything's pretty focused from here on out so I think I really know what I'm doing, or aiming to do, at this point. It's only taken like 7 or eight years to get here!

Brianna

My goodness Alan. I was almost tempted to shake you for saying 'if' the war ended. It's only a matter of time. When discussing the future, you should have more faith that your relationship will only grow stronger. :) And now it sounds like the ball is about to start rolling. How exciting!

Teromain

Haha, well, he is a little wary since every single time he starts thinking things are going well, he gets burned. This obviously seems good with Alief but he's worried about the Worthies most of all and how that's going to go down - that's the 'if'. :) And yeah, things are definitely going to start happening right after this! Getting pretty close to the end here. And they definitely both have faith that their relationship is going to get stronger, though Keyd does have his moments of 'you put up with all of this for ME; WHY' but that's less about their relationship and more about him being generally concerned for Alan/his wellbeing/his happiness over anything else. :)

Sorry in advance for misspelling of character names/rambling! I'm tryin to get back into the regular habit of reviewing and because of my day haven't gotten a chance to sit down until right before bed so my brain is tired (: But wonderful chapter, aaaaaa, I'm just super pumped for what's gonna happen next. One of the things I really like about your writing is how you slip in little bits of scenery that works really well to set a mood. I'm not sure if that makes sense (sorry, long day at work!). But what reminded me of this in this chapter is how you have like, one sentence of description of the sky with a single cloud, with Keyd, Alan, Rysa all looking at it together. It was all of two sentences but I felt like it was a great and just, idk, felt super perfect for the moment. This chapter had a couple of little things in that really makes me want to know more about things happening in the background too! Like, I am absolutely fascinated with the relationship between Alief and Maedajon and how it even started. I also really want to know more about this Prince Toal guy and how all that went down! I'm also curious to know more about burial (cremation?) traditions for the clar because of how everyone reacted to Alan's comment about bodies. But also makes me wonder if there have been other important folks in clar history who have been killed/declared dead and no one looked at the body and went "huh well if he died this way why does he have these wounds," or something. Overall though I love Alief as a character and watching Ociir react to the news that his secret society wasn't as secret as he thought it was. But I love how sort of mysterious Alief is--I feel like she's the kind of person I would describe as wispy. And yay, a fight between Keyd and Alan! I love that their relationship isn't prefect, and that Keyd isn't over all of these issues--too many times I feel like I end up reading stuff that has a character's years of issues just magically vanish after they find their True Love, and the way he still has all this stuff floating around makes him a much more tangible character. I also like that they have a relationship where they can fight, and then make up--it makes their relationship much more real and relate able.

I'm glad you want to comment about the chapter! Haha no worries about spelling or names or stuff; they all have weird alien names anyway :) There's a WHOLE bunch of little stories/sidestories/backstories I want to write (and some are written or partially are) about things exactly like this; how Maedajon and Alief started meeting is definitely one, and so is the thing with prince Taol (although the comment version of this chapter will mention more stuff about it). There's a little info about the burial/cremation thing for the oenclar in the religion PDF I think, but yeah it can actually be kind of a problematic practice because of exactly stuff like that, where not a lot of people even see the body. Like much earlier in Skiagraphia when they talk about how most people THINK Maedajon died (a wound that hadn't healed right), the reason it was so easy to gloss over the actual cause is because nobody got to see his body really at all. And that's happened before in their history, definitely. The body is kind of a disregarded thing once they die; it's not considered to BE that person anymore so not too much attention is paid to it and most people will just believe healers on what the cause was. I really like Alief too, she's one of my faves. She'll be around in other stories for sure. I have way too much stuff planned for this universe/these characters, not just small side stories but novel length things. Alief will definitely be a big part of at least one of them; the story that will be set five years after the end of Skigraphia and has Rhet and Ansa as the main characters. And she'll probably get sidestories as well. I love making their relationship not perfect. :) If it was perfect it'd be terrible, because that'd make no sense at all. Alan is obviously the less issue-y of the two but he's still an alien to this culture, and that would make their relationship a little strange and difficult even if Keyd didn't have all his problems on top of it. One of the whole points of their relationship I wanted to have happen was that Keyd /doesn't/ get over everything quickly or easily, that it'll take him years to really accept himself/everything and even then he'll still have moments of not, and that even though there might be True Love involved they still have to work really really hard at it, both with themselves and how they relate to each other. I'm not fond of stories where once relationship happens it's like a cure-all and nobody has to put any effort into it. These guys definitely do! It's way more interesting to see them fight for it despite the problems/misunderstandings.
