Out of the Frying Pan: Episode 1

So, finally, a main chapter! I know there's a lot of film/camera/etc. chatter and terms in here, which will also peter off as the story goes on because it can just be assumed, but it's really just establishing at this point. I can bullshit both camera stuff and food stuff pretty well, but I've probably /done/ most of the camera stuff  versus not actually cooking most of the food mentioned. So this is NOT going to be  endless food description thing, although obviously since there's reader voting there will be focus on some of it, winning and potential losing dishes mostly (although the voting is probably really going to come down to which characters seem more interesting to people). All of them have personal stories that might or might not ever get explored based on if they're voted off or not. At this point, like an actual competitions show, a lot of the characters aren't known well enough (or their dishes weren't even mentioned too much) so voting will probably be kind of random.

The voting is at the end of the chapter, a link in the actual google document. Please do vote! I really think the reader participation will be cool because it actually will affect the story in some ways. Some of the plot is fixed but a lot is not, and will depend on responses. Obviously the results will be at the start of the next chapter (if/when this story is ever posted publicly anywhere it'd be attached to the end of this one).

I really like the idea and I enjoyed reading the prolog! So I'm excited to read the first real chapter, but I'm not sure if it is only me, but the link for the google doc is somehow not working. :(

CJ

same :(

Teromain

Ah, geez. It should be working now, I have no idea what happened!

So, I think it is interesting to get the know all the stuff behind the scenes. Because I always wanted to know, even with movies I always wonder how do they film that? It's a lot to take in at first, also with the many characters, but I think you made them all stand out from each other, so it is easier to remember who is who. Made voting a bit difficult, but it's really fun. I can wait for the next episode! :)

"Okay contestants, our social media votes are in! The person who will be sent home today is..." *opens envelope, squints at name* "...Ryan the AC??"

I'm really enjoying this so far!! I love Yadhira, she seems like a lot of fun--and I'm also wondering if there's gonna be drama down the road with Chase. :0

I really like the idea of the reader voting and large cast of characters; it'll be fun to see how things play out as the story progresses. It's also interesting to read about the show from a "behind the scenes" perspective and hear about how some of the filming and camera stuff works. :)

My goodness. How glamorous television makes reality tv.. when it's somewhat staged. Even still, I like how the story is more behind the scenes than just the cooking competition. My theory about Nolan and Chase is... they either awkwardly hooked up once, they know each other outside of the show and some epic argument or something embarassing happened, orrr uh geez I don't know but I hope it's something dramatic. Maybe Chase staying on the show will add more drama. :D Btw Evelyn's last name changed midway through the chapter (it was Phan and then became Yau). I didn't have any particularly strong feelings about the bottom 4 so I just picked a random one. :O I know who I like so far but there's so many characters still that it's hard to form an opinion about most of them.

Teromain

The behind the scenes stuff is fun, that was the way I really wanted to approach doing a 'reality tv' story, since I've seen those before but never from this perspective. And there are definitely a LOT of characters, but as they get whittled down they'll get even easier to remember , hopefully. :) I'm glad you're enjoying it so far!

Teromain

haha, if only. :D Reuben got a very strategic punishment, but maybe Ryan won't be a dick the whole time. Or maybe he will...

Teromain

The people who are 'main' characters (or supposed to be) definitely include Yadhira and Chase, so they'll get a lot of stuff going on with them and Chase won't be in a position to be eliminated before the background issue with Nolan gets a chance to be uncovered. So he'll be around for a fair amount of time, probably with some drama included too :)

Potatoe

He's very fortunate he can't be eliminated. It's not easy to choose someone to vote for when they're all quite nice. I like how the secret way to win the competition is to be nice/interesting towards the camera dude. It's a deep, metaphorical message about how you should be respectful to everyone.

Teromain

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out with people participating! Especially since I have all the challenges set up already but have no idea which characters may or may not do them, especially ones much further along. So I can plan, but not too much!

Reality TV is such a crazy world; I've had a couple of friends who have been on reality TV shows and I know a bit about the industry, so while a lot of this may not be 100% accurate it's probably fairly close in some regards. I definitely know more about it than cooking! And what happened with Nolan and Chase will definitely come up; there won't be an opportunity to eliminate either of them before it's kind of 'revealed' (or, Reuben finds out) or otherwise that'd be pretty anticlimactic. :) And thanks for the thing about Evelyn's name. I changed it early on but the old name slipped through once, it is supposed to be Yau. And there's definitely a ton of characters and by this point it is probably hard to care, but that's pretty similar to real reality TV shows - I almost never care much about the first couple eliminated because there's no chance to. So definitely, it's kind of random at this point. :)
