Skiagraphia XVII: Part I

Since this chapter is taking a really long time (it's the last one so I'm giving it extra extra attention), I decided to split it into two so at least SOMETHING gets posted! The whole thing WILL be posted this month, but this is just the first half. It does end on a pretty big cliffhanger though, since it's actually the best place to split it. So some people might prefer to wait for the whole thing to be posted, which should be in another few days.

I knew it was going to be a cliffhanger, but I went and read it anyway and now I regret it. The cliffhanger is good though! It was a little suspicious that everything seemed to be going to plan. Now i'm curious to see how you're going to get everyone out of this situation. Keyd also needs to stop doing the brave martyr thing all the time lol. Anyway, I can't wait to see what comes next, but i'm also a bit sad that this series is ending (at least there are chiaroscuro rewrites still going).

Yeah the cliffhanger is basically right in the middle of the chapter and really the best place to split it! But the rest of it should be posted really soon. Keyd really is an impulsive hothead sometimes and when he's already in high-stress mode he really doesn't make the best decisions. I think he's made at least one unwise choice per book because of it. It's a little sad it's ending for me too, although I'll also be happy it's finally complete! But yeah, rewrites forever haha. And the epilogue too, although that's fairly short.

And then one of the Worthies stops the blade or stabs Eldronrhet in the back for attempting to cross the line and commit treason. I bet it will be one of the ones shocked Keyd was still alive.

wow damn, you weren't kidding when you said it was a bad cliffhanger though! absolutely gets me pumped to see what happens next though!! I love Alan's pep talks, they're always really cute and heartfelt. And also I like how he starts to sometimes think more like the clar do and I really like the paragraph you include here about it. All the soldiers sort of huddling around and trying to obviously not listen in on what's going on is sort of amusing to me. If only because I can visualize it so clearly. The imagery of Alief and Keyd meeting for the "first" time is super awesome and intense, I love it. :0 It's the sort of thing I would love to see an art of (but alas I have about 0% art skills or else I would probably do it). I like the difference in the way Keyd talks to soldiers versus people in the government who doubt him. I'm guessing this is one of the reasons he has support in the military? I find it kind of endearing that Rysa has messy handwriting; I would've always imagined her with fairly neat handwriting. And wow, this worthy rebellion seems really poorly planned on their part--once they've lost their common enemy they totally fall apart, don't they? And I'm definitely surprised that Arirsanya didn't know that Keyd was actually still alive. But omg, Rysa. She's one of my favorite characters and I'm worried about her too!

Yeah it just happened that THAT point was the best place to split it since it's almost right in the middle of the chapter. I might actually just release it as two chapters when it's posted publically since both are long enough to stand on their own, but right now it's still "one" chapter technically. If Alan was a more well-traveled or cultured person (before the series started) he probably wouldn't have been as dismissive of some aspects of clar culture as he was – and he wasn't even trying to be dismissive, it was always just "looool you think THAT why??" because it all seemed so weird and alien to him, but if he'd even just experienced other Earth cultures before he'd've probably been more open-minded. It's taken him a while to figure out that he comes from a culture too and things he thinks and believes can be just as weird to other people. But at this point he's subconsciously adopted some of their attitudes and now he can consciously be like "oh, that's really not that weird" about other things too. If I could do art I would do so much art for my own series haha, just because I think super visually and so I almost have to translate a movie in my head into words. And I know everyone else is probably visualizing very different things, which is also cool, but I would love to just be like "and this is how I see it!" Yeah Keyd has always had a lot of support/popularity in the military because he always saw himself as a soldier more than a politician/government person and has always insisted on being treated exactly like any other soldier, and generally had just earned a lot of respect by being very conscientious and caring towards other soldiers and especially his subordinates. So he always identified more with the straight-up military and they in turn like him a lot. Some agistar are more government-attentive (still soldiers, obviously, but their priorities are often more political) and Keyd never did that because he hated the government. They only got to plan about half their rebellion, and they kickstarted it WAY too early once Keyd dropped his 'change the whole government' plan so yeah, it is really poorly planned. The only thing they have going for them is that they have a lot of generals on their side and therefore a lot of manpower those generals can command, except a lot of those people like Keyd more than they do the guys they're supposed to follow orders from. So knocking Keyd out of the picture SEEMED smart to Eldronrhet, because then those people had no reason to think about disobeying, but it totally did eliminate the common enemy at the same time. And all the Worthies/generals want different things and they ALL want to be in charge, so they basically have no plan at this point. Which is why Eldronrhet didn't tell anybody else the truth, because now they're all trying to power-grab from each other and that was his ace in the hole, or so he thought.

Oh god, that cliffhanger. I stopped reading several times when the situation started to spiral out of control. Like, "nooo noooo argh whyyy??".

Teromain

Because Keyd's impulsive and unthinking sometimes, haha. And no way were they going to get through this without some huge hiccups :)

A. Mori

Argh, what a place to leave it! XD I'll wait for the second half to write a more comprehensive comment, but I just wanted to say that the line, "I couldn't imagine Alief wearing armor. That wasn't the way she fought her battles" really stood out to me. It's a nice concise, to the point statement which sums her up as a character really effectively.

Teromain

Haha yeah it's a pretty bad cliffhanger...:) Alief is one of my favorite characters in the series so I'm glad you liked that line about her, since it does sum her up pretty well.

Potatoe

Okay, you were right, that was one hell of a cliffhanger. Dammit Keyd, I love your badass speeches, but have you noticed that disaster seems to follow them?

Teromain

I warned everybody! :) And hopefully I'll get the second half posted tonight (well, tonight for me, which is Saturday for almost everyone else). Keyd and his impulsive badass moments are definitely always kind of a mess, haha.

Alex

I also think pretty visually and I def have some really vivid images of the characters/settings. All the time I wish I could draw/had an interest in but I just do not have the passion/drive/dedication it takes to be an artist haha. Quick question about Eldronrhet--does he actually regret any part of killing/trying to kill Keyd?

Teromain

Yeah I could probably learn to do art if I put in a TON of effort but I don't have the time/dedication either, especially with all the other things I'm putting a lot of time and dedication into! I could actually draw pretty well in college but kind of gave up on it. I'm glad you get good visuals out of the story though; it's sometime I try to do with everything I write. As far as Eldronrhet goes, yes, he does. There'll be several notes on it in the commentary, but killing Keyd was basically his last plan and one he'd only do if forced into it. And he feels forced now.

Potatoe

It looked like their plan was going so smoothly! Of course these assholes found a way to get in the way.

Teromain

You know me, I'm an asshole to my characters and never let them get anything done easily :)

Potatoe

"And everything went exactly how they planned it" wouldn't be a very interesting ending. Sorry boys. You gotta suffer.

Teromain

Suffer because of your own faults, yess. I mean, they could've walked right past these guys. KEYD.

Potatoe

Alan needs to get him one of those toddler leashes.

Teromain

Way back in Tenebrism Alan mentioned needing a Pokeball for Keyd... he probably wishes he really had one
