Augh okay finally sorry for the delay, I had some issues with how to split up the chapter and then got pretty sick (still recovering, and I did write some of this chapter between sleeping and waking up so if it's wonky in places...that's why). This is only half of what I'll post this month; essentially it's two chapters and this is the first, but you'll also get a Darban one on the 15th. Also the regular bonus stuff and commentary (for both chapters) later on!

(this is also the rare story of mine where I name chapters)

I like this! How old is Kir here?

Teromain

I'm glad! He's 19 here, in actual years. The story follows a pretty long period of both their lives so there will be some time jumps

*incomprehensible sounds* oh my god I love this so much! I love Kir and Darban, they're my OTP. So I am soooo excited about this fic - book? Fic? - and I really can't wait until Darban's chapter because zomg he's such a puppy full of love and it'll be a really nice contrast to Kir's angst-fest. What a horny teenager Kir was though, amiright? Poor kid. Raging hormones will get you every time. This series is gonna be sweeeet!!

Teromain

Haha, Kir (and Keyd too) have surprisingly robust sex drives. They're just /really/ good at reigning that in and controlling it, but it'll be pretty obvious in their individual stories. Darban's chapter is definitely a lot different and lighter, though being in Darban's POV might be a little different than people expect. While he comes across as a pretty liberal person in the main series, he's very aligned to conventional oenclar ideas especially when he's younger, so he's kind of casually biased about things, but not in a mean way. Just a privileged/never had to think about it way and he's not very good at seeing from other people's perspectives. I'm glad you've enjoyed it so far!

Brianna

I really love how Kir refers to himself by his full name. It's really eye opening looking at the world and oenclar culture through his perspective when everything we saw through Keyd and Alan's eyes.

Teromain

Yeah it's definitely different through Kir's eyes, especially back in the timelines like this. And Kir hates his casual name so much he doesn't even use it to himself, though some people he's known for a long time will call him by it

This is great! I love the descriptions of clar culture from the view of an insider! I love the bits about redrawing old maps again and again. I'm not sure what that tidbit really stood out to me but it did! The imagery in this chapter is amazing, it's so well done. I love how fleshed out everything feels. Lol, Haon is not very subtle--he seems pretty sure he can get away with what he's doing. I'm hoping he doesn't get a sad ending but uh, I'm guessing he does? Also, Jaryn! It's exciting to meet him too! This is really fun to read! Thank you for posting!

Teromain

Glad you had fun reading it! It definitely is different with point of views from not only inside clar culture from someone familiar with it, but also civilian culture AND like 70 years back in time. This is a very different time for the clar. It'll switch over to pretty solidly military soon (straight away, for Darban's POV) but there will be a bit more with Kir! And I'm glad stuff feels fleshed out since I'd hope it would, after building this world for 8-9 years A lot of the building happened at the same time I was writing L&S but at this point there's already a ton established solidly so it's more consistant. Haon is definitely not being subtle but he's really good at reading people, and he started out just being very regular friendly, but when Kir reacted (albeit subtly) to that, he was like 'ah', and slowly started coming on stronger and stronger and kept getting non-negative reactions each time. He would have stopped if he'd sensed even the slightest aversion, because like Kir says, it was super dangerous of him to do it. Some people are a little more risky about it though, Haon happens to be one of them (it's usually people in middle castes).

Does Kir realize just how many pretty young things he's likely to be surrounded by in the military? And that it's common for soldiers to shower together?

Teromain

Haha yes, but his reasons for deciding to go there are more about making his life more 'important', as he sees it, so that outweighs those difficulties (which he knows he'll have anywhere). And he's smart enough to put on a really good front. As long as nobody's directly making an advance on him he's a lot better at controlling himself, since getting hit on by another guy is something that's never happened to him before so he had no idea how to deal. And definitely in the military nobody hits on people of the same sex, though they do shower together and are very casual about physical (non-sexual) contact.
