Okay so we're pretending last month and this month are one month and I'm getting these chapters and their bonus stuff out over both of them. This chapter ended up being a little longer than Kir's, so I'm probably going to extend a scene in Kir's to make up for it.

Dual II: Gaining the Measure

I'm trying to figure out a better way to do this whole Patreon thing. Everything I've tried here doesn't work very well, so it's time to shake it up again. At some point I'll find something where I'm posting regularly and also not killing myself doing it. I'm already working on an alternative to the PDFs, which I don't think are too great because they take so long to do and also are just a big undigestable chunk of info that maybe not everyone reads.  So I'm trying to make smaller reference things that give a bit of info but not a ton, relevant to each chapter.

I'll get there, eventually, I promise. I'll stop being so flaky with everything.

I'm loving this story so far, it's so interesting to get glimpses of what civilian life is like and see these different sides to characters we meet much later on in the L&S series. Darban being all big-brotherly made me smile, and baby Hahd is adorable. :)

I love Darban. I'm looking forward to when he and Kir meet. Also, baby Hahd is so cute.

Glad you're enjoying it! It's been a long time in the making, I probably started it in 2011 or 12. And a lot of the characters here are going to get more fleshed out parts in the main series rewrites, Dahne especially. Others will really only be here, for various reasons. But it's fun to visit known characters so far back in their lives!

Darban is pretty fun, although socially ignorant of anything below him. I think it'll be interesting for people to see more of him and how he comes across especially at this age to other clar (instead of how Alan sees him). He and Kir will meet fairly soon :)

The contrast between Kit and Darban's upbringing is almost startling in how different their family lives were. It's also fascinating how Darban thinks differently than the others in his caste when evidently the others have a superiority complex. Perhaps because they expect to be higher rank just because of their backgrounds?

Very different lives and very different people! It's not so much that the people from the Warrior caste have a superiority complex - they kind of do, but it's not a mean-spirited one, it's how they've been raised. So it feels natural and normal to them to think they are better, because they've always been told they are (but also that they have to PROVE that status, so there's a lot of pressure on them as well. They don't always get handed things just because of their birth, though they're more likely/able to have the opportunity for those things). Darban kind of has this attitude too, but he's just more willing to interact outside of his caste, but he was still categorizing every person he interacted with in this chapter, figuring out where they fell socially.

Man, I'm really enjoying this! Seeing all these characters in a brand new light is awesome! Kid Darban is really an interesting character, and I really enjoyed seeing this side of him. I love seeing all the brothers interact, too--you write sibling relationships really well! It's something I noticed in scenes with Alan and his siblings interacting, and I really see it here, too! The interactions feel really genuine and believable. Also, kid Hahd is just the cutest, haha. I also really enjoy how you write his thoughts/feelings of the lower class cadets. It's very interesting and I'm excited to see how he and Kir get along at first! I'm also very excited to meet Dahne! Great chapter!

I'm glad! They are pretty different people right now - Darban is kind of well-meaning socially ignorant dope and Kir is a super-paranoid semi-coward (and he'd admit that). Darban is actually probably the most different, but it's in how he treats other people and is incredibly unaware of how his actions look. It's funny because I don't really have any siblings! Not ones I grew up with (they're way older and were almost adults when i was born) so I always base sibling relationships off my friends and their siblings and interactions I've seen over years and years of knowjng various siblings at different ages. I'm glad it all reads as legit though! Since I do tend to write about siblings a lot. Kir and Darban will get along...interestingly. Especially at first. Kir did describe how they ended up being friends once, and this will just be a super extended playing out of that. Kir does not make a good first impression in the army, haha.
