THE PAWN

the Bishop kept a rail between you and her. this one doesn't bother with

a line. she has arithmetic.

her rule is SWARM: she may only ever drop pawns. so when she takes your

knight, your rook, your queen — none of it comes back onto the board.

she just holds it.

that sounds like a weakness right up until it's your queen in her hands

and you've got thirty more moves to sit with that.

"so bring me your queen. truly, bring her. my rule will not even let me

put her back on the board. i will simply hold her.

and you will spend the rest of this game knowing exactly where she is."

SHE'S VOICED 🎧

first one in the series who talks. her whole introduction and everything

she says when you finally take her down — nine lines, in her voice.

the text on screen now paces itself to her delivery, so she isn't talking

over herself. put headphones on for this one.

ten portraits, same as the Bishop. all of them driven by the board.

AND I OWE YOU AN APOLOGY ON THE BISHOP'S BEHALF

while tuning the Pawn I found something ugly: every opponent in the game

was reading the board upside down. a bug in how the AI scored positions

meant all five of them misjudged their own structure, the entire time,

since v0.1.

that's fixed. all of them play noticeably better now — including the

Bishop, so if you cleared her before, go and see how that goes for you

the second time.

the Pawn got a separate pass too. she was hoarding pieces her own rule

wouldn't let her use, which made her the softest opponent in the game

despite being second. she is not that anymore. she takes about five times

more off you than she did.
