Hey everyone! Today we've got a special, extremely meaty bonus ep for y'all. We took your advice and dove headfirst into Visions, the recent collection of animated shorts produced by a handful of anime studios. We dig into our favorite entries in the collection, dip into discussion about what doesn't work about the more middling episodes, and also diverge into... some other random conversation.

We know that there's a lot of interest in us doing other bonus stuff like this, but for now our time commitments with full time jobs and other Patreons make that a hard thing to commit to at any level of support. But we do still wanna do special things like this from time to time. You know, as a treat. So definitely let us know what other sort of stuff you'd love for us to tackle in the future. No promises, not even small ones, but it's always worth tossing ideas into the ring.

In any case, hope you enjoy this ep!

The Dual was my favorite episode because I love the Darkside. The Ninth Jedi was my second favorite.

Seb

They had Masako Nozawa for the Astro Boy one they're not going to waste that by not having a sick lightsaber fight lol

Jena Westergreen

In this episode you compare visions season 1 to animatrix. I'm excited to eventually hear what ya'll think of visions season 2, way less uses of "i have a bad feeling about this"

deucemoosevvm

I stand with Natalie! Having a Furry makes it the best!

Sofia Trug

I agree with you. The Elder was my second favorite after the Bunny one and I think that's just because I'm a sucker for adoption stories.

Sofia Trug

Maybe it was because I watched all of them in a row but The Elder felt like a breath of fresh air (ironic considering how textbook Star Wars it was). It wasn't trying so hard to be cool; The characters weren't crazy unstoppable badasses, the art wasn't in your face, the story wasn't complicated. And while I enjoyed the fight scene, my favorite parts were the quite moments like Dan's interaction with the children. I do think I'd prefered if they could have picked up a lead from the ship but the sort of bittersweet helplessness of the Jedi having no idea where the elder came from or if there would be more was also good. To be fair, there were only a few that I actively didn't like and only one (The Twins) that had nothing interesting to me at all.

Sofia Trug

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I liked the designs (except the combat stilettos) and the concept of a sith hunting siths but to me, it was so much what it was referencing that it felt like parody. The description of the book sounded really cool tho.

Ben

Oh hell yes!

Doug Lunsford

would love a commentary track for Solo:A Star Wars Story or Rogue One someday

Patrick Kay

hell yeah ok i haven't been able to listen yet but I'm so excited I'm going to write "hell yeah"

sam

thank you so much for this, and if you need to change up format for the patreon to keep things interesting for yall, please don't feel married to the Q&A concept - do whatever: visit old EU/legends stuff, rewatch the OT with context from clone wars, 1v1 kevin j anderson, drunk rifftrax commentary on episode 3, whatever it takes.

SneakyGato

Looking forward to this!

Kieren Martin

Appreciate it when you have time but no expectations. Just do what you have bandwidth for.

Very exciting to see a bonus pod! As for no-promises future bonus content, I suppose a dive into some of the games that were made during the prequel era (1999-2005, there's a loooot of diversity in SW games in this period) could be interesting.

Emma

I was super excited to see this pop up in the feed today. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Visions.

Andrew Noakes

Was hoping you guys would do this. For suggestions, maybe looking at some prequel era comic books that the show ended up using for inspiration could be cool? I'm thinking the early ones with Asajj Ventress, Quinlan Vos, and Jango Fett: Open Seasons since all have material the show ended up using later (Mandalorian Civil War and Death Watch started in Open Seasons). Looking into how Ventress started is also a good excuse to watch Genndy Clone Wars.

I am pretty interested in the book based on the Duel now. Personally, I hated the short. The film grain, color pallette, and sketch effect were too over powering for me. There was a moment when the lady with jumps up, her sketchy effect goes horizontal and the film grain looks kind of diagonal that made me feel motion sick so I had to pause it for a moment. As a result, it was my lowest ranked Two Guys Fighting short because I couldn't even look at it. The themes and concepts are actually interesting to me though, so I want to see how the book expands on it

Joining Natalie in the Tatooine Rhapsody respect squad. And I don't know what Ali's problem was where she couldn't switch it to the Japanese track but you totally can. The song does sound way better in Japanese. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pEeAdJ_VjQ

Sam Humleker

Did anyone catch that the vocalist on the soundtrack of The Village Bride is the same vocalist on NieR Automata and Replicant?

Brandon Dorigatti

The bit about the jedi temple being built on a well of the Force is mentioned in the Yuuzhan Vong book "Traitor". Vergere mentions it to Jacen, and he senses that it is evil, but Vergere says he is wrong and goes into some sick grey Jedi shit. This was one of my favorite EU books.

Pilcrow

A correction: Hitoshi Haga was a key animator on Millennium Actress, but the director was Satoshi Kon, a man who put out absolutely nothing but bangers until he tragically died of cancer at 46. Like, the man made Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent, and Paprika. He didn't miss. (Anyone looking to check those out, though, should note cw: sexual assault for Paprika and *especially* Perfect Blue)

Sudanna

I liked The Elder a lot, it might be my third favorite. It had my favorite fight scene, the one that seemed the most actually physical and intricate, and wonderfully stark rather than bombastic. The old Sith having just sort of gotten fed up and left Sith teachings behind was great(this was similar to something I liked about Tatooine Rhapsody, that a Jedi just stops being a Jedi entirely and does other shit with his life). The art style is probably the one that I like the most. Simple everyday interactions between Master and Padawan are great, and Natalie's right that trying to fix like a wild animal problem and stumbling across an enemy swordmaster wizard is a cool dynamic. Austin's not wrong, it's very basic, but some of these Visions go out on a limb and fall flat on their faces and I'd rather have something straightforward and skillful.

civilized

We're married to the Q&A concept because it's about 1000% less time consuming than any of those other ideas. (Which is the reason that so many Patreons do that style of bonus content.) If we could fit other stuff in, I promise we'd do it!

Forrest Sarles

The Tarkin novel is also where our boy Sheev got his first name

sam

i bet the four of you could beat up kevin j anderson in under 2 hours, with minimal prep

Squeeq

I'm just getting through Visions now so I have context for when I listen - did you listen in Japanese, or in English dub, or a mix from person to person?

Patrick Kay

The Ninth Jedi is so clearly some dude's alternate reality version of the Sequel trilogy. Its bizarre placement in the "timeline" is likely what renders the whole Visions project non-canon. Imagine Luke as Juro, Rey as Lah Kara, Finn as Ethan, and a conflicted Adam Driver escaping the battle and your mind will start going places. I didn't dig 9th as much as others, but I see the appeal.

There's a story in a recent issue of Marvel's Age of Rebellion, an anthology comic, where Biggs Darklighter and Jek Porkins take a break from Rebel Alliance dogfighting to vacation at a beach planet for like a week. Nothing really happens. It's considered canon. It's also cute and I loved it to pieces. That's exactly how I feel about Tatooine Rhapsody, which serves no real purpose except to make folks smile. "Chibi Boba Fett," "Ozzy Osbourne the Hutt," and "generic shonen opening song" are all exactly what they should be, a meandering story without galaxy-wide ambitions. I love that, and wish there was more of it. So often I feel that the scope of Star Wars and the demand that each story be important is a detriment. It's what leads to the beauty of The Village Bride, sure, but it also leads to bored obligation of The Elder. A New Hope may be hard to return to without awareness of all the other SW narratives, but it's worth remembering that from the beginning the series has delighted in the goofy and unnecessary. I can't force y'all to love Tatooine Rhapsody like I do, but if you were to do more bonus episodes like these I'd love to hear you experience the silly asides from old books and comics and cartoons. They may not rewire the way we think about SW, but they do put smiles on faces. Watching a Hutt with heavy metal hair shred on his guitar put a ridiculous grin on me!

As a someone who's super into Kill la Kill( with a ton of caveats) The Twins felt super flat to me. It was probably the lack of the intense homoerotcism that normally attracts me to trigger/gainax's work

Alex Hambrock

I totally clocked it as sounding like Nier music right away, but I didn't want to say anything because I was embarrassed I was just missing some wider trend and I was going to look like a guy who's only seen the Boss Baby

Kzinssie

I loved Tattooine Rhapsody because I've literally wanted a band story since I watched the Max Rebo scene in RotJ

Kzinssie

That said I hate Smooth Jabba, I'm surprised nobody brought that up

William J Nesbitt

I love The Village Bride so much, what a beautiful tone piece with amazing music. That final showdown is etched into my brain!

2026-09-15 02:00 Definitely vibe with the choices of favorites here; I think my least favorite was a tie between The Twins & The Elder also mostly for the reasons y’all listed. I do have to give The Elder one kudos though: it’s sick when a fight does the ‘turn lightsaber off and then back on in the middle of a battle to stab’ thing. Cannot help loving that. Also found it noteworthy and a bit sad that the English subtitles for the Japanese language track were really half-assed (on Disney+ only the English track CC subtitles were available, and even Elsewhere it was clearly subtitles for the English dub). The Japanese voice talent for the shorts was top-tier with a ton of recognizable voices. And the subtitles ranged from underwhelming to (unfortunately at its worst in Lop and Ocho) off-time by a good 5-10 seconds.

Also definitely had Japanese available as a voice language on Disney+, but maybe that’s a region thing?

Haha I enjoyed the turnaround of opinion (or recency bias) on Akakiri; I quite liked that one and was surprised at the initial indifferent response to it. The character design, or at least how the creators may have conceived of her according to Austin, of the Sith was probably my only caveat about it. Otherwise though, the dread and drama of the final stage was delightful. Thanks for the bonus ep!
