Whew! Now THESE were some episodes. And that means that, as you might have guessed, we've got some BIG questions to dig into. What's the most important one? Well, that's up to you, but I suspect that the show notes below will offer more than a little hint...

Ciaran McGhie

I come from the future just to say I can't believe you guys watched the trailer for tales of the jedi before finishes season 7 of TCW. So many headfucks for yourselves!

bimby-cat

I love the switch of them saying that younglings and D-squad arcs were like going up a roller coaster to an inevitable good conclusion when, if you go back to the end of the D-squad episode, Natalie has a crisis of faith on whether anything from the clone wars was worth watching at all lmao

bimby-cat

Even wider, i feel like his arc can be charted from the episode with the deserter clone. In that episode, he comes to respect Cut, but ultimately believes that he is still wrong and that defending the republic and the Jedi is right. At the end of umbara, though, we find him seriously questioning what the point of all of this is and whether this war matters at all. I feel like that’s a really big shift in belief by itself (though I haven’t watched season 6 yet and don’t know how he’s handled there)

Verdigree

I think the fascinating thing is that by the end, I think Ahsoka was the one Jedi who listened and understood Barriss's message and in the end is more Jedi than the Jedi Council, Barriss hasn't given her a permanent emotional wound that rockets her into the Dark Side, she ultimately saved Ahsoka physically and spiritually, Palpatine doesn't have to kill her to get to Anakin, and she's saved from following Anakin into a dark place or going down with the Jedi's sinking ship, I think the Mirialan zoomed-out perspective and focus on the Cosmic Force informs her perspective

Luin

ok but like for someone who's only got "charm points", author jude watson gave obiwan SOOO many romantic entanglements in the jedi apprentice series. like he literally picks up a recently widowed milf and another jedi apprentice

Ron Crawford

Obi with mom jeans energy 🤣

So, Grace Randolph aint a real one. When the Bad Batch was coming out she openly admitted that she didn't know a lot about Star Wars and that she hadn't watched Clone Wars or Rebels or any of that. But she then proceeded to go in and critique as if she was knowledgeable about Star Wars. And it was weird and bad. My wife watches her occasionally but she comes for people too much and she bends to the opinion of her audience too frequently for my tastes. She ain't a real one. Watch ScreenCrush instead.

Danny Mason

If you're hinting that you're gonna watch all of Rebels before Season 7 of Clone Wars then I fully support this decision and also it's gonna kill me

Your Name.

I know they are doing release order, but I really think that should be release order within each series, chronologically otherwise. I’d have them finish Clone Wars, do two episodes of Tales of the Jedi, then start on Bad Batch. Season 2 should be finished up by the point they’ve gotten through all that. Then move on to Rebels. Bad Batch really is just a continuation of The Clone Wars.

Danny Mason

I disagree tbh, there are so many moments in Bad Batch that are referencing things you're already supposed to know from Rebels that they just wouldn't get the full experience. Same with why they should watch Rebels before Season 7, everyone else watching Season 7 had way more context for Ahsoka's story than if you just watch Clone Wars. You can't really go wrong with release order imo, it's just gonna kill me because I can't wait to hear them talk about Season 7.

Your Name.

I’m biased because I haven’t watched Rebels. I was going to watch it along with them. I enjoyed Bad Batch just fine.

Danny Mason

I watched Bad Batch before Rebels and also had a good time with it, but it's definitely richer when you've seen Rebels too, it's as much a prequel to Rebels as it is a sequel to Clone Wars, watching it along with them will be great!

Mason Lee

Im agree with Danny on Rebels before Bad Batch, but I would like them to finish CW in entirety before Rebels. I respect the thought process but I'm impatient lol Bad Batch has numerous character overlaps with Rebels.

wolfstar5

The whole "what options to redo the s5 structure" hits hard bc I first watched the youngling arc and the d squad arc at like, literally the lowest point in my life losing two tight friendships and working bad retail. I think I'm just watch order pilled. I can't in good conscience recommend the show without also noting EXACTLY what episodes to save themselves the trouble on in a "this is not a place of honor" kind of way

Zachary Moran

Austin has long been dogmatic about watching things in release order, I would be surprised, and maybe slightly disappointed, if they didn't follow through here.

Damian Brown

When Rob first did his "thank God were almost done" thing I thought for real they were hinting AMCA was gonna end after season 6 of CW. Thank the maker that got sorted out into the real hint later on lol

Damian Brown

My light spoiler thing is... Feel like since AMCA is a pro-release order means something show, you should see || Nufbxn'f || (rot13 spoiler protection) story in Rebels before going back to see them in CW season 7.

Jeff Sisler

As someone who was very glad they did ROTS before watching all of clone wars...having to wait until the other side of rebels to see the conclusion to a lot of that stuff would be really rough.

Divya M. Persaud

Ok literally after I sent that question to yall I was like damn is the answer Lux Bonteri 😭

Emily Prechtl

I was so happy to hear them do a live reaction to the Tales of the Jedi trailer! I just watched it for the first time a few nights ago and was just as hype to see more Ahsoka content!! Also -- what was the ominous "they don't know what that means yet" when Rob made the comment about being almost at the end of clone wars?! I'd respect if they just wanted to stick to the OG clone wars, but I love hearing their takes on everything Star Wars, I feel like there's so much potential for content nowadays

Emily Prechtl

Also also - I'm surprised no one else mentioned this, but it's always stuck out to me: Barriss makes an interesting face after her speech at the end of s5. Right after Palpatine waves his hand and says "take her awayyyy," you see a flash of (what I read as) betrayal before she's led away by the guards and the scene continues. It always made me wonder if she knew something about Palpatine/Sidious, or if he had a hand in her radicalization (as one of his many side projects he was hoping would pan out). It just seemed like a super intentional expression to have her make, but then again that arc was known for having a lot more facial animation than normal so idk

Emily Prechtl

Ok now that I'm watching it back it looks more like the expression is directed at Ahsoka, which is still interesting! I wish we'd seen more of the fallout of that specific friendship. A lot of the ep is about Ahsoka's reaction to the way the council treats her (rightfully so) but not as much about the personal betrayal she must feel that her close friend/confidant was the one who ultimately framed her

Alec

Personally I dont think theres anything super substantial in s7 that would require them to see rebels beforehand. A lot of s7 content was devised before Rebels anyway. I think itd make sense to finish s7 and then move onto Rebels but im cool with whichever route the team takes

Felippanda

I don’t think there’s anything inherent to the story that makes watching Rebels first a must, but since so much of the podcast is spent analyzing creative decisions and real world context I think having the Rebels context is going to make for much more interesting Season 7 analysis.

atb432000

The fact that the end of S5 is so good is, IMO, just an argument for creative constraints. TCW had 3 "final seasons," and that's where they made most of the best arcs of the entire show. Not when they knew they had 100 episodes and plenty of time to explore the space, but when their time was limited, when they were forced to say, "how can we best use what's left to us? what are the stories it's most urgent and exciting for us to tell?" That's when we get the good shit. Which hopefully, as the civvies suspected themselves, will also make Tales of the Jedi really good!

Coreyyy

My nickname back in school was corky. I hated it then. Hate it now. My headcanon is his name is Corey

Ben Hower

For context, yes, as Austin speculated, Barriss's unsatisfying Legends EU fate was written about a decade before the end of season 5 aired. Her death on Felucia was based on a Revenge of the Sith deleted scene that made it into the comic adaptation of the movie. It's something y'all brush up against from time to time when you read something interesting on wookieepedia and wonder why the show ignored it. The real answer is that George Lucas didn't really consider the licensed stories part of *his* vision of the universe, though he had some hard limits on what he would let them do and would mine it for cool ideas and characters from time to time. So frequently, TCW would come along and depict an idea from George that left the EU to scramble for some retcon or messy way to patch up a story that was contradicted by the show

Ben Hower

Oop, and you just double checked that... guess I should have kept listening first 😅

Keeper

IIRC, that had a death for Quinlan as well right?

J

I’m a S5 truther too, I think those low lows add to how crazy it gets by the end. My 1st experience with TCW was watching it with my youngest brother though, and the youngling arc was one of his favorites, so I think I may have been stockholm’d into this opinion though lol

Tash Diehart

"This show is almost nothing but clowns!" I have some very bad news about Rebels...

Patrick Kay

I'm all caught up on my Star Wars, which may be why I'm a season 5 truther. I know the high highs to come, and it may be that's why I can go back and enjoy Meebur Gascon and his fuckin D-Squad. Those episodes aren't *good* and I recognize that, but also sometimes dumb Star Wars happens and it still makes me go :) I don't want to turn off the critical side of my brain, but I feel nourished by so many other feasts that I don't mind Jar-Jar stepping in poop and yelling "icky icky goo!" It wouldn't surprise me if y'all experience something similar in the years to come.

Jex

During the conversation about whether any character has actually had a shift in goals/perspective, I was shouting "Rex! REX!!" We saw him go from vehemently defending the Jedi on Umbara, to ordering his fellow clones to pursue Ahsoka without hesitation. Doesn't this count as a character arc?

Mitchell Edwards

I think a big part of how you evaluate Season 5 as a whole comes down to if you're a Hondo Enjoyer or not. Because if you are then the ratio of good to bad arcs looks a lot more appealing.
