Well, we've finally done it. Eight months after it's debut, we have all finally watched Obi-Wan Kenobi. Some of us for the second time. And I know what you're thinking, looking at that runtime: Wow, they must really have a lot of feelings about this, the single chance the franchise has to get Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen back in a room together, one last opportunity for the prequel's complex protagonists to voice their feelings to one another. That's certainly what this show is fundamentally about. Right? Right??? Well...

Christopher Ranney

I've been anxiously awaiting this since I watched the series when it came out

Patrick Kay

I liked the show mostly but am prepared to hear critique because I love and appreciate AMCA 🙂

Alice H

Eight star runtimes

Captain Fram

This just torpedoed my day in the best possible way

Kara

1 star for every hour rounded up

Words Maybe

Dang, that's 5 more hours of quality content than you can find in the entirety of Obi-wan.

BruceWayneBrady

Oh I can't wait to dive into this. That runtime is amazing.

Greg

This is almost exactly the runtime of the whole Obi-Wan series (4h40m). Well done.

Ryan Melanson

Good thing I'm on vacation so I can get thru this 5 star runtime

superkeaton

Obi-wan was rough. Thank god for Andor. As for the blaster bolts, no, those should deflect, not be absorbed. One edge I think the clones have is that the Jedi are all being disoriented by the mass-death of Jedi through the Force, while the clones are being driven to ruthlessly eradicate them. Reva being an Order 66 surivor isn't even unique to her. Most, if not all of the Inquisitors, were Padawans and Knights forcibly turned by the Inquisitorious to be used in the hunt for other Jedi.

Colin C.

I really liked Flea in this show. He was like an Ewok Adventures level badguy who didn't realize he was in a Skywalker Saga story until it was too late.

Kzinssie

wont have a chance to listen to this for a while but i gotta get my big takeaway in early - at the end, when obi-wan has vader at his mercy, i 100% thought he was about to murk that bitch and it was gonna start a whole like rebuild alternate continuity where vader gets fucking got before a new hope

Coreyyy

I am 2 hours and 7 minutes in to this pod and i already finished my ff14 weeklies. What am i supposed to do the next 2.5 hours? Edit: 3:53 Ive done my wow weeklies too. Were feasting yall

Solomon Mars

while I like this episode a lot, I really wish y'all had watched Rebels before getting to this series. Y'all finding the Inquisitors, weird, laughable and frustrating was for me like "oh, they don't know yet." I can't wait until you get to the end of Rebels. But thank you for FOUR and a half hours of fun.

Alex Hambrock

I started this episode up, was explaining to my girlfriend who Satine was and halfway through she said "I'm sorry, Satine? As in, Nicole Kidman's character opposite Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge?" and we just had to stop the podcast and stare at each other for a few seconds

qwaemor

Ohhhh my god. How did I never think of this connection?! They even look like each other!

xandala117

Haven't started the episode yet but that's a fucking 5 star run time. Thanks folks. I'm dying from strep and a mystery disease so this'll keep me entertained as I waste away. <3

Kenneth Elder

I am so curious about the crew watching Rebels even more now.

Thomas Hansen

As a whole, I thought the series was just fine. Not nearly as good as it should have been, but totally watchable. What did almost ruin it for me, though, was the soundtrack. In and of itself, there was nothing wrong with the music written for the show, except for how they refused to use any of the existing Williams themes until the end of the last episode. Other than that baffling choice, the show made me cry a couple of times, so I can't be too mad at it. But really though, add thirty seconds of Leia's theme, the Force theme, and/or the Imperial March into each episode and I'd bump the show up at least a full letter grade.

Adrian

I’m not done yet but man this is a great episode. Listening to you guys mentioned how cartoonish the grand inquisitor made me wish you had seen rebels. He’s Saturday morning cartoonish because well he’s from a Saturday morning cartoon. I’ve never even thought about it like this. Can’t wait to finish this at 3 in the morning. Thanks for the 5 Star run time. It’ll make work fly by.

Rad Rodge

This is a rare moment where I do credit Filoni with some guile and stagecraft for never confirming this connection haha

Rad Rodge

Hahah agreed, well put

Jason

Hoping Hayden Christensen gets another chance during Ahsoka

Jon Rorick

First off, y’all constantly deliver for us. AMCA is the best out there. Five star run times. Watching Obi-Wan was such a low for me. So many of its more interesting ideas and plot points kind of all come from Rebels, which was wild watching it happen in real time. I constantly found myself going crazy as scenes played out and going “this shit hits so much harder in Rebels.” Obi-Wan robbed me of my sanity especially when some friends thought it was good. This AMCA episode has returned my sanity. Cant wait to see the cast react to the fact that JarJar fucks.

saturn

i looked at the patreon notes before the episode and i literally thought the first image was from a 2000s star wars game

pointybread

Just wanted to say, Ali's "Wade Jr" joke was so incredibly funny. I've been chuckling to myself just thinking about it all day. Well done, excellent episode.

Nas

I love this podcast, you guys rock.

Scott Thompson

Not to make this a bummer zone, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet, I believe they added the graphic content warning to the show because it premiered within a week or so of the Uvalde shooting and it opens with kids in peril. Stranger Things did the same thing.

Shift

The show is almost worth it for Ewan Mcgregor putting his entire ass into the moment where the mask breaks and he sees Anakin's face again. It's a moment that is so well acted by both him and Hayden and is so much of what I have wanted out of the Obi-Wan and Anakin dynamic that I sometimes find myself forgetting that the rest of the show exists and was an utterly miserable viewing experience. As an aside, in the break between you doing Attack of the Clones and then actually starting The Clone Wars, I watched the entire cartoon and half of Rebels because I was so amped about the podcast even after listening to those first two movie episodes. Since then I have been waiting two years for your reactions to two arcs in particular; The first was the arc ending in Palpatine's 2v1 vs Maul and Savage, the second is the mentioned Jar-Jar Fucks arc. Unbeliveably excited for the next episode.

logan

Listening to this as someone who hated this fucking show and has seen Rebels is golden. There are no stakes. Everything that happens here is answered in Rebels. Why did this happen? Because that character is in Rebels. Basically every question the crew has is answered in Rebels lol. Also the best moment in Obi Wan isn't even original to Obi Wan. They fuckin did it better in Rebels! Just a miserable show that had so much potential if they had anyone competent working on it but they didn't, other than the Meat Guy.

The Younglings Had It Coming

5 star episode about a fucking terrible show. I can't wait for the Rebels coverage after some of the comments here.

Dusty Regalia

Small point, extracting information through the Force has been around since ROTJ. “Sister… you have a twin sister.”

Alexander Kuhn

Austin makes this same observation around hour 4

RetroMG

Thank you! I was coming to say the same thing.

Stacy

Yep, it was 3 days after the shootings. And I don't think they had any warnings at first and only added it after they got criticism for it. I watched it opening day and I'm pretty sure there was nothing.

Saavaal

The jar jar arc would have been hilarious to drop on Valentine’s Day

Thomas Whitney

I just got to 2:15ish and only now just realized that first image in the show notes *isn't* a KOTOR screenshot. My brain had fully parsed it that way.

Ron Jones

Just signed up for the Patreon in time to get a "treaty treat" as Natalie might call it.

Adam Brehmer

So, force ghosts. Modern star wars has made a big deal of this being something that doesn't just HAPPEN but must be learned and trained. Qui gon does it off screen, but then guides Yoda to unlocking it in an upcoming S6 episode of Clone Wars. Then, at the end of RotS Yoda basically tells Obi Wan that Qui Gon can do this and that he will be able to teach Obi Wan to do it as well, which presumably happens immediately following the Obi Wan Kenobi show discussed in this episode. This is all fine and good, I have no problem with it (execution here aside where Qui Gon shows up right before the credits roll). BUT, Anakin is a force ghost at the end of RoJ!?!?!?! Who taught him? Why make a big deal about this force power if Anakin will get to do it without all the training the other 3 did? Is it because he's the chosen one? I kind of hate myself for falling into this nitpicking mode of criticism because I generally think these kinds of complaints are in bad faith. But modern star wars just seems to be putting SOOOOO much focus on that force power specifically that it makes it hard for me to not notice the inconsistency with Anakin

Sunny Muffins

I started burning through fates in ff14 while listening to this. Stopped at nearly 2hrs. I think I did somewhere around 20? Mostly solo.

the dread pirate Hera

I also liked it, but I am fully aware that my bar for "is this a good Star Wars thing" is BARELY anything more than "is this a Star Wars thing" lmao

Tim L.

the thing with basketball is that sometimes what you really want is a great seven game series with really tough, even play that comes down to the last seconds. but sometimes it is a lot of fun to watch the harlem globetrotters dunk the washington generals into the dirt. this podcast is like watching the harlem globetrotters play my high schools jv squad, and i'm loving every second

Nicholas Houlson

I was just thinking the Leia stuff was tonally on par with Ewoks Adventure. Wouldn't have minded it so much if a Leia-specific show worked at that level.

Ben

Loved the discussion but all I can think about is that Disney put out that clone wars episodes to watch before Obi-Wan list when really what they should have recommend was rebels. All of Obi-Wan is playing around with characters and some concepts that get introduced in rebels. Can't wait for yall to get to it and recognize some of this stuff

Charles DiPierro

When they make the Vader show about him finding the secret Sith tomes of Force Ghosting, and it's 4 hours of deep fake James Earl Jones voice, I'm holding you directly responsible.

John Wm. Thompson

It feels almost voyeuristic to hear you all suffer so for hours on end

Rad Rodge

I honestly think only George, and perhaps by extension Filoni, truly cares about the notion of Force ghosts requiring training or even being scarce—modern Star Wars in the sense of post-Disney-sale Star Wars hasn't tried to get into the training thing and I don't particularly think they will. George alone seems like the one who made it contradictory by insisting it requires detailed training but not addressing how Anakin gets that knowledge haha

Dennis Groome

Sorry you had to watch this, but I'm loving the takedown episode. Are you aware of the Patterson Cut fan edit? It cuts it down to like half the run time and makes it much better. Better, not necessarily good, but better.

Matt Liparota

I gotta say, when I watched the first episode of Obi-Wan and it's full of Ewan McGregor serving broken and traumatized and we're getting hooks for a former padawan who was left out in the cold thanks to Order 66 and landed with the Inquisitors...I was living. This was my shit, for the first time in a long time I was fucking *hyped* for Star Wars. It wasn't perfect, but it was my shit. For the first time in a decade I picked up a Star Wars novel. I booted up KOTOR. Star Wars is back, baby! The rest of the series didn't quite live up to that. Like so many other Disney+ shows it either needed to lose two episodes or add two. There's stuff to chew on there, but it's doing so much that it's kind of a mess. I'll always appreciate Obi-Wan for how it made me feel after that first episode, even if in retrospect I know if it didn't exist Andor would have come along and made me feel the same way for 10 damn weeks in a row just a few months later.

Rad Rodge

I broadly agree, that first episode and especially the long stretch with no dialogue comes just close enough to really make me think of this great sort of Paul Schrader God’s-Lonely-Jedi story that I can envision just out of our reach haha

Patrick Kay

Just FYI, the Owen Lars = Obi-Wan's Brother bit is an original Lucas thing. It was in the original script for Return of the Jedi, got cut from the film, remained in the RotJ novelization, and was assumed to be true as such in EU material until Attack of the Clones twisted it around, per Lucas's whims once more.

Alex Ozenberger

Has Natalie listened to “The Least Wanted Song”? Because her “uh oh uh oh” at 2:53:43 sounded like it could have been a direct sample.

Divya M. Persaud

Wow listening to this made me realize how much the writers of Kenobi relied on people bringing knowledge in from Rebels wrt Inquisitors and who/what they are (???? why would they do that ???). I totally took that for granted

BruceWayneBrady

Now that I've heard this, I'm glad I watched the show for the context of this episode. I enjoyed this episode more than the entire Obi Wan show, so, thank you for this. Might have to rewatch Andor as a pallette cleanser.

Peter Odom

Can’t wait until you learn the reason they brought the grand inquisitor back!

ildon

The level of animosity they have for the Grand Inquisitor is exactly how I think anyone who never watched Clone Wars would feel about Cad Bane in Book of Boba Fett. Also, the reason Reva doesn't die is because she's a Sith and she's Real Mad and apparently in Star Wars world if you're evil and really angry you can just live through anything (Darth maul does this like 10 times).

Hand Of Cthulhu

I just want to call out Austin's breakdown of what Star Wars thinks about people in a philosophical sense as my personal "play of the game". I still can't believe they just ripped an episode off from jedi fallen order and did it much much worse.

Dozer

Rob saying "I'm sure living through the massacre at the Jedi temple is terrible, it's a nightmare, but is it that impressive a backstory" might be the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life 💀

Keeper

It’s amazing that "Leia, Princess of Alderaan" takes place after this. Leia is 100% differemt and actually make sense in that. Takes place right before Andor S2 starts IIRC and before one of the Rebels seasons that Leia later cameos in

Alec

For context, this show premiered the same week as a school shooting in the US, so i always took the content warnings to be about the order 66 scenes. IIRC those warnings are there only for episodes with those flashbacks

Grant M

For all the messiness this show has, it tells what I think is still an important piece of Obi-Wan and Vader's story. But more importantly to me, I think this show really revitalized my parent's interest in Star Wars. If they hadn't watched this show about a character they know/like/remember there's no way they would've watched Andor, a show about a character they definitely didn't remember.

Grant M

I think you're right, iirc when I watched it immediately it had no warnings, but did when I showed my parents a few days later

Greg Hodgson-Fopp

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Can't wait for the Dad-bod Boba review.

Forrest Sarles

Rob, I know you’ve talked about it but I NEED you to play Dark Forces 2 on a stream.

Genevieve Ellerbee

The wasted potential of this show is so frustrating : I felt the exact same way when they say that not only did they assemble a great cast but failed to do anything with it, but also that we won’t get a second try. This is it, and it’s mediocre to bad, and now it’s done. And I say this as a really sentimental person who would have let a lot more stuff go - I just drifted away after a few episodes because there wasn’t anything holding me.

MarkHawk

Meat VFX Man from Twitter here. Around 1:13:49, you talk about the upsetting violence warning. I don't have any "behind the scene" specific insight (basically, please don't take this as exactly 100% fact). Still, I think this was added in because another horrific school shooting occurred right before the show aired. The series opens up in a school-like environment with active shooters killing teachers and students. I believe any episode where this may have appeared in the recap or violence on kids was shown; you probably got this warning. I want to share more, but Disney has scary NDAs.

Hayley

the US needs whistleblower protection for Disney employees sharing production details

MythicalMothman

Grand Inquisitor "HE-llo" is an all-time great SW moment

Daniel (Kanonen80)

In Return of the Jedi, Vader does a little 'info pulling' on Luke. It seems a bit more like passive reading, but that's how he learns Luke has a sister. Vader then taunts him with that info to get him to fight. At least that's always how I read that scene.

Daniel (Kanonen80)

Oh hey, I should finish listening before commenting 🤣

@NotInventedHere

I forget which Legends book it was but Darth Vader tried to channel his anger and hate to use dark side powers to heal his lungs, but his happiness that it worked kept cancelling out the dark side healing.

ildon

That's so Anakin.

Meg

Speaks to how this show did the Inquisitors dirty, unfortunately

Meg

Meat guy! Great work

Katrice Howard-Brooks

As a new Star Wars fan who became a fan after the Clone Wars series,I loved the whole Obi Wanseries.

Tiganas Radu

a tale of two fandoms: RedLetterMedia after watching Picard S2: This Kenobi TV Show is alright. AMCA after watching Andor: Yo Obi-Wan Kenobi is straight up dogshit!

Froghead92

late to this episode but the phrase "palpatine usually has a bottom, who has a third" is amazing

G. Tyler Ernst

Listening to this, what I want now is a Star Wars show set in the far future, where a young force user learns the ways of the force from the ghost of Anakin trying to actually make good and repair the damage he did. Like imagine a world where we get to see Anakin struggle to articulate his philosophy on the force now that he has turned away from the dark side, but all his experiences with the Jedi as a student were shit too, so he's struggling to find a voice for his new philosophy, while also being a ghost now who cannot be physically imposing and show off his skills like he could when alive. Like a jock who gets paralyzed in a horrible accident and has to learn how to coach when he cuts just stand up and show them.

grant crawford

Relistening after finally watching this garbage fire. You guys mention Vader somehow skipping ahead of Obi-Wan, but Reva also skips ahead of Leia in the tunnel that one time, and then offscreen kills the Path member waiting there, only to... try to interrogate Leia about the Path, who she literally just met that day. Why not capture that guy who actually works for them???

Marandahir

I really enjoyed this show, but I also really appreciate listening to your takes. I didn’t listen to this episode before now these last 3 years, because I didn’t want to hear the take downs on it. I think I’m more okay now with hearing the criticisms even without losing my joy from the shows. And I think part of it is that you love and hate TCW show and take in all of it. I’m mid-listen to 4K77 main podcast episodes, and I couldn’t in good faith go onto part 2 without listening to this. Thank you for giving this show 4 hours despite your negative feelings here. Cheers.
