Dear Journal:
We spent most of the next day lounging by the pool while sissy worked on her tan and I tried, futilely, to keep from burning. It was incredibly uncomfortable, and not just because it was, like, 1,000 degrees. Everywhere I looked were French bikinis and bronzed bodies, and there I was, a tubby teen sweating beneath a sunhat, slathered in sunscreen. Even sissy seemed self-conscious, sucking in her stomach and sitting strategically to obscure her surplus pounds. Much like her bathing suit, she didn’t seem to fit quite as well as she used to.
I half expected an attendant to come over and direct us back to the kiddie pool, but they didn’t. If anything, they doted on us even more. Especially the older bartender, Temu Richard Gere. (I found out later his real name is Charles.) It was a little creepy. Sissy is naturally flirty, especially after a few drinks, and this guy was at least twice her age. Of course, he didn’t know that. According to her fake ID, she was 25.
After Michelle’s third Banana Monkey, this frothy monstrosity that looks more like a sundae than a cocktail, I asked how she planned to pay for everything. She responded, “It’s all-inclusive, dummy.”
That’s what mom and dad said, but I doubted it applied to alcohol for their underage daughter. Every time they brought sissy a drink, she signed a receipt. That paper trail was leading somewhere.
Far be it from me to correct her, though. So, I just sipped my Diet Coke and shrugged.
Eventually, I got tired of suffocating in the sweltering sun and left sissy to bake alone. I couldn't join Mom and Dad; they were gambling in the casino, and the other onboard activities seemed tailor-made for the senior set: bingo, classic rock trivia, and a meet-and-greet for something called Mahjong.
So, I worked out. After an hour on the elliptical, I returned to the pool to find Michelle passed out on her deckchair, a half-eaten plate of nachos on the table beside her. Beneath it was pinned at least a half-dozen receipts.
It was almost time to meet our parents for dinner, so, after snapping a quick photo, I roused her and, after half-carrying her back to our cabin (let’s just say it’s a good thing I’ve been working out), stuffed her in the shower to sober up.
Dinner was interesting, as was the Shanna Stevens show, but I’ll have to go into that later. Right now, I need to get ready for work. They’ve been working me like a slave driver ever since I got back!
