My favorite albums of the year have been: Model/Actriz - Pirouette Swans - Birthing Recently I also dived into the Panic! At The Disco discography, and really enjoyed Death of a Bachelor and Vices and Virtues I listened to The Black Parade for the first time and thought it was great. Favorite games this year have been R.E.P.O., Deltarune (Ch1 & 2, still haven’t bought the full game. Would definitely recommend getting Deltarune if you like Story-Based RPGS, and the music is awesome! It’s on the Switch 2 I believe.) It’s very hard for me to get into music when it comes to listening to full albums, but the first album you mentioned by Great Grandpa. Should I listen to anything else by them first, or is going straight into their most recent release fine?

Love the albums you picked here! The variety of your taste is so refreshing to see! As someone who really only listens to pop and more mainstream genres, getting recommended some more niche and interesting stuff you pointed out definitely piqued interest! Definitely gotta check out the Oklou and Gaga albums soon! Personally, I’ve loved Fancy That as well. There’s kinda no contest for it currently as my AOTY, it’s just too good lol. Been also loving: - Amine - 13 Months of Sunshine - Kevin Abstract - Blush - Jon Bellion - Father Figure -The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow - Lil Tecca - Dopamine - Addison Rae - Addison. Also been loving the Leon Thomas album “MUTT”. It came out last year, but the title track is killing it right now and a deluxe version released this year with some great tracks. Amazing modern R&B vibes from Tyrone from the Backyardigans (that’s not a joke he voiced him). THANK YOU for highlighting Born Again by Lisa. Easily one of my favorite songs of the year, seeing recognition for it makes me very very happy! RAYE is amazing, love seeing her get her flowers! Some other solo songs I’ve enjoyed are: Free by Rose Gray, End Of The World by Miley Cyrus, Dark Thoughts by Lil Tecca, & Arc De Triomphe by Amine. And the singles from the upcoming Quadeca release have all been amazing. Easily shaping up to be an AOTY contender whenever it drops. I definitely think that 2025 is shaping up to be a pretty mediocre year, but the standout songs and album are REALLY shining! Love always hearing your thoughts on the music nowadays! Keep up the great work as always Mic!

This was such a fun time, thank you for sharing! Your comps for Great Grandpa immediately had me intrigued, definitely putting that on for my drive home later. And despite only being gamer adjacent, your game recs are fascinating since they remind me so much of what I grew up watching my brother play 😅 so glad to hear this new schedule is working well for you too! You seem so much happier and more chill and I love that for you 😊 As for what I've been enjoying this year? Well, I found a website that generates a different album to listen to every day so that's been an interesting time! Yesterday was Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and today was Lou Reed's Transformer so it's been a good week so far! Otherwise, I've been on a Wilco kick since they're my mom's favorite band and I'm seeing them with her next month so that should be fun! Oh and rediscovering The Beach Boys after Brian Wilson's passing since they were my grandma's favorite band and as emotional as that's been, it's also been really lovely! So not much new stuff but great things nonetheless! ☺️

So happy you shouted out the new Caroline Polachek! I’ve been loving Death Stranding 2 so far and the scene where the song plays in game is a damn wrecking ball of misery. But I’m happy to hear that the song from an unbiased ear that the song works outside the context of the game!

Recommending just the new albums this year I've really dug: One of my absolute favorite bands at the moment, Cheekface, have another great one with Middle Spoon. Check out "Living Lo-Fi" and "Art House" Really loved corook's (another TikTok singer who got unfairly dropped from the limelight a while back) debut album committed to a bit. Would recommend "blankets" and "death". Also loved MAYHEM though I'm a big "Disease" person. clipping.'s new album Dead Channel Sky is a really great followup to their horror albums a few years back, definitely check out "Run It" or "Mirrorshades pt. 2" Shocked no one is really talking about Brian D'Addario's, one half of The Lemon Twigs, solo album Till the Morning. The title song keeps getting stuck in my head. Randomly stumbled on a great new gospel/soul release in Annie and the Caldwells's Can't Lose My (Soul) with a great titular 10-minute track. I thought Djo's The Crux was fun, especially tracks like "Charlie's Garden" or the single "Basic Being Basic". Another great album from Viagra Boys with their (sorta) self-titled viagr aboys. Listen to "Store Policy" and "The Bog Body". A different sorta-random listen from me was the Panchiko album Ginkgo which is top to bottom great, though I remember being especially taken with "Honeycomb" and "Chapel of Salt". The new HAIM album, I quit, also was another great entry from them and that lead single "Relationships" won't leave my head We've got some good stuff coming up too with new albums from The Beths, underscores, Wet Leg, Ethel Cain, Sabrina Carpenter, David Byrne, Shame, Motion City Soundtrack, and Wednesday. I've actually had that first Great Grandpa album on my Next to Listen list for a bit now after you recommended them so I'm gonna throw them on tonight or tomorrow. Love hearing your picks as always!

You mentioned Jennie and Lisa, and I have to say, if you haven't checked out Jisoo's EP, you definitely should! Your Love is my favorite song of the year so far! I'm pretty sure that Haku want you to make a DDD for King Dedede. That's the only logical explanation. So glad to hear you like Gnarly! If you haven't checked out Gabriela yet, it's a very different vibe but it's also a great time. OMG Fire Emblem Three Houses is my favorite game of all time!! I'm so glad you are playing it! The Blue Lions route post-timeskip is a lot. My first playthrough was Black Eagles. Some of my favorite albums this year so far: Kandis - Playground (Fav song: What Am I) Gyubin - Flowering (Fav song: Evergreen) Jisoo - Amortage (Fav song: Your Love) i-dle - We are (Fav song: Unstoppable) Fromis_9 - From Our 20's (Fav song: LIKE YOU BETTER) Some of my favorite songs that aren't on any of the aforementioned albums: LOVEONE - Drama Queen Minnie - Obsession I:MOND - Unusal (That's not a typo, it is not Unusual, it's Unusal) KIIRAS - KILL MA BO$$ Kim HyeRim - F5 Chuu - Only cry in the rain KiiiKiii - I DO ME Katseye - Gnarly & Gabriela

So excited for the Mario Kart soundtrack video! I haven’t had the chance to play the game yet, but I’ve been listening to the music non-stop!

Honestly for me the best album so far this year has been Who Believes In Angels by Elton John and Brandi Carlile. It's a fantastic album and the best thing Elton has done since the 70s. Aside from that, I really enjoyed the new Black Country, New Road album, especially the singles. It's very different to the Isaac Wood era, but it's still showing promise. The Steven Wilson album The Overview has a phenomenal first track in Objects Outlive us, but the other song still hasn't clicked yet for me. The Elbow EP is great, 4 excellent songs, especially Adrianna Again and Sober. I've been enjoying the music Seb Lowe has been putting out so far, especially We Must Defend Ourselves. Also the new Wunderhorse song The Rope is a banger.

Great list, lots here that I haven't heard of. I love the list video format (especially with the song previews), I find it's much more engaging than just a playlist. For me I think Revengeseekerz by Jane Remover is a clear favourite. I haven't listened to much of her work outside of her Dariacore albums, but in particular I loved her mashup project Grave Robbing under the name leroy. Revengeseekerz feels like the sample-cleared spiritual successor to that. It has the same intense, high energy, overwhelming maximalist production, but the collage of sound just comes together into something really amazing. Highly recommend it if you haven't heard it – Psychoboost with Danny Brown is the big song, but Dreamflasher is my favourite!

a couple albums i think that should be mentioned in terms of just being pretty nice albums that came out this year include Mckinley Dixon - Magic, Alive billy woods - GOLLIWOG (fantastic rapping under horror influenced production that really interested me), Nick Leon - A Tropical Entropy (killer dance record, I think the wonky angle would love it), Lorde - Virgin (even though a ton of people found it mid) Gelli Haha - Switcheroo (a fun little dance pop album) Your Grandparents - The Dial (do you like the roots or Anderson .paak or other soulful rap groups.. check this out)

one of my favorite albums of this year has been lucy dacus’s forever is a feeling. classic lucy lyricism channeled into some wonderful love songs! as for songs, indigo de souza and quinnie are both great indie artists who’ve released some nice singles recently, both have albums coming out this month too! “heartthrob” by indigo de souza is a fave. also have been getting into magdalena bay again, saw them live in may and it re-ignited my love of imaginal disk! looking forward to listening to great grandpa, they’re playing at the bumbershoot music festival this year so i’ll be able to catch them live too. great video!!! love hearing your thoughts on the pop stuff while still getting some great recs for lesser known artists

even though gnarly wasn't received well initially, i think it gave katseye the mainstream boost they needed. the follow ups "gabriela" and "gameboy" are honestly fun tracks. katseye is the first kpop (adjacent?) group in years that i'm incredibly excited to follow and watch grow as artists, and i'm especially excited to see how katseye's vocalists, lara and sophia, fare as they inevitably get to do solo projects. in my endeavors to listen to avant-garde music genres, i finally got around to listening to diamanda galás's music. she's an interesting artist for sure! currently loving schrei x, saint of the pit, and you must be of a certain devil. also i'm actually a fire emblem GBA connoisseur! i assume when you said you played the first game, you're referring to the game with eliwood, hector, and lyn as the protagonists? it's technically the 7th entry in the series in japan, but it's the first official entry in the english version of FE. would love to know what your favorite units to use are and if you plan on playing FE sacred stones or older japanese exclusive FE games.

jenny

I saw underscores music in the playlist that song is amazing holy shit

Bob Nick

I would add on some of the albums you mentioned like PinkPantheress and Lady GaGa but some albums ive really enjoyed this year would be Sparks - MAD! James Marriott - Don't Tell The Dog Sports Team - Boys These Days Changeline - THE.DRAW.OF.A.NEW.SHAPE Joost - Unity Matt Berry - Heard Noises The Braes - missy and the black dog Nympho - Honk If Your Horny Super Market - Shopping List This has kinda inspired me to make my own playlist

Aidan

considering you mentioned hella good and underscores in the same video, i hope you’re familiar with her cover of hella good - its, uh, *hella* good

It would be very interesting to have insight and give an overview of video game soundtracks are! I think it would be very similar to your rhythm game video but not very dense of the history of the genre itself but rather more on focusing on the music side of video games which most of what I listened to is pretty good! the most I could say that I listened not in full but have tracks in my playlists are: Persona 5 soundtrack (I mean most of the three mainline persona series' soundtracks are pretty good to amazing) VA-11 Hall-a The original Minecraft soundtrack that c418 produced Cuphead Undertale and Deltaruin Celeste I don't know if this topic will be interesting for a video for youtube (or maybe for Pareon and Nebula) but it's a interesting deep dive that hopefully you are interested in covering!

I discovered Cameron Winter's Heavy Metal album a couple months back and instantly became a geese head this whole summer and I'm seeing him live with friends in November. I've been consumed profusely.

thanks for the update and all the great recommendations. i'm a big fan of Haku now. Also as someone who's favorite game series is fire emblem i'm always glad to hear someone enjoying playing one of the games for the first time.
