First glance at the sketches for the new chapter "System Update"! I'm really excited to be finally back in the sketching stage and to show these pages to you. I feel weirdly vulnerable about showing unfinished work even though that is what interests me the most in other people's process. 🙈I loooove coming up with ways to draw the in game scenes. Designing Flix and Zockl in different game aesthetics is one of my favorite things! But oh boy... as much as I love Minecraft, drawing in cubes is no fun at all! I already gave myself some leeway by not strictly sticking to geometry, but still. I hope I can make this somehow look good while not torturing myself too much. I can't waitttt for the Stardew Valley scenes! For this chapter I'm changing my process a bit. While working on Misskilled, I started working on new pages every week. Every time I would go through the whole process - setting up the page, laying out the speechbubbles, sketching, inking, cleaning, lettering, screentoning, finish - week for week. I hoped I would create a steady flow of new pages this way and help myself not get bored by being stuck with just one task for weeks. What actually happened was that I overwhelmed myself and slowed down my progress in the process. Switching between tasks is super hard for me and so every step felt like I was starting from zero, never being able to gain momentum.

It was also hard to build a backlog of pages in case I got sick, had to prioritize other work that week or needed a break. What worked best for me was having some time to focus on one task for an extended period of time. And last week confirmed this observation: Getting into sketching on the first day was hard. But putting in the same hours the next day was already much easier and by the third and fourth day of sketching I was quick to get into "the zone" and liked my results better. Even though I could start inking and producing finished pages by now I want to take some more time to sketch (preferably the whole chapter at once, if that doesn't take too long). ✨

Unfortunately I also get bored and therefore distracted super easily (sounds contradicting? It is to me, too!). Not to mention post-Covid-sleepiness and general mental illness exhaustion. I think I tried every ADHD trick I could ever find on the internet and my current ADHD meds dosis helps a lot. But if you happen to have ADHD as well and have some tricks to share on how to be productive when you have to be without selling your soul and paying with with every last drop of energy, I'd love to hear about it! 💕

I'm looking forward to a week of sketching and can't wait to show you storyboard, sketches, lines and finished pages next to each other!

Oooh I struggle with transitions soooo much also. I loved the sketches you made to show it. I feel like that illustrates what I've been struggling to explain very well. I'm not sure if it's actually advice as much as validation and support but the best I have found to help with what you are describing is to take like a 60/30/10 approach and "plan" flexible breaks into the week. Keep my brain mostly focused on a continuous up curve for the main task, but I plan to think about one other creative outlet thing in the middle and a few mundain things that don't take my mind away from the main task but gives me some breathing room to keep going with motivation but let things sink in and stew. I find that forcing myself to walk away doesn't mean I don't think about it, I'm just not trying to force it in those breaks either and that helps come up with more creative ideas and feels less pressure to "do better right now". My job is more interrupting than working, so I block off a day in the middle of the grind week to either heads down and get into that grove or it also works to reset if it been grinding too much. Its a nice buffer so I can allow myself to go off and try that thing that is much more interesting right now but a cut off for me to come back to the main task after I had my day of fun distraction.

Omg yes I definitely need some ADHD tips ;-; I have so much difficulty with these things too and it is super hard for me to get past the wall that it creates. I love your art and story so much!!!
