Skyverns of The World (Patreon)

Skyvern trivia!
Wild dragons don't breathe fire! Only Skyverns that have life-bonded a rider and elder dragons seem to be able to.
All Skyverns are dragons. But not all dragons are Skyverns.
Most Skyverns dislike water because they can't swim well and have a harder time flying with soaked wings. The Ethereal and Fathomless are an exception, but even they don't like deep water.
How Skyverns fly is a mystery. Because they're quite heavy and don't have hollow bones.
RELATIONSHIP WITH HUMANS
The first dragon to ever life-bond a human was a boundless Skyvern.
You can easily tell the difference between a wild Skyvern and a Life-bonded one by looking at the eyes. Life-bonded Skyvern eyes change color to shades of either purple or blue.
The Thunderous Skyvern is the dragon that forms life-bonds with people the least.
Wild dragons generally stay away from people, or rather their vehicles and machines, They don't like the noise. So you won't find any near towns or cities.
Like with crocodiles, humans aren't usually on a Skyvern's menu. But many can and will eat people if they enter their territory and present an easy catch. Especially the greater Skyvern have no problem snatching up the occasional lost hiker. It's free calories, after all.
To mitigate this, a lot of the bigger dragons get tagged with a tracker to make sure they stay away from people.... and airplanes. They use a small army of drones (mostly decoys for distraction) to accomplish this. It is placed between the dragon's shoulder blades, since that is where it can't easily reach it.
REPRODUCTION
As you've probably already noticed, male dragons have a horn on their nose and chin. These are for display in mating rituals. The male will open its wings wide and whirl its head from side to side. Ladies love the symmetry.
Like some shark species, Skyverns are Ovoviviparous.
The lesser Skyvern Species (Ethereal, Night, Blazing) usually have one (sometimes two) whelps at one time, the greater Skyvern species (Fathomless, icy, Thunderous, Boundless) never have more than one. They put a lot of energy into raising fewer offspring to give them the best chance of survival.
Hybrids between some Skyvern species are possible, such as a Blazing Night hybrid or an Icy Thunder. These hybrids are infertile and very rare, since these species don't usually share a habitat and are hostile towards each other.
The bond between mated dragons was inspired by swans.
APPEARANCE
Most dragons never reach the size depicted in the image. Their growth may slow or accelerate depending on the available prey.
Because of the horn on their chin, male dragons often sleep on their side or will place their head on a rock or tree branch to get comfortable.
Dragons come in a variety of colors, including leucism, melanism and albinism. Generally, you can expect the following colors for each species:
Ethereal: Any color. Night: varying shades of Green, blue, purple and sometimes pure black.Blazing: varying shades of Brown, red, orange, yellow, pink (rare), and white (rare) Fathomless: usually dark monochrome colors with white stripes. But green and brown are possible (rare) Icy: varying shades of light blue and grey colors, or completely white. A rare blood-red mutation exists.Thunderous: Any color, although no orange or yellow has ever been seen. Boundless: Varying shades of red, orange, brown, grey, black, green and even white (rare)

That's all folks! I hope this was a little bit interesting. Not giving away too much about life-bonded dragons yet since I'm leaving that to the comic.
It would be cool to make this an actual poster as soon as I have the time to look into that. Website suggestions that offer print on demand services are welcome.
Thank you for sticking around and I hope to return to you soon with new comics and concept art!
