Hi everyone,

Here is a tutorial for beginners who have a little experience. We will paint a simple tulip using a limited palette of just three colours. We'll have a look at how wet the paper is and we'll work wet on wet allowing the paint to flow over the paper. I'll also demonstrate how I layer the paint to add depth.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below my message here. I have included some progress photos of my painting. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

Happy painting,

Louise

This tutorial is going to be so much fun to paint. I really love your choice of color for the tulip, bright and vibrant. Thank you

Julie Westwood

Thank you for doing another beginner’s tutorial I’ve recently done some of the other beginner ones and have found they have really helped me develop how I think about my palette, shading etc so I’m excited for this one 😍

Yvonne Walton

Thank you Louise I did the black Lab today tomorrow this flower. I love two tone flowers.

Kate

This looks so fun! Can't wait to try!

Vee

Ooo, I LOVE tulips! Thank you for this beautiful vibrant one. Am doing all your tulips and I think it will make a lovely little collection - Thank you so much Louise, you have no idea what you mean to me - and I know to many, many others as well💟💟💟

Eleonore

Thank you Louise for this beautiful tulp, I love it.

Kate

This was such a great tutorial and teaches you so much! I learned about water control, feathering out paint, dry on wet, lifting and mixing. Absolutely love this one - even, if not specially, as a more advanced painter. Thanks Louise!

Louise De Masi

I'm so glad to hear that Julie! It's wonderful to know the tutorials are helping. I hope you enjoy this one just as much!

Louise De Masi

That's so touching, thank you! I'm thrilled you're enjoying the tulip series. It means a lot to share this journey with you Vee. Thank you.

Louise De Masi

I'm so happy to hear you found this valuable, especially with your advanced skills! Thank you for your kind words Kate.

Jennifer Abbott

Oooo! So pretty! 🧡 I'm certainly going to enjoy this one! Hope you're doing well Louise.

Sherry Burnett

Beautiful tulip. Would love to see some more advanced compositions too. 🧡

Lynn Sloan

Looking forward to this one that shouldn't cause too much stress! 😅 Can you please comment why you use such a large bucket of water for your two brushes, one of which is a size 0?

Louise De Masi

I hope you enjoy it Lynn. The bigger the bucket the fewer times I have to clean it out when I'm painting. I also like the wide opening. Sometimes when I'm painting I have to dip into the water quickly- (I may even do that without looking at the water container) - it's much easier to dip the brush into a bucket of water than a small jar.

Yvonne Walton

I did do it it took me three goes at it and I still wasn’t happy with it. I was using different paper but I don’t like to be a bad person and blame it on my tools. Ha ha. Just not one I’m going to try again. But thank you a great tutorial.

Aurora Culkin

Thanks for this beginner beautiful tutorial. Excited to try it.

Pam

Thank you, Louise. Your beginners tutorials have been very helpful in getting me started. I feel like I’m learning a lot of the basics I was missing and I can see progress already. I’m very intrigued by your palette. is it glass? I’m looking for a palette that doesn’t get stained by the paint if you could recommend one. Thank you.

Pam

Great point, Lynn. I love that about these simpler tutorials. You don’t need stress when you begin something new. Life is stressful enough as it is! 😆

Lynn Sloan

I can answer. It’s simply a white ceramic dinner plate. I use them too. So inexpensive (you probably have one in your cabinet!) easy to see your colors, and washes up without staining.

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful Pam! I'm so pleased. Lynn is correct, the palette is an inexpensive ceramic platter bought at Kmart from the kitchen department for about $5. I have a few of them.

Pam

Clever. Thanks, Louise.

Pam

Thanks, Lynn. That’s what it looked like to me but I wanted to make sure.

Sonja Mills

I’ve been sketching all of my tutorial attempts very small . I did this one much larger and tries super hard. It’s still not great, but was much less of a mess. I’m going to redo them all larger. Idk what I was thinking. I’m just very inexperienced. Thanks for your wonderful tutorials.

Andrea Senn

Hi Louise, I‘m a beginner and joined your Site about a month ago. So far i‘ve learned very much, including Stretching the Papier.I painted the Tulip 5 times…just Finished the Last and weirdly enough, to my Eye, the First one Turned our best. (on Not stretched Papier). Did That Happen to others as well or is it just fluke? And one other question is How do you do your sketching from the reference Photo? Is there a Post? Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Andrea, I'm so pleased you are learning a lot. It's most likely a fluke more than anything else. It's much easier and more pleasant to paint on paper that remains flat when you work on it. I have a video and blog post about sketching a line drawing. It gives you a few ideas about what to include on the line drawing without adding too much information to the sketch. The blog post is here and the video is at the bottom of the post https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2023/9/25/how-to-simplify-a-reference-photo. Thanks!

Andrea Senn

Hi Louise thanks for answering. I think i worded my question wrong.( im Not a native english speaker) what i meant was, is it fluke That the First attemt at following the Tutorial turned out the best painting.with the following 4 tulip paintings I’m less happy about. I thought I would Improve with every repetition… Patience is something i have to learn yet. Have a nice sunday.

Louise De Masi

Oh sorry Andrea. That sometimes happens to me too - though not often. My first study will look better than my second painting. Maybe it's because I painted more freely with the study. Thank you! I hope you had a good weekend.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sonja! It will probably be easier for you to work at the same size that I do.

Fadila Sides

Magnifique j'adore vraiment car peindre les tulipes pour moi c'est délicat merci beaucoup pour cette aide précieuse et bravooooo👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤🎨

Joyce A Stevens

Louise, I printed out the line drawing to use for the tulip. The tulip printed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper. The tulip itself was 14cm (5 1/5 inches) across the tulip center. Is it supposed to be that big? Thank you.

Joyce A Stevens

Thank you. Glad to know that. I struggled with how big the areas were when adding water, tilting the paper to see if the area was covered enough, and then getting the correct amount of paint in the area for it to flow. I think I need to try the tulip again. It is pretty much a hot mess.

Tanja Garssen

Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I think my tulip is looking good. The colors are so vibrant. I am happy with it. Hop on to the next. 😊

Louise De Masi

That's wonderful! Thank you Tanja. I'm glad you had success with it.

April

Thank you so much Louise! It was so fun! I really didn’t think I could paint anything this delicate. Wonderful tutorial!

Martina

Which camera do you use to take your reference photos?

Louise De Masi

I use a Cannon 550D DSLR Martina. It's getting old but it's very good.

Cbear

I am a new Patreon member & have been enjoying your tutorials. My goal is one per week to really learn & understand. You may have already answered this question elsewhere, so I do apologize. You use something called an "eradicator" brush when the paint is dry vs using a damp, clean brush when paint is still wet from area you want to remove. Can you explain why and what is the difference? Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Cbear. You can remove paint when it's wet and also when it's dry. You have more control when it's dry and you can leave a more precise highlight. The eradicator brush is useful for this because it has short stubby bristles that don't damage the paper. You can read more about it here: https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2023/5/5/the-eradicator-brush Copy and paste the link into your browser.
