Hi everyone,

I’ve had a few people ask if I’d ever paint some monkeys, so this week I finally gave it a go and painted this baby chimpanzee.

I’d never painted a monkey before and I was a bit apprehensive before I started. I wasn’t even sure if I could do it. I started with a study, which I was reasonably happy with, then moved on to a half sheet for the main painting.

That second painting took me all day, but when I came back into the studio the next morning and looked at it with fresh eyes… I wasn’t happy. It felt overworked in places, some areas were too dark, and overall it just wasn’t pleasing to look at. I didn't finish it and I was very close to abandoning the whole idea and painting something I knew I’d have more success with.

But I’d already put two solid days into it, so I gave myself a bit of a talking to and decided to try one more time.

The third painting was very different. I toned the colour back, relaxed, and let the paint and water do their thing instead of trying to force it to look how I thought it should look. That made all the difference, and I was much happier with the result.

So… I’m going to turn this little guy into a tutorial and talk through the decisions I made and why. I think it’s a good example of how much you can learn by pushing yourself and learning from your mistakes. It was also a good reminder for me not to shy away from new subjects. It’s tempting to stick to what feels safe, but you learn so much more by having a go, even when it doesn’t work the first time.

I’ll also be making a tutorial of the kangaroo painting below. I originally painted the first one back in 2024 for my daughter when she was having her first baby, and after so many requests I’ve painted another version specifically for a tutorial.

There’s plenty more in the works too including a beginner rose tutorial coming soon. As always, thank you for all the encouragement and interest. It really does make a difference.

Love the little monkey. He is so cute. He looks like he is moving and going to swing right into my arms! I so happy you kept at it!!!💞

Charity Washko

How sweet! I love how you had a talk with yourself. Sometimes we need a good talking to from ourselves! 😆

Pam Tippen

This little one is so sweet I love the personality you captured I will enjoy the tutorial Thank you for sharing your journey

Louise Prefontaine

Your monkey is so cute. Thank you fir being so honest...not even a professional artist gets done on the first try. I had a painting that did not turn out today...wanted to give up. Now I'll just try again..don't want that monkey on my back. Thanks again

Louise De Masi

That's the spirit Louise! We have to fail in order to improve. Thank you!

Katherine Antonini

What a beautiful painting, Louise! What I love most about your paintings are your backgrounds. The subtle splashes of color that you add, just enhance the painting without ever taking anything from it. It’s never distracting, it’s never too much, and somehow, you always put these splashes in just the right place. I don’t know how you decide where it should go, how much color it should have, or what colors it should have, but if you could add that to a tutorial, it would be so greatly appreciated. I love following tutorials and painting what I’m told, but someday I would love to be able to create something on my own. I just don’t have the confidence about composition and what to use as a background and where to put it. Thank you for all you do and for sharing your wonderful talent!

Tarsha Njembelle (Donaldson)

Thank you for sharing your process. As a beginner, reworking a subject can sometimes feel like a setback, so hearing your experience is genuinely encouraging and motivates me to keep practicing. The monkey is precious 🤩

This little one looks so cute and happy! I’m glad you decided to paint a chimpanzee! I love the kangaroo as well.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Katherine. I will be honest, I struggled with backgrounds for years. They intimidated me so much that many of my early paintings have no background at all. I used to tell myself I preferred a clean, unadorned look, but the truth was that I was too scared to paint them in. What I have learnt over time is not to overthink it. Wet paper helps enormously and I try to let the paint do what it wants to do rather than forcing it. Letting go of expectations is a big part of it. Do not overwork it and accept what the paint gives you. You can always make small adjustments later, but usually it is best to leave it alone. Those soft background splashes add movement, softness and interest, and they help guide the viewer’s eye rather than distract from the subject. Like everything, it really does come down to experimenting and giving yourself permission to try, even when it feels uncomfortable. I will talk about this more in a tutorial. Confidence comes with time and practice and you are already on the right path by thinking about it and wanting to understand it better.

Louise De Masi

Thanks so much Tarsha. It's a never a setback. It's a way to learn and try things differently next time. Master painters have lots of failures- even after painting for decades. It's part of the process. ❤️

I love, love the monkey and like the kangaroo too. I cannot wait to get the tutorials.

Christiane

This is so adorable, can’t wait to paint it. I have a favour to ask you , in June we loss our Nash (Yorkie) and my husband and my self have been struggling so if you could paint one and teach it on patreon it would mean so much to us . If you need pictures I have just a few (he was only 4 1/2 years old . Thank you.

Catherine Taylor

Thank you Louise! Very much appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Looking forward to both tutorials!

Louise De Masi

I am so sorry for your loss Christiane. That is heartbreaking. I will send you a private message here on Patreon.

I think you’re a wonderful watercolor artist. I got hooked on your style through your youtubes and haven’t been disappointed following your tutorials. Your outtakes are hilarious! I get stumped sometimes, but I continue to learn. Thank you, Louise. I can’t wait to do the 2026 tutorials. I have a zoo wall in my home and the monkey will join the crew. Happy NewYear.

Vicki Pate

I LOVE this and the story of your struggle and the result came at just the moment I needed to hear it from someone so accomplished. Brava, and thank you!

Rebecca Swingle

You inspire and encourage me. Thank you!

Fran Gantner

You certainly do impressive work and you are a great instructor. Can't wait to try the chimpanzee.

Sonia

Mr.Monkey is looking so cute...I would love to paint that...waiting for the tutorial.

Ariane

What a treat to wake up to this post and discover that you’ve painted a monkey! I was one of the people that asked for a primate, so I’m very grateful that you did this for us. You must get so many requests. As I push myself to paint more independently, I’ve come to really enjoy the process involved in figuring out how to paint something. There are so many things to consider and you really discover new things about painting but also oneself every time. Looking forward to painting with you this year!

Barbara Constant

I would love the kangaroo tutorial also!!! Loved the giraffe! Thank you

Louise De Masi

Thank you very much Beverly. 🥰 I love the idea of a zoo wall - so fun! Happy New Year to you too.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Vicki. I am really glad it came at the right time for you. We all struggle more than it might appear, no matter how long we have been painting 💗.

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Ariane. You are right, you learn so much by working things out for yourself, both about painting and about yourself. I am looking forward to painting with you this year too. 🥰

Louise De Masi

Thanks Barbara! I'm working on the kangaroo tutorial today.

Yvonne Stanley

I love your encouragement Louise, I am currently trying to paint a grey horse close up, and feeling discouraged lol, your post is what I need to take stock, don’t give up just because I feel uncomfortable and not seeing the results straight away.

Louise De Masi

This is the way Yvonne! Thank you and good luck with it. 🥰

gayla

I just can't wait for the little monkey tutorial!!! I look every day to see if it's there. It's so sweet.

Angel_ninus

i love it Louise and Im very happy how u share your talented :*

Barbara Heim

hi! thankyou for being so open with the monkey process ---- it is so encouraging to know professional artist sometimes doubt and struggle --your honesty is so greatly appreciated!

I think your chimp is AMAZING! As is the kangaroo. I have a question--I think I need some basic pencil drawing skills, too. Can you recommend someone I can follow to help with that, with good tutorials?

Louise De Masi

Thank you so much Amrita, that’s very kind of you to say 😊 I don’t have a specific artist I personally know for pencil drawing tutorials, but there are some excellent resources out there. If you search on YouTube for things like ’beginner pencil drawing fundamentals’, ’learning to draw from observation’ or ’basic shading exercises’, you’ll find plenty of structured lessons to work through. Even just practising drawing simple objects from life like a mug, an apple, or your hand will build confidence quickly.

Louise De Masi

My pleasure Barbara. I doubt myself and struggle all the time! 🥰

poetry and painting

I have been drawing single objects--that's part of the problem. I need to learn to layer one thing behind another.

Tracy von Elling

This is adorable! I'm new here to your patreon. Love your work and teaching style!

Lise Bowles

I love the chimpanzee, so cute and you captured his personality!
