Hi everyone,

Here’s a beginner friendly rose tutorial using just three colours from my custom Schmincke set. We take this one step by step, focusing on soft washes, simple petal shapes, and controlling water without overcomplicating things. If you follow along, this is an achievable painting for anyone new to watercolour.

All of the files you need to complete the painting are attached below this message including 14 progress photos of my painting. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy it.

From snowy, cold NY state, this is a lovely bit of Spring! Thank you.

Louise, I am a paid member, but my videos are locked. I can’t figure out Patreon and can’t find a login. I had to sign up got membership again. Can you help me out of this dilemma?

Sammie Bryant

This gorgeous! I watched the tutorial, you make it come together so beautifully that I’d swear it looks advance. I’ve been thinking about you, I hope your hand is healing nicely and your pain has totally gone or at least vastly improved. I hope you’re getting better every day.

Beverly Amato

Oh, I love, love the pink rose! Thank you, Louise. I’ll start on it today.

Genevieve Grier

Lovely! I tried my hand at it yesterday. Feels extra nice to paint with spring colors with the polar vortex we have going on here in Ontario!

Karin L Roberts

What would be a good substitution for Ruby Red?

Louise De Masi

Hi Karin, I've listed substitute colours in both Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton on the Supplies List. You can download it.

Beautiful. It will be my first as a member.

Sanne van Zwol

I will start this tomorrow. First painting as a new member. Super excited.

Hi, Louise! I'm a new member and am so happy to be part of your wonderful group. I have a question. I saw on Youtube that you have a tutorial of a Westie dog. Is the full tutorial here on your site? I would love to paint it. Thanks!!!

Dom De Masi

Hi Donna. Welcome. The Westie isn’t here on Patreon. It’s only a YouTube tutorial.

Donna Ammons

Oh, okay. Thanks for the quick answer, Louise!

Lyris

Hi Louise, this might be a very basic question but how do you decide which part of the rose to start with and the order in which you paint the petals. I notice you jump around to different petals but I was wondering if there is a reason for that. Thank you!

Louise De Masi

Hi Lyris, You can start anywhere and paint the petals in whatever order feels comfortable to you. I tend to jump around the rose because I need to let nearby petals dry before painting the ones beside them, otherwise the paint can run together. Sometimes in tutorials I’ll also begin with some of the easier petals first so we can ease into the painting and get a bit of practice before tackling the more difficult areas. Thanks!

Lyris

Thank you!

Hi Louise, I absolutely loved painting the sweet pea and while I only used half a sheet of paper thought I would have a go at the rose. As a beginner I would like to say that I found this very difficult, mainly because I tried to draw the rose sketch freehand, like I did with the sweet pea. Consequently I couldn’t really follow along. Just saying, I think this is a little advanced for a total beginner.

Louise De Masi

Thanks for giving it a go Helen, and I'm so pleased you enjoyed the sweet pea tutorial. Roses can be a challenge! One of the things I've discovered over the years is that it's quite difficult to label tutorials as beginner, intermediate or advanced. We all come to painting with different strengths and experience. Someone who is new to watercolour may find one subject quite straightforward, while another person with more experience might find that same subject challenging for different reasons. I appreciate you sharing your experience, though. Feedback like this is always helpful, you'll probably be surprised how much easier this rose feels if you come back to it in a few months.

I just joined up at the weekend as I needed inspiration to get my painting mojo back again. Very pleased with my first attempt
