Hi everyone,

This is the full kangaroo tutorial, inspired by the little painting I originally created for my daughter’s nursery when she was expecting her first baby. It hung beside a koala and a kookaburra, and many of you asked if I would turn it into a class so I’ve painted this new version especially for you.

In this structured step by step lesson, you’ll learn how to create soft, believable fur using just two colours and controlled wet on wet layers. We’ll focus on building simple value shifts to shape the form, keeping the painting fresh while still achieving depth. At the end, we’ll refine the eyes and subtle details to bring the kangaroo gently to life.

This class is ideal if you’d like to feel more confident working with a limited palette and want to simplify fur without losing realism.

All resources are attached below, including 11 progress photos to guide you through each stage. You can download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy painting this little one with me.

I thought it looked familiar! Beautiful! I cant wait to paint this one!

So sweet! I’ve been looking at buying one of those Chinese brushes. I’m especially interested in one like yours that, in addition to coming to a fine point, can also be used almost like a flat brush. Most of the ones I see don’t seem to do that. I don’t think I can find the Ruhong one in Europe. Could you share a bit more details about what hair type this is and perhaps how wide it is?

Louise De Masi

Thank you Ariane. I bought them from Lisa Wang and Australian artist: https://www.instagram.com/p/DRqaRq8kxPh/ They come in a set of three. I'm not sure what the hair type is but if you send Lisa a DM I'm sure she'll be able to tell you all about them.

Thank you!

Linda

I love seeing the eyes come to life👍🏻🥰.

Thank you Louise! Looking forward to painting it! xx

Thanks so much Vee! I'm squeezing my hand putty to strengthen it as I type this! 😄🥰

Sarah.

Hi Louise, absolutely beautiful, I'm currently up to the eyes, but I don't own a eradicator brush, may I ask were did u buy yours, I asked my local stores but they don't stock them. Thank you

Louise De Masi

Hi Sarah, thank you! I buy them from Rosemary and Co in the UK. I buy a few of them at once so that it makes the shipping price worthwhile. You can read about them here and there is a link to them on their site: https://www.louisedemasi.com/tips/2023/5/5/the-eradicator-brush Copy and paste that link into your browser. You could also use a small flat bristle brush (used for oil painting) if you have one - in the mean time. The bristle brushes get scruffy after time though which is why I use the eradicator.

I did finish this one, but can’t figure out to upload it…

Hi Constance, Dom here. There is a chat section on the left here on Patreon. You can post it there.

I just finished mine today! It was fun and challenging using only two colors. The flicks and tiny hairs are difficult for me, need more practice and patience. Thanks, Louise!

Hi Raquel, I saw you found where to post it. I love your kangaroo painting- it's beautiful!

After a long long break, I finally picked up the brushes and started to watch your tutorials - so many beautify subjects to choose from. I over worked on the body and now the Kangaroo looks like it's wearing a sweater/jumper, :). Somehow my colors look like they are well blended, not having the color separations like yours. The eyes really bring the kangaroo alive so I can look beyond the overworked area. This will be a gift to my friend's second grandson. I already gave them a Koala painting by following one of your tutorials. They make the best gifts. Thank you Louise!

Louise De Masi

I'm sure your friend will love it and I'm so glad you're back painting.

Colleen

Love it. Hope I can make it look this good!
