Featuring Elizabeth

Hi everyone,

I’d like to introduce a new monthly feature here on Patreon called Artist Spotlight.

Each month I’ll feature one painting shared by a member from one of our monthly challenges.

This isn’t a competition, and it’s not about choosing the ‘best’ painting. I love looking through all of your work, and every painting has something to admire.

My hope is simply to celebrate the wonderful paintings being shared by our community. Each month, I’ll highlight one painting that has particularly caught my eye, while also showing the many different ways we can interpret the same subject. I hope that by sharing what I enjoy about each painting, we can all learn something together.

For this month’s Artist Spotlight, I’d like to share this beautiful rose painted by Elizabeth.

What immediately caught my eye was the good range of values throughout the painting. The gentle transitions give the petals a beautiful sense of form.

I also love Elizabeth’s decision to allow a few soft blooms to develop in the lower right corner. Rather than distracting from the painting, they add another layer of interest and suit the softness of the rose perfectly.

The highlights have been preserved well, allowing each petal to stand apart while still feeling delicate and luminous. The darker values in the centre create a strong focal point that naturally draws your eye into the heart of the flower.

Overall, this painting has a lovely sense of calm. It’s beautifully observed, confidently painted, and a wonderful interpretation of the challenge.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for allowing me to share your painting with everyone.

I believe this is a great idea Louise. While showcasing some’s art you are also helping us see the art in a more critic way and that is very appreciated. Elizabeth, congratulations and thank you for sharing with us

Beautiful painting Elizabeth, great job! Louise, I really appreciate you breaking down the painting. For me it was definitely a teaching moment and a reminder to stop and look at what components make the painting work. You helped me see features or details that I would have otherwise missed. I look forward to seeing nexts months painting.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Sammie. That was exactly my hope. I thought it would be nice to not only celebrate a member’s painting, but also talk about the little things that make it successful. I’m really glad you found it helpful.

Louise De Masi

Thank you Chantal. That was my thinking too. It’s a chance to celebrate a member’s painting while also helping us all notice the little things that make it successful.
