Hi everyone,

Here is a little tufted titmouse I painted using a limited palette and a combination of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to suggest soft feathers by allowing the paint to flow across the paper rather than painting every feather individually. We’ll mix greys and rich darks from just French Ultramarine and Transparent Sienna, add subtle warm touches with Ruby Red and Transparent Yellow, and use careful edge control to create depth and form.

We’ll also paint a simple branch that supports the bird without competing for attention, and I’ll explain the decisions I make along the way, showing you how I use soft and hard edges, subtle colour shifts, and carefully placed darks to create form and keep the bird looking soft and fresh.

This tutorial is suitable for advanced beginners and intermediate watercolour painters who are looking to become more confident working with wet-on-wet techniques and creating soft and natural feather textures.

All of the files needed to complete the project, including 9 progress photos of my painting, are attached below. Download them individually or all at once by clicking on the "Download all" button.

I hope you enjoy painting this little bird, and I can’t wait to see your finished paintings in the community!

Hello, I am very new to Patreon and to online lessons here! I fell in love with this little tufted, tit mouse, as I have manyof them in my yard and gardens. Very much looking forward to working on this painting. I have twiddled with watercolor for years, but have never really seriously focused on it until recent retirement. Having found this lesson I’m excited to get started, but how doI find the supply list for this one? I quit the arrow to go back a page thinking I would find a fair but did not Please help?

Louise De Masi

Hi Marie, Welcome! 😊 I’m so pleased you’ve joined us, and I hope you enjoy painting the Tufted Titmouse. It sounds like the perfect tutorial for you if you have them visiting your garden! The supply list is already attached to the post along with the other files. If you can’t see it straight away, try scrolling further down the page or clicking “Show More” if Patreon is hiding some of the attachments.

Louise, thank you so much for that swift reply. And yes, I did find the supplies list as you said by scrolling farther down. I will spend more time today getting familiar with the site and how things work. As I speak to you this morning I’m sitting at my art desk with a window 4 feet ahead of me and the birdfeeder 1 foot on the other side of that window. I feed saffflower seed in hopes of deterring some of the over aggressive sparrows. I’m currently watching a little Tufted Titmouse going back-and-forth for breakfast! I’m looking forward to capturing one of these lovely little critters in watercolor and so plan to spend a great deal of time focused on your tutorial for the process and then focusing on my interpretation through careful application of the colors. Thank you again.

Louise De Masi

You’re very welcome Marie. I’m glad you found the supplies list. How lovely to have the tufted titmice visiting your feeder while you paint. You couldn’t ask for better inspiration! I hope you enjoy the tutorial and have a wonderful time painting your little visitor.

Hi Louise, Well I’ve spent a bit of time doing several small preliminary versions of the Tufted Tidwell and soon will be jumping in to do the larger painting. I’ve found it helpful each time to have the tutorial playing on my iPad at my art desk as I paint. However, at other times I’d like to play the tutorials on my pc laptop while sitting in the living room - but each time I open my Patrion account there and navigate to your section I cannot find the “LOG-IN” link. It only offers suggestions to “sign-UP” which I’ve already done. Have I simply overlooked this access to “Log- In???”

Louise De Masi

Hi Marie, Dom here. It sounds like you are logged in with a different email on the laptop. Try logging out and make sure to log in using the email associated with this account.

Marie Jarreau

Well, finally with the help of your emailed suggestions, I've cleared up my access issues and am now able to view the tutorials on my PC when I can't get to the studio-iPad. Thank you so much. This access came at a perfect time as I am now slowing down due to a very sore tendon of my right hand finger! Not operating a paint brush for another week or to! However, I had gotten the Titmouse started a week or so ago and am very pleased and excited at the current progress thanks to your great tutorial. Vey anxious to get bak to painting but must heal up first - therefore being able to at least view the tutorial while recovering AWAY FROM the studio temptation (LOL) I should at least get to learn the process and be ready to apply paint to paper in a week or so. TY. So sorry for being so wordy! I AM an incurable WRITER!

Hi Louise, I just tried my first tutorial. I ran into some issues because I didn’t have transparent sienna. I didn’t have anything close to that color that was also transparent. I can’t find anything about the supplies you use. And I thought I read or heard you say that you offer substitutions, but I can’t find those either. Other than that, I feel pretty good about my results.

Thank you, Louise! Btw I’m so happy I joined ❤️

I loved painting this little bird! When comparing him with yours, I naturally see all the differences & 'flaws', but when I look at him as a stand-alone, separate piece I can't help but be delighted with the finished product. He'd never pass muster for a bird identification book, but I love him just the same. Thank you Louise 😊

Louise De Masi

I'm so happy to know that! Thank you Tracey. ❤️
